Darren Derrick, general manager of

Change in
Pace and Time
for Mark Loquan
New York -
Composer Mark Loquan has a change in rhythm and pace after the
hectic 2006 panorama season in Trinidad and Tobago. With his
composition 'Colours Again' vocalized by soca star Destra Garcia a
popular choice among steel orchestras for panorama, and another -
'Good Times' - sung by Denyse Plummer also finding favor with other
bands, one might be tempted to think there were enough accolades to
go around for the time being - at least until next year.
Ohio
- Tyler McCleary doesn't have a lot of free time lately.
The
Clark Montessori High School sophomore is balancing press
interviews, steel drum practice, meetings with radio station
executives and a photo shoot with funk star Bootsy Collins.
The work of McCleary, 15, and
his classmates in the school's steel drum band is part of their
effort to organize a benefit concert to raise money for
industrial-strength dryers and a washer for the Drop Inn Center, a
homeless shelter in Over-the-Rhine.

Dortmund's 2nd Annual Steelpan Festival
Germany - Dortmund,
Germany is the place to be this weekend as its annual steelpan
festival gets underway. PanWeekend 2006 will take place for the
second consecutive year and the venue is Dortmund's Solendo beach.
The 2005 steelpan festival featured one week of
events and performances. According to WerNer Weidensdorfer whose
steelband club, PanKultur organized and hosts the festival,
overwhelming response to the first festival led to the decision to try
to make it an annual event. The key difference this time around
is the shortened format - one weekend instead of one week.
Last year, the event coincided with and became a fitting tribute to
the 10th anniversary of the existence of PanKultur.

Bradley's
Arrangements
by Steve Taylor
It is a fact that the estate of
Bradley will now be involved in all types of issues concerning his
works of arrangements, compositions and so on including as a
mathematician, if he came up with any new mathematical laws. After
all, all types of wealth in any form of Mr Bradley, now automatically
passes to his estate. It is legally referred to as intestate. The
natural heirs however with or without a clear will, can make claims
and the courts must entertain such claims.
What I am suggesting is that three
parties at least must be involved in making a decision for any further
use of Mr Bradley’s musical arrangements and other music formats. His
estate can go as far back when he played in Esquires combo back in the
sixties once the present estate owners were part of him back then.
Despers is partially correct to say that they own the specific
arrangements of music which were done to songs which also have their
owners, for a specific event called panorama.

reminisces about the early days of women in pan:
"The first time
that I remember seeing women play Steelpan was around 1968,
somewhere around there - when three
women joined Desperadoes; one
of them was Ursula, on the tenor pan, and she still plays with the
band today. The other, Carol,
played tenor pan too, and the third, whose name
I can't recall right now, played the Bass. It was a sort of status
symbol for those guys because there were not too many bands with
women playing. They were good players. As a matter of fact, I
believe that Scrunter (Owen Reyes Johnson) wrote Woman On the

There are many educators in Trinidad who
incorporate pan into their music schools. Some of these schools may teach many
different musical instruments, and voice, while others solely concentrate on the
pan. Furthermore, the amount of women running music schools in Trinidad is
commendable . There is
however, one lady in particular, who was very successful this past year [2005]

Pan Panorama
By the 70’s, fighting competitions
were replaced by musical competitions and it was the band from
Laventille that stole the hearts of many in the earlier years.
They
were known then as WITCO Gay Desperados. After an overseas trip
the word gay was omitted as it was mistakenly assumed that the
band members were homosexual. The
competition is called “Panorama”. It is in this competition
that the National Steelband Champions are recognized and crowned
each year during carnival celebrations. The Panorama
Competition is considered by many to be the highlight of the
various activities during the carnival season. In 1970 Despers
won the championship with a song named “Margie”. Their leader,
the famous Rudolph Charles, was remembered for his talent as the
“man with the hammer” and for his trade mark towel draped on his
shoulder. In this painting a cross section of our society is
portrayed, as well as the way we dance and make merry,
especially in the “North Stand”, a temporary structure at the
Queen’s Park Savannah created and used during various
competitions each year. The “Rocket Pan” shown in the middle
was a new pan invention at that time.
