PRESS RELEASE
CARNIVALITIS: THE CONFLICTING
DISCOURSE OF CARNIVAL
Dr. L. Trevor
Grant is the author of a new book - Carnivalitis: The Conflicting Discourse
of Carnival, a systematic, critical analysis of Carnival festivities held in
Trinidad and Tobago and abroad. The many components that are present in
Carnival such as bacchanal, confusion, controversy, exploitation and
discrimination are explored. The relationship of Carnival and social
problems like crime, homelessness and child abuse and neglect offer a new
discourse on the national festival of Trinidad and Tobago.
Despite the growing popularity of Carnival (in Trinidad and the increasing
number of countries abroad), there continues to be concerns about Carnival
particularly relating to the revenues that Carnival generates for
metropolitan cities that give approval to Carnivalists to stage The Greatest
Show on Earth.
Carnivalitis: The Conflicting Discourse of Carnival is one of the most
interesting and critical account of the cultural festival of Carnival and is
loaded with many insightful details and information not available elsewhere.
Dr. Grant has exposed the general public to a different perspective of
Carnival and has supported his theories with empirical evidence.
Carnivalitis... is a superb study of many relevant topics that Dr. Grant
explores in order to provide ongoing discourse on the festive absurdity that
is Carnival. For instance, Carnival and criminology is a fascinating study
and expose of the relationship between Carnival and crime in Trinidad and
Tobago. Very revealing statistics on homicides, suicides, kidnappings and
motor vehicle traffic accidents are presented. This chapter is extremely
valuable and shows the significance of the growing phenomenon of crime in
Trinidad and Tobago. The chapters on homelessness and child abuse are
intriguing and are not only thought provoking but provide startling
information on family life in the country.
The powerlessness of the administrators of Brooklyn’s Labor Day Carnival and
the ongoing struggles for leadership of the respective Carnivals in Toronto,
Miami, Boston... reflects badly on the accountability of Carnival
organizations abroad and is a serious cause for concern. The other chapters
in the book are just as critical and revealing and provide for interesting
discourse.
Dr. Grant has appeared on television programs such as Geraldo Rivera, Mark
Walberg, WWOR-TV News, WNYE-TV and TTT-TV (Trinidad) and on radio (WLIB,
WNYE and 95.5FM (Trinidad), and has published articles in various magazines
and newspapers such as the National Review, New York Post, Carib News,
Caribbean Life, Trinidad Express and Trinidad Guardian.
Dr. Grant spent his childhood and teenage years in Trinidad and emigrated to
New York as a young adult. Dr. Grant received Bachelor’s and Master’s
degrees from Hunter College and a Doctoral degree in Social Welfare from the
City University of New York Graduate Center. Dr. Grant is the author of
