Sonatas Launch
Leaves New York- This past Sunday, Pan Sonatas held its annual launch at KC Hideaway in Brooklyn, New York. The weather was perfect. The crowd was there. The bands were there and the music was great. Everyone present was connected with one great pan-vibe. It was no doubt the place to be for the avid steelpan music lover. The hundreds of attendees were treated to one of the best launches of the season.
It's that time of the year when steelband music reigns supreme in the Big Apple. The weekly band launches that permeate the weekend scene have become a staple among the summer "must attends" for any serious steelband music lover. Usually by this time of the year launches have begun to wind down and all attention and energies are geared toward the main goal - the panorama competition. However, on this Sunday there was a special energy in the crowd as the bands are in mid-season form and taking no prisoners. Sonatas, New York Marsicans, Harmony, Ambassadors, Despers USA and Steel Sensation provided a wide cross-section of music that covered quite a few musical genres. Once the show got on its way - about 7:15 pm with Sonatas opening the show, it was non-stop music performances through the night. The bands played in a selected rotation with each performing three pieces before giving way to the next orchestra. The show was presented in two segments, with the halftime being filled with performances by various calypsonians. All the bands performed on a high level, showing off their musical maturity and stage showmanship in front of one of the most exacting audiences in the country. Each band - clearly identifiable by its look, sound and style, was able to coax serious applause at the end of their performances. As is normally the case with New York steelbands, each band played a popular piece that resonated big-time with urban youth pop culture. Management, representatives and players from all the New York bands were present, as were some local politicians who could be seen campaigning for their upcoming electoral endeavors. Sonatas' management again presented an entertaining, orderly and quick-moving program. It was an enjoyable evening for all, and another great day for pan music in the Big Apple.
