Desperadoes Harmonises its Support for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Press Release

Letterhead - Desperadoes Steel Orchestra

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - On the occasion of the United Nation’s observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25th 2018, Desperadoes Steel Orchestra joins with the various global voices in demanding a safer and more nurturing environment for all women and young girls; particularly within the steelpan fraternity. It is our belief that the eradication of discrimination, abuse and violence against our women can only auger well for the sustainability of our heritage as well as, our nation’s peace and productivity.

This year’s theme #HearMeToo reminds us all that the opinions, rights and dignity of women everywhere are to be continuously anticipated and monitored, in addition to, respected and addressed, in keeping with the further advancement of the steelpan fraternity.

As musicians, our concern for our mothers, sisters, spouses, daughters et al; would have truly come to the fore in the late 1950s/60s, when our stage side first welcomed Ms. Jemma Warren and later, Ms. Ursula Tudor. Since then, although the senior orchestra is still predominantly male, our enrolment of young girls into a nurturing environment, as represented by our own Despers Youths Steel Orchestra is well over 54%. Overall however, the significant and invaluable contributions of our female musicians at all levels of seniority and operations within the Desperadoes Movement, cannot be ignored. There is no way in which we could have attained such stature and success, without their insight, commitment, passion and spirit of volunteerism.

As such, in keeping with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, which seek to establish a socially just world for all global citizens by that year, the Executive and Stage side musicians of Desperadoes, continue to pledge our unwavering support for the enhancement and protection of our women. Such a stance, is also in direct support of theme 1 of Government’s National Development Strategy or Vision 2030, which speaks to no person being left behind as we progress towards developed country status. Therefore, as one of the largest and most influential forces in the steelpan fraternity internationally, it is hoped that our public acknowledgement and intent to continue to remedy some of the prevailing inequalities for this community of musicians and technicians, will inspire a wave of positive change and growth.

Desperadoes Steel Orchestra stands in support of zero tolerance of the abuse of our women and children.

Management,
Desperadoes Steel Orchestra
