Pan , Calypso and the Calypsonian Special
A TRIBUTE TO PAN AND CALYPSO
PIONEERS
By Dr. L. Trevor Grant
The history of music in Trinidad and Tobago is rich and exciting and
continues to be influential in the potpourri of musical genres
throughout the musical world. The calypso, soca, chutney and parang are
all musical expressions that were given meaning to in Trinidad and
Tobago and continues to make an impact throughout the Caribbean region,
America, Canada and England.
The steelpan, which endured many negative influences from its inception
in the tumultuous 1940s, has progressed to become one of the most
dynamic and enthralling musical instruments of the 21st century.
The
steelpan is now a permanent fixture in most orchestras and big bands and
could be heard as a solo instrument on television and radio programs.
Pan giants like Len Boogsie Sharpe, Robert Greenidge, Clive Bradley, Jit
Samaroo, Pelham Goddard, Bertie Marshall and Ellie Mannette have taken
the innovative instrument to the top of the musical ladder and it is
beyond one’s imagination to tell the future of this acoustic instrument.

Pan Jazz Moves to

Garvin Blake and
Friends to perform
at the Uptown Renaissance Restaurant
New York
- Pan
Jazz is moving uptown, literally, to the Uptown Renaissance
Restaurant in Harlem on Sunday May 1. Making the move for the
day, or rather the evening, are
Garvin Blake and Friends who received critical acclaim at
Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall on Father's Day last year and
wowed the audience with their performance.
Uptown Renaissance restaurant
opened its doors a little over a year
ago on April 9, 2004.
The
establishment astutely recognized the importance of their community,
and therefore remained sensitive to its needs. Subsequently
the Callistes have opted to carry on in the tradition of the
preceding establishment, and ensure that clientele from their
surrounding community continue to feel welcome, while simultaneously
catering to consumers from all areas.
World Steelband Music Festival finals for
New York
London's loss will be New York's gain, as the World
Steelband Festival finals will now be staged in New York City after
the London organisers wanted Pan Trinbago to reschedule the event,
which was carded to take place in London at the end of next month.
Pan Trinbago president Patrick Arnold told the Tobago News: "The
persons who are charged with the responsibility for organising the
festival in London wanted us to push back the date to October, but
we want the Festival to be held during the summer when the weather
conditions will be more conducive."
Four Trinidad bands, Exodus, Laventille Sound Specialists, Defence
Force and Skiffle Bunch have already qualified for the finals.
They will compete against one band from the Virgin Islands, one from
Grenada, one from the University of Illinois, one from Chicago and
three from England. [Full

Terry Joseph
Pelham Goddard...to be honoured by WeBeat 2005
Organisers
of the annual WeBeat St James Festival have decided to honour master
musician and homeboy, Pelham Goddard, for his contribution to local
culture and the mosaic that is the City That Never Sleeps.
Born on Clarence Street, St James on December 12, 1946 and from soon
thereafter known to all in the village as "PG", Goddard started his
schooling at St Crispin's EC in Woodbrook and ended studies with a
music programme offered at Berklee College of Music, in
Massachusetts.
He is perhaps best known as musical director/arranger of the
phenomenal soca band, Charlie's Roots, which produced some of the
finest musicians in the genre and introduced us to the extraordinary
vocals of Christopher "Tambu" Herbert and David Michael Rudder but
PG is much more.

UA Steel uses Trinidad experience for performances By
Lauren Hillery
Arizona - Remember when field trips in
grade school consisted of touring milk factories, going to the park and
visiting retirement homes? The UA steel drum's field trip in January
make those grade school trips look, well, childish.
UA Steel, as they are called, is open to all UA students. The only
requirement is that they have to love to play steel drums.
"They love the music. It's an escape from biology and chemistry classes
all day, and they just want to come play music," said Gary Cook,
director of percussion studies. "They love the energy and the style of
music."

Ohio - When Larry
Snider strikes up the band, he does it with trash cans and the odd
car part.
``When we play gigs, people look at the steel
drums and say this sound can't be coming from trash cans, but
Mia Gormandy,

when it comes to steel drums, will make her U.S. musical debut
Saturday night with the UA Steel Drum Band.
that's what they are,'' he said. The pacer

A local middle school steel drum band has come a
long way since six students started playing ragtag, hand-me-down
drums at 7 a.m. on Fridays.
General John Stricker Middle School's Carib-bean-inspired
musical group still has its original "starter kit" of instruments

ago, but the group has added new drums each year, increased its
repertoire and taken its show on the road.
This week, the young musicians are under the

FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE CAUSED WITH THE LATEST CHANGE OF VENUE FOR THE
STAGING OF THE FINALS OF THE WORLD STEELBAND MUSIC FESTIVAL -
2004-2005 - ORCHESTRA CATEGORY.
On April 1st 2005 - whilst in the midst of preparations, Pan
Trinbago was informed by the London Secretariat that they were
unable to deliver the Event as planned in the timescale - with the
Event scheduled for May 28th to June 4th 2005.
It is to be noted that the London Secretariat had recommended the
re-scheduling of the Event from October 2001 to the new dates in
May/June 2005.
Given that the cancellation of the Event in London, England was not
Pan Trinbago's preferred option, and in our commitment to fulfill
what we know as our obligation to the hundreds of dedicated
pannists, and supporters have opted to pursue the Event in New York,
U.S.A. as an alternative location for the Finals. Additionally, Pan
Trinbago recognizes this as a more feasible proposition.
OUR NEW DATE FOR THE ORCHESTRA FINALS - JUNE 19TH 2005
THE NEW VENUE: PARAMOUNT THEATRE, MADISON SQUARE GARDENS, NEW YORK

Bradley prevails in
Pan In the 21st Century
Trinidad - In
Pan Down Memory Lane La Horquetta Pan Groove with Duvonne
Stewart's arrangement of J. C. Lodge's Someone Loves You Honey
took first place honors. World Wide was in second position, and Ice
Water Pan Ensemble (the single pan band incarnation of conventional
Merrytones Steel Orchestra) had to settle for third place. The latter
had been in the lead coming out of the preliminary phase. The show got
underway shortly before 7:00 PM, a bit later than the advertised 6:00 PM
start.
In
an exclusive follow-up with Clive Bradley, arranger for Desperadoes, the
ace musician told
When Steel Talks
that "in all
my experience, I was never called upon to do that type of work, changing
tempos and stuff. The selection (the version I worked from) was made
for that type of thing. In the [John Legend] video, the guy is playing
a piano, and there is a bass and a drum as well, and the guy is singing
his ass off. And there are only three chords in the whole tune, but the
way he [John Legend] put the chords together, it suited my liking. It
was the first time I had done that type of work, and everybody seemed to
be enthused. The band did a good job."

The Master Does It Again...
Desperadoes Take Pan In The 21st Century
Trinidad - On Saturday night Desperadoes
Steel Orchestra won the Pan In The 21st Century competition with their
rendition of John Legend's Ordinary People arranged by master
musician Clive Bradley. It was just one of those performances. The
audience seemed to know within the first 30 seconds that it was going to
be special. When it was over the audience erupted with applause and a
partial standing ovation. They knew indeed that it was one of those
memorable, very special performances and Clive Bradley and Desperadoes
had done it again - with a classic performance and
arrangement that will be talked about for the ages. The love-hate
romance that has endured for over 30 years has again reproduced a gem.
Desperadoes beat into second place, this year's 2005 panorama champion
Phase II Pan Groove, who did a version of Michael Jackson's Billie
Jean arranged by the great Len "Boogsie" Sharpe.

Despers goes Pan in the 21st Century
Trinidad -
THE 15 minutes of fireworks which started at 11.00 pm was the perfect
celebration for what followed one hour later. There was jubilation on
stage at the Queen’s Park Savannah on Saturday night as WITCO
Desperadoes and La Horquetta Pan Groove were crowned winners in the TSTT
sponsored Pan in The 21st Century and Pan Down Memory Lane competitions.
For the third year running, arranger Duvonne Stewart placed the
Arima-based La Horquetta Pan Groove in winners’ row in the Pan Down
Memory Lane competition. Stewart took JC Lodge’s “Someone Loves You
Honey” and made it into a gem for pan while his charges executed the
arrangement with minor flaws. After their performance it was all over,
bar the shouting.

Steel Drum

North Dakota - A concert featuring small

2001. A generous donation from Harvey amd Diane Shilling allowed Johnson
to purchase the steel drums. The ensemble, with its distinctive
Caribbean flavor, has been a popular addition to VCSU's music program.
"Although I conduct large ensembles, directing small ensembles also
provides a great deal of satisfaction," Johnson said. "Students interact
in a personal way, and the interdependence of the small group fosters

the balmy, at-last-it's-spring weather. Maybe it was pent-up energy

The

The Times / Lucy Schaly
Or perhaps it was just the knowledge that they'd be leaving for a
Myrtle Beach concert the next day that left the members of the
Ambridge Area High School Steel Drum Band literally bouncing around
the basement band room Wednesday morning, putting each other in casual
headlocks, debating shoe styles and showing off impromptu drum solos.
But when Ambridge band director Sal Aloe and steel drum director Todd
Hartman took their place in front of the 30-some steel drum players,
the teenagers quickly trained their eyes on their sheet music and
drums. They don't just play, they perform in the full sense of the
word - dropping low over their drums to start one song with just the
softest tones, spinning around with their hands raised during a break
in one melody.

The majority of
players in Japan are women. Many Japanese like the sound of
the steelpan. It is my private opinion the sound of the
steelpan is similar to the "koto" which is a Japanese traditional
