Change in
Pace and Time
for Mark Loquan
New York -
Composer Mark Loquan has a change in rhythm and pace after the
hectic 2006 panorama season in Trinidad and Tobago. With his
composition 'Colours Again' vocalized by soca star Destra Garcia a
popular choice among steel orchestras for panorama, and another -
'Good Times' - sung by Denyse Plummer also finding favor with other
bands, one might be tempted to think there were enough accolades to
go around for the time being - at least until next year.

his classmates in the school's steel drum band is part of their
effort to organize a benefit concert to raise money for
industrial-strength dryers and a washer for the Drop Inn Center, a

Panweekend 2006
Dortmund's 2nd Annual Steelpan Festival
Germany - Dortmund,
Germany is the place to be this weekend as its annual steelpan
festival gets underway. PanWeekend 2006 will take place for the
second consecutive year and the venue is Dortmund's Solendo beach.
The 2005 steelpan festival featured one week of
events and performances. According to WerNer Weidensdorfer whose
steelband club, PanKultur organized and hosts the festival,
overwhelming response to the first festival led to the decision to try
to make it an annual event. The key difference this time around
is the shortened format - one weekend instead of one week.
Last year, the event coincided with and became a fitting tribute to
the 10th anniversary of the existence of PanKultur.

When Steel Talks caught up with Dr. Ajamu

at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia. The symposium is
entitled “Pan in the 21st Century: the Scholarship and
Music of Steel Drums.”
The first symposium took place in
1995 under the title of "Fifty Years of the Steelpan." This year's
event is designed to promote a more intellectual outlook on the pan,
Nyomba told When Steel Talks.
The idea of the symposium is to bring together various scholars from
diverse academic disciplines, and recognized leaders in the
steelband culture, who are involved in research on pan, for the
purpose of starting an intellectual movement on pan. Nyomba looks
forward to having the proceedings published from the papers
submitted and presented. In addition, he believes that the pan

Colgrain Whyte and the gospel
according to pan
Guyana
-
If
genius really is 99 per cent hard work and a mere one percent
talent, then Colgrain Whyte is in a league of his own, because the
commitment and the mastery that he has brought to steel pan in
Guyana equates to so much more.
Before he even knew about vowels
and constants in the English Language, Whyte was playing notes on
make-shift steel pans - a couple of Carnation milk tins. Three
decades later, that precocious lad is one of the finest Guyana has
seen in a long, long time.

Bradley's
Arrangements
by
Steve Taylor
It is a fact that the estate of
Bradley will now be involved in all types of issues concerning his
works of arrangements, compositions and so on including as a
mathematician, if he came up with any new mathematical laws. After
all, all types of wealth in any form of Mr Bradley, now automatically
passes to his estate. It is legally referred to as intestate. The
natural heirs however with or without a clear will, can make claims
and the courts must entertain such claims.
What I am suggesting is that three
parties at least must be involved in making a decision for any further
use of Mr Bradley’s musical arrangements and other music formats. His
estate can go as far back when he played in Esquires combo back in the
sixties once the present estate owners were part of him back then.
Despers is partially correct to say that they own the specific
arrangements of music which were done to songs which also have their
owners, for a specific event called panorama.

in the 2006 finals of the National Panorama competition, Starlift
Steel Orchestra is a testimony to the tenacity and patience mainly
of its present arranger Ray Holman, and also his dedication to the

grounding here that contributed in part to his rise to prominence as
a musician and performer of international repute. Last place

Row brews
over Bradley’s music
Trinidad -
Band manager Fletcher confirmed that management had
undertaken to score all Bradley’s music as their main
project for this year. And when asked about the job going to
Frauker, he told Newsday that Frauker asked to do it, but
they had already called on assistant arranger of the band,
Chantal Esdelle, to work on the project, and Frauker would
help Esdelle. Asked about who the music belongs to he said
that it belongs to the band and was paid for by the band. As
regards the copyrights of the scores, COTT’s CEO Allison
Demas said that only the original composition is registered
with her organization and for Despers to carry out their
project they would need permission from Bradley’s heirs and
the various songwriters.
