by When Steel Talks

Literally hours before Brooklyn steel orchestra Utopia Pan Soul:  The Next Generation was to perform at a major Rhode Island function, a disgruntled care-taker "took" an ax to all the band's instruments, and destroyed over fifteen drums which included background, front line and bass pans.

EDITOR'S DIARY: Symphony No.2 - Wednesday 07, July-2004
by HARRY MAYERS
Barbados Daily Nation

Morris Greenidge will, I trust, excuse my Bajan presumptiousness in calling his Symphony No. 2 For Steel Orchestra, the Bridgetown Symphony because I feel very sure that is how it will be remembered and referred to after he presents it at Heroes’ Square on Friday night.

The 40-minute, four-movement work to be performed by Steelband, The Royal Barbados Police Band, and a massed choir – they are aiming for 375 voices – is in commemoration of Bridgetown’s 375th anniversary celebrations.

Four years ago, Morris Greenidge the creative musician, composed and presented at the Frank Collymore Hall, his first symphony, known as The Holetown Symphony.

It commemorated Holetown, where the first settlers landed and it is considered the first work of its kind.

It was written for the steel orchestra which he loves and promotes, and the organ.

SEEN UP NORTH: Jazz, soca, pan at Lincoln Centre - Sunday 04, July-2004

Barbados Daily Nation
by TONY BEST

If it's true that the crossroads of the world of music often intersect in New York City, then one of the best-kept musical secrets was recently exposed to full public view in Manhattan.

And it took Barbados’ Arturo Tappin, perhaps the Caribbean’s premiere jazz saxophonist, to play a key role in exposing it in a dramatic fashion.

The secret is the successful fusion of steel pan and jazz and the meeting point was the world famous Lincoln Centre.

All Work And No Play (Yet)
Pantonic Builds New Yard

Web Posted - Wednesday, July 28, 2004
by When Steel Talks

New York's Defending Panorama Champs Pantonic Steel Orchestra put away the pan sticks and picked up the drill, shovel, nails and hammers...  Working through the rain, mud and cold, the Pantonic family showed that they are much more than a steel orchestra, as they designed and laid the foundation for their new rehearsal area/panyard...  No one was spared from the labour-intensive work as Pantonic's captains and top panmen constructed what will be soon known as the 'Pan Diamond'...  click for full story

Sesame Flyers off to a "Flying Start"
for 2004, in their brand new space

Web Posted - Wednesday, July 28, 2004
by When Steel Talks

For 2004, Sesame  Flyers Steel Orchestra is off to a flying start, and is one of the first bands set up in their newly-secured space for the 2004 Pan season.  Located at 3607 Church Avenue, (between Brooklyn Ave. & East 39th St.) Brooklyn, New York, pannists were already practicing last week.

Last year was an extremely taxing one for the youth-oriented steel orchestra, as they struggled to secure an outdoor rehearsal area/pan yard, in preparation for the 2003 Pan season.  It was about one week before the major Panorama competition at the end of August, that they were afforded a last-minute outdoor pan yard, but the ordeal had taken its toll.

A holiday camp for adults where they would be taught to beat pan-in many instances by their children.  This was one of the suggestions made my students of the Golden Hands Steel Orchestra when asked to decide on fund-raising ventures.

Fantastic end to Pan Yard Sensations 2004

By Cori Baynes & Peter Ray Blood

They came from all corners of the nation; pan lovers in their hundreds, drawn like moths to light to the sweet strains of the national instrument. A joint collaboration between Pan Trinbago and Tidco, the 2004 edition of Panyard Sensations came to a climax last weekend in the west and south, at the panyards of Valley Harps and NLCB Fonclaire steel orchestras.
