When Steel Talks

1st annual Steel band Festival in Zurich
at NORDfest Zurich-Oerlikon - June, 25th - 27th 2004

Few of us would have guessed that the inauguration of the new ‘MFO Park’ in northern Zurich, in 2002, would have been the launch pad one of the greatest festivals in Zurich. However, thanks to the tremendous work of numerous groups, clubs, associations, performers, artists and volunteers, there is a distinct possibility that the NORDfest held last year, would be repeated this year, to surpass what was held before. The plans are to increase the proportion of artist participation and to produce top quality entertainment that benefits our community. The announcement is indeed an important one now that NORDfest has a fix place in the official festival schedule of Zurich.

The steel band Off Beat, and the youth steel band, Steel Magic, as well as a number of active groups in the northern part of Zurich, have been approached to organise a steel band festival over three days within the festival itself. It is extremely important that we do a good job, (which should include proper planning and consultation); if this event is to become the annual steel band festival we envisage it to become.  It has the potential of becoming the first annual steel band festival in town. Our efforts here may well shape future participation in the steel band movement.

Something different this way comes…

For those for whom a steel drum conjures up images of a cruise ship or a Caribbean vacation, a pleasant surprise awaits in the form of a Father’s Day show at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.  The instrument’s humble origins notwithstanding, pan has played many genres of music, if not as many venues.  The show on June 20th, 2004 marks the debut of the Pan Jazz format  at  Lincoln Center.
