BAS’s media
machinery continues its mission in getting the laborious
work performed by pannists, arrangers, tuners and management
promoted globally to its world audience.
The
struggle of recognition for the instrument and all involved
with this art form has been a long and difficult journey
that still has a long way to go. Pan Podium welcomes the day
when you can visit your local HMV or Virgin outlets and
readily purchase steel pan music. How wonderful it would be
to visit a music store and acquire a steel pan instrument,
to see pans on display with guitars, pianos, keyboards, drum
kits etc. This is the vision and the dedication,
determination and commitment of all those involved with this
art form will one day see the global pan family reap the
fruits of their labour. |

JUNIOR PANORAMA 2k7
|
|
Judges
were World Soloist Champion Brent Holder, seven times Junior Panorama
winning arranger Debby Romain and Miles Pascall, Vice Chair of BAS’
Future Development Forum.
The overcast day filled with sporadic showers did not dampen the spirits
of the young pannists. The audience was treated to an explosion of sweet
steel band music played by enthusiastic pan musicians. In first place
was Croydon Steel Orchestra led by Musical Director Paul Dowie. Their
rendition of Destra Garcia’s, ‘I Dare You’ saw them capture the title by
the narrowest of margins. |

The anatomy of
"appearance" picking...
|
|
|
New York -
As most steelband music panorama veterans know, where you play
is almost as important, as what you play on panorama
night. Indeed, appearance/play position can have a
profound effect on one's fortune that night, and ultimately,
what your entire season had been geared toward, the reason of
'being.'

Max
Roach Remembered
|
|
"Pan belongs on a world stage"
- Max Roach |
New York - Master drummer
extraordinaire, Max Roach, passed away on the
morning of August 16, 2007. He was a personal
friend of When Steel Talks (WST), and an ardent
supporter of the steelpan instrument, the steel
orchestra and the steelpan movement and
community. Max Roach was a giant whose genius
will be missed. He leaves behind a body of work
that more than validates the belief that he was
the greatest drummer ever - "Before he was 30,
he had been voted the greatest jazz drummer of
all time by a panel of 100 peers," and was
inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1995.
Max. He constantly championed the position that
the "steelpan belonged on the world stage,"
in words and deeds. (See Vol 24 No. 181 Daily
Challenge newspaper - Monday November 27, 1995 -
pg 13 "Max Roach on the
Power of Pan")

Panorama steel band competition
|
|
|
United
Kingdom
- The hotly contested Panorama steel band competition
has been a precursor to the carnival for 27 years, with
the cream of UK talent battling it out. But now these
talented musicians are struggling to stay in Notting
Hill. Time Out meets the performers
Despite what experience and our
pullout guide may have told you, Carnival starts on
Saturday. For a lot of people, it ends on Saturday too.
Because on Saturday, when you’re probably washing the
car or tottling round Tesco or swearing that you’ll
never drink again, an enthusiastic crowd converge on
Horniman’s Pleasance Park, Kensal Road, to watch the
Carnival’s best-kept secret – Panorama. Not to be
confused with the long-running current affairs show of
the same name, Panorama is the UK’s national steel band
competition, and whether you know it or not, it’s the
beating heart of the whole Carnival shooting match.

Champions of Steel
Hosted
in Hyde Park |
United Kingdom
-
2007 sees the celebration of the 29th
Anniversary of the Notting Hill Panorama,
‘Champions of Steel’ competition on the 25th
August 2007 to be held in Hyde Park. For many
years, Honiman’s Pleasant on Kensal Road has
been the venue for this iconic Carnival event.
Since the Russell Henderson steelband played at
the inaugural Notting Hill Children’s
Neighbourhood Festival in 1964, organised by
Rhaune Laslett, steelband music is noted as the
first recognised form of music to appear at the
Carnival and continues to play an important role
in what is now termed the largest street
festival in Europe and possibly the world with
the exception of Brazil’s Carnival.

NYPO cooking up a pot of
pan treats
|
|
|
Antigua - Taking
my time walking up Lower Nevis Street, I found my steps
involuntarily picking up pace as the sweet sounds of Michael
Row the Boat Ashore filled the lower downtown area. Bobbing
my head in time as I neared my destination – the Culture
Department – as Michael rode his boat, I temporarily forgot
I was wearing heels as the timely song accompanied a
downpour.
Managing to shelter on the stage filled
with steel pans and a group of very enthused musicians who
played without skipping a beat to the falling rain, I was
already sold on their concert.
Spearheaded by the then director of
Culture Arthur Bird and the now Co-ordinator of Steel Pan
Barbara Mason, the Cultural Development Division launched a
serious programme to revive and re-introduce steel pan to
Antigua, targeting the younger market.

Teachers and the National Cultural Foundation.
The two-part project includes a three-week
camp at Harrison College, that began on Monday, as well as a
performance at the Central Bank cathedral plaza, which will
be held on September 1. The event will give the students a
chance to demonstrate their newly-honed skills.

Address by Patrick
Arnold, President, Pan Trinbago,
at the launch of the G-Pan
|
|
|
|
Trinidad -
I want to begin by saying, on behalf of Pan Trinbago, how very
pleased we are to be part of this evening’s initiative. This has
to be a proud moment for every citizen of Trinidad & Tobago.
It also has to be a moment of great pride for every individual
associated with the steelpan movement in this country.
It has to be so for every steelpan player in Trinbago, and
more so for those who toiled with the evolution of the instrument
in the early days and continuing.
As we all know, the steelpan emerged from among the masses and
from among the poor and underprivileged in our society.
The early pioneers therefore lacked the technology and resources
available to others working in the field today.
And yet, out of what was available to them, and out of their
very humble circumstances, they were able to give to the world
the most important musical instrument invented during the last
century.

Sonatas Launch Brings
Out the Best
|
|
|
New York
- This past weekend New York's Sonatas Steel Orchestra held
its annual steelband launch at KC Hideaway in Brooklyn.
Sonatas' launch is traditionally a great place to hear New
York steelband music at it's best on a Summer evening.
This year's event did not disappoint. With many pan
notables in attendance, the participating orchestras
delivered varied and entertaining sets that covered a wide
range of musical genres.

'Lamentation' shares licks
|
|
|
|
Toronto - Once
again "Pan Lamentation" put "Sharing Licks" into second
place in a steelband Panorama competition.
In a Saturday evening final that saw a number of bands,
including the favourites Afropan simply tying for second
place, Salah's Steelband Academy comprised mostly of young
players became the Caribana 2007 Panorama champs.
So surprising was the announcement that band members had to
be sought from around the Lamport Stadium venue before
leader Salah Wilson could come forward to receive the trophy
from chief judge Orville Wright with producer Joe Brown
looking on.

Oldest Toronto steelband now homeless
on streets
|
|
|
Toronto - The
more things change, the more they remain the same. At least
for one steelband in Toronto this is not just a cliche.
Consider the case of Afropan, which at 34 years is the
oldest steelband in Toronto. This year Caribana celebrates
40.
The 55-member band is led by celebrated
veteran pannist, the unquenchable Earl La Pierre Snr. However,
the band which according to leader La Pierre is possibly the
oldest in the Caribana has spent the entire preparation
period for the festival which takes place this weekend,
homeless and practising on the streets, just outside the
fence of its former panyard at 1 Jefferson Boulevard. When
their practice yard was sold to a new owner they were
literally told to "move yuh pan", a situation eloquently
described in the Trinidad situation by David Rudder and many
other calypsonians.
