Olatunji Yearwood wowed the crowd with his scintillating delivery of Wild and Wonderful. |
PORT-OF-SPAIN, TRINIDAD: Olatunji Yearwood’s
rendering of the pan song titled Wild and
Wonderful for Panorama 2009 won rave reviews at
a special edition of Silver Stars Steel
Orchestra’s Parang and Steel Concert series on
November 2.
Delivering his trademark energetic performance
at the concert, staged to coincide with the
band’s 60th anniversary, observed between
November 1-8, the young entertainer heightened
the cultural showcase.
Appearing on a playbill that included parang
group Los Dinamicos, former Calypso Monarch
Denyse Plummer and host Silver Stars, Yearwood
earned kudos for his appeal and vibrant
performing style before a mature audience.
However, he almost missed out on the opportunity
to perform the selection composed by Alvin
Daniell and Edwin Pouchet.
Earlier that evening, Yearwood performed in a
play held at the Central Bank Auditorium in
Port-of-Spain titled Penis Monologues.
When time came for him to take the Silver Stars
stage, Yearwood was not present. Daniell
took the microphone and apologized for
Yearwood’s absence.
He informed patrons that instead of a live
performance from the soca heartthrob, they’ll be
treated to a recording. The audio version of the
song had just begun when Yearwood came running
into Silver Star’s pan yard. He got the
attention of Daniell, the DJ stopped the music
and the audience saluted his presence with
cheers. He took the stage and apologized
for being late, but judging from the audience’s
response all was forgiven, and he went on to
satisfy their entertainment needs.
In an brief interview, Daniell said Wild and
Wonderful is one of many exciting musical items
he and Pouchet have collaborated on for Carnival
2009. He disclosed said the song had
already been chosen by Tobago-based conventional
steel orchestra Katzenjammers as it
tune-of-choice.
