| Comments: | Well,
everyone knew that Pantonic won panorama by August 28th. The question
was which bands would occupy from second place down. is like I hear a
Radoes man say in Tonics yard when the band finished rehearsing the
night before panorama. "This is advantage." This statement came from the
brother's gut. the brother went on to say that he knew the Tonics would
win and they were strong, but he believe in helping the weak to get
strong. So with the Tonics soundly occupying position one from the night
before the rest of us made out trek to the museum to find out how the
other bands would run. Me? I try to sit in one spot in the panorama to
hear all the bands as the come across the stage. So the rama start with
CYP. I think a great injustice was done to that band by having wait on
stage for over an hour. However, they played and caused a lil excitement
when the players sang a refrain in their arrangement. the clarity with
which the player's voices came across caused some in the audience to
take note. Next to hit the stage was Casym. I am still trying to figure
out what the hell they played. It was indeed a very confusing
arrangement. I noticed the audience during Casym's incoherent piece.
Some carried on their conversation. Others saw it as an opportunity to
go and join one of the long bathroom line. Better to deal with that
funk. Needless to say, I cannot understand their coming second. But such
is the ways of wiadca paNOrama. Anyone informed of that organization
history with panorama could recall numerous fiasco with the score sheet.
Remember 1978 with a band called Satisfiers who wiadca claim won the
rama. Only to find out next day through the vine that a wiadca official
owed money to the skipper of Satisfier and honored that debt panorama
night. Or, when Despers won in 93 with Dust in Yuh Face - a hodge-podge
of a piece - and members of the audience rained bottles on the stage.
Also, the consecutive years (6) that the judges said Despers won the
rama and the players in the band knew better and they would just sneak
their pans out of the museum grounds down to their panyard without any
fanfare or joy in their faces. Yes indeed, there is a history of corrupt
judging from a very corrupt organization. And it continues today under
the new and improve wiadca led by "young" people. So, I did not lost any
sleep figuring out how Casym came second. The band that really shook up
the crowd the night of the 2003 rama was Demstars. Their Pandora was
tight and free and comfortable for their pannist to play with. And boy
did they dance her. Demstars played in position five and they made the
audience stop and take note. Conversations ceased. All eyes and ears
were glued front stage. Looking at Demstars on the jumbotron I saw a
personality coming from the band. There was a spirit and a joy that
emanated from the band that pulled the audience in like magnet. Again,
there was not any groundbreaking arrangement but the band held on to the
music and played it well. A special mention to Demstars rhythm section
with timbales crackin, drummer swaying, scratcher cutting and iron
section holding it down, Demstars set the pace for bands coming behind.
I do not think that Radoes did justice to their piece, Passion, OOps,
almost forgot to mention Despers passion. Should really talk about their
outfit first, but I would leave that alone. Let victoria secret or some
lingerie expert address that. Passion is a simple pop-song type calypso
with a nice hook. Anyone who knows the song wait for the hook to really
do their dance. Mr Despers and their two arrangers wring the sweetness
completely out of the song and and left the song panting on the stage
for life. I could tell the audience was pissed. Because when the Dj
played the song to introduce the band on stage the crowd was on their
feet wailing. So that was a disappointment. Marsicans? Too fast. They
like they were going to mars with that pace. This is a band that raises
a lot of dust when they in their panyard. Somehow they cannot seem to
transfer that interest on stage. I know Brother Pelham would have like
to have gotten a won in TnT and a won in NYC. Sonatas was typical. Same
old Pro. Adlib? These young people need some direction in music towards
a contemporary sound. Five, six years ago when I first heard Adlib, they
had so much promise. Their music sound dated like four decades ago. It
is not fair to the youg people in the band. Who else? Sesame? they
definitely did not deserve last place. Knowing those small minds at
wiadca they probably punish Sesame for running away the last two years
to play in the alternative rama. How else could one explain Casym second
place and Sesame last place? So. my humble opinion is Tonics, Radoes
Demstars, Sonatas, Marsicans as the top five in that order. By the way,
after two years of protesting wiadca's lousy treatment of the culture,
the pan organization went back in 2003 and accept the same miserable
conditions they bolted from in the first place. The audio was horrible,
the judging corrupt, and the pay I don't even think it was raised.
Congratulations to Pantonic. Give Thanxs.
