who has been invited as a guest of honour.
Band member Sheryl Davis, who has played tenor pans with the band for 23
years, said: "Brian will be there along with a lot of the original

Trinidad
- The clear line between private enterprise
and State projects is rendered fuzzy when partnering obtains, as is
the case with this weekend's Plymouth Jazz Festival, which is why we
feel comfortable joining nationwide consternation regarding the
absence of pan.
We would not likely intervene if
the festival was a purely private adventure, since enshrined
freedoms safeguard investors against such intrusions, limiting
observers to comment only on the basis of pragmatic or personal
preferences.

World Pan prizes

foreign bands threaten lawsuits
Terry Joseph
Trinidad - It has been ten
months since the second World Steelband Music Festival
concluded at New York's Madison Square Garden but even the
winning orchestra, Sagicor Exodus, is yet to receive a
single cent of its US$100,000 cash prize. Pan Trinbago
president Patrick Arnold said his organisation (which
markets itself internationally as the world governing body
for pan) was being portrayed in a bad light for failing to
pay prize money for the contest, which took place on June 19
last year.

Exhibition pays tribute to old musicians
Bermuda -
Calypso originated in Trinidad
and Tobago from the West African musical genre called kaiso, which
was used as a means of communication among slaves. The lyrics were
composed in patois and were smarting in nature, often depicting the
slaves' dislike, especially towards their masters!
Calypso melodies have been a staple of the steel pan repertoire and
Rudolph Commissiong and his Carib Caciques Steel band, later known
as the Esso Steel Band, first introduced it to the island.
Admission to the museum is free and visitors get a thorough review
of Bermuda's music history, its roots and how it evolved. It is well
worth it to attend to see priceless artifacts such as the original
LPs of the musicians as well as timeless photos both candid and
staged.

Steel band offers exploration of culture
Possible grant to open new doors in percussion ensemble program
by
JENNA MITCHELL Editor in Chief
Texas
- Last summer music professor Dr. Daniel R. Smithiger began creating
a grant that, if accepted, would adorn the campus and community with
a new worldly sound.
The new sound is Soca music. It
contains a mixture of soul and calypso beats that originate from
Trinidad, although many carry the misconception that this Caribbean
style music comes from Jamaica.
Many people are familiar with Soca
when it is referred to as steel band music because the names can be
used interchangeably.

Arizona
- While many people play a variety of
musical instruments, a Bisbee resident has taken this
activity to a different level.
Peggy Cole performs her music on steel pans,
and will soon be holding classes for young people who are
interested in learning to play the Caribbean steel pan.
Before coming to Bisbee from Winter Harbor,
Maine, Cole was in a 10-piece band. She played snare
drum as lead drummer for the Maine St. Andrews Pipes and
Drums.
In the early 1980s, Cole discovered steel pan
music in Maine when a community band put on a concert for
the children in the town.

Discrimination against

AINSWORTH MOHAMMED
Trinidad
- THE EDITOR: I attended Monday night’s edition of Trinidad and
Tobago Music Festival and was amazed that the organisers saw it
necessary to substitute the Jamaican judge, Dr Lewin with a
local one, Mr Jessel Murray, for the steelband category. Why was
this considered necessary? Was it not a music competition?
Wasn’t the official adjudicator competent to judge the music
offered, regardless of the instrument?

Holman continues to inspire
Trinidad - Veteran steelpan
composer Ray Holman hopes his latest CD compilation inspires
more young composers to create music for the national
instrument. Holman says the album, aptly titled Changing Time,
is the fruit of many a sleepless night and is dedicated to the
true composer.
"I hope this
project will inspire more people to compose. It's not an easy
road because it's more difficult to create a song, have it
recorded and then rehearsed as opposed to just taking a popular
calypso and arranging it but the satisfaction you get out of it
is really worth it and I believe as a composer its the way the
go," he said at the album's launch at Hilton Trinidad on
Wednesday.
