Global - Fourteen Antigua & Barbuda primary and secondary school steel orchestras competed in the country’s Independence school Panorama, held on the evening of October 30 at the Yasco Sport complex in the twin-island nation’s capital of St. John’s. The ranking system was used to judge the Panorama, which saw both defending champs in the primary and secondary divisions retain their respective titles.
Playing a Veron Henry-arrangement of King Obstinate’s Children Melee, Villa Primary School held its own over second-placed Sunny Side Tetorial and four other music rivals in the primary category, to claim championship bragging rights for another year. Together with Eustace “Gatux” Henry, arranger Veron Henry also undertook tuning responsibilities for all the steel orchestras which participated in this year’s Panorama.
St. Joseph’s Academy, the 2011 secondary school winners, trounced seven fellow steel orchestras which challenged them in the 2012 competition, coming out on top for yet another year, and while playing from position one in their category. Their performance was still strong enough to impress the judges after all eight senior bands had performed. Veteran arranger Victor “Babu” Samuel ably equipped the steel orchestra from St. Joseph’s for their musical task with his arrangement of Red Hot Flames’ Jammin’ Down Town.
