Port-of-Spain, Trinidad
-
On any given night during the Carifesta IX
event recently concluded in Trinidad and Tobago, one could find the
presence of the national instrument somewhere on the grounds of the
Grand Market. But there was one night where it took pride
of place at the Jean Pierre Complex adjacent to the Grand Market, with some of the country's best
orchestras doing what comes naturally for them - putting on a
fantastic show for all who had the good fortune to be in attendance.
Like one of Carifesta IX's 'Signal Events' -
The Eight of Hearts Concert - held
in Laventille a few days prior, this event entitled 'Pan Voice'
again featured some of those select
bands. However - this time the venue was larger, and
for those performing later in the programme, the event unfolded under the bright lights of the sporting
facility.
The show was supposed to bring together two
distinct voices - that of the pan, and the human voice. In
addition to the steel orchestras, the Lydian Singers and Bishop
Anstey Choir were to join the cast of steelpan
performers.
When Steel Talks
(WST) was not present for the
entire show, but there are moments captured that encapsulate the
essence of the evening's glorious steelpan performances to share
with the global steelpan community.
For anyone who attended both the Eight of
Hearts Concert, and this one at the Jean Pierre Complex, it was
another great opportunity to hear the wide range of selections in
the musical arsenals of the respective bands. Renegades, Phase
II Pan Groove, Trinidad All Stars, Skiffle Bunch, Desperadoes - all put on stellar performances
with basically different repertoires. Some exercised the
option to keep current signature tunes on their list; Renegades, for example, once again
included their very popular 2006 Pan in the 21st Century selection
All Night Long, but kept the variety alive during their time in the
spotlight.
The audience grew as the show went on.
Whereas at the beginning, there was not much of a crowd, including
the VIP area in the foreground, things changed as time passed.
Some people were specifically making a beeline for the complex and its
steelpan performances, once they arrived at at the Grand Market. Others
who had visited the many booths on display in the main area,
now turned their attention, and made their way across to, the complex. And still others
made it their business to turn up and support their favorite band(s).
The evening ran smoothly
during the period
WST
was on hand. This was facilitated with
orchestras being set up on the spacious grounds beforehand, with the
players taking their places behind their instruments when it was
their turn to perform. For all those who chose this particular
evening to experience the celebrations of the Grand Market and its
activities - including this event - the steelpan gala show was a memorable facet of their Carifesta IX
experience.
