The New York
Steelband Experience |
|
|
New
York -
We at Basement Recordings have been extremely fortunate, to
have been able to rub shoulders and work with the world's most gifted, talented
and renowned composers / arrangers / producers of steelband music. These
musical titans are known and recognized by single names. You have only to
mention - Bradley, Boogsie, Pelham, Jit, Greenidge and Smooth to name a
few - for immediate recognition. Of equal value has been our being
able to capture the world's première steel orchestras in the heat of the
competition season.

|
NYU debuts Steel Drum Ensemble
New
York - NYU's (New York
University) Department of
Music and Performing Arts Professions held a special tribute to
composer Philip Glass last night at the Frederick Lowe Theatre in
the Village, New York.
The event - "A Philip Glass Birthday Concert," was the first
ever all- percussion concert performance of the composer's music. The NYU
Percussion Ensemble and the NYU Steel Drum Ensemble were among the
featured performers on what started out as a slightly rainy
Wednesday evening. That did not present an obstacle for the
almost seventy-five percent audience in attendance at the theatre.
Show director was the renowned
conductor/timpanist Jonathan Haas. Josh Quillen is the
director of the NYU Steel Drum Ensemble.

Sizzle or fizzle?
|
|
|
Barbados
- A massive 300-member steel orchestra, reputedly the largest ever
assembled, beat out the sweet tunes of Lord Kitchener's classic
Pan In A Minor.
They were surrounded by the dancing,
waving party people, stilt walkers and bele dancers and a dozen massive
dancing puppets designed by Minshall, which danced fluidly to the music.
A spectacular fireworks display in the
east beyond the temporary stand, capped it all off.
It was truly a beautiful spectacle.
Unfortunately, aside from those who
remained at Kensington Oval after the last firework fizzled, most
people probably did not get to witness the procession of musical stars
as their performance was tacked back on at the end and was not even
televised.

Panorama Replaces Show |
Mayor abandons alternative carnival plan
UK
- THE CONTROVERSIAL Caribbean Showcase in Hyde Park is to be axed this
year, The Voice can exclusively reveal.
The Showcase, brainchild of London
mayor Ken Livingstone, is to be ditched in favour of the annual Panorama
steelband competition staged by the Notting Hill Carnival Limited, the
company that runs the two-day extravaganza.
Livingstone introduced the Caribbean
Showcase in 2005 in an attempt to draw crowds away from the main
celebrations in Notting Hill.
The mayor had repeatedly called for
Hyde Park to play a bigger role in the carnival celebrations, despite
the street party’s historical connections with the west London Notting
Hill area.

Moods Pan Groove -
A New York Original |
|
Pan Classics in the House |
|
|
|
One
can not really have a serious discussion about pan in New York
without talking about Moods Pan Groove.
The long-time steelband music staple has it's name
permanently etched in the annals of steelband music history.
Led by their president Clyde Durant, a New York pan stalwart
and pillar of the New York steelband movement - Moods Pan
Groove established itself as one of New York's premier
orchestras through the 1980's and 1990's.
Established in 1976 by noted arranger Brian "Bean" Griffith,
Moods was always known for it's cutting edge sound and musical
direction. Musically, in many ways, Moods was ahead of
its time, as their music refused to be defined and confined to
the traditional steelband accepted boundaries and
norms. Many have surmised that it was because of their
defiant and uncompromising musical attitude, that robbed Moods
Pan Groove of more panorama victories than their sole 1977
championship. However, whatever they may have lost in panorama
wins, they more than made up for in respect from their
peers for their ability and musical influence on the sound
of pan in New York. Moreover, their music and
performances have passed the test of time and only gets
better with each passing year and listening. Moods has
laid down some of the greatest pan music ever in
the history of New York or Trinidad.

Naviessa Lake in the Spotlight |
|
|
|
St.
Kitts-Nevis - Naviessa is an accomplished pannist and dancer
having played for close to 10 years with the St.Kitts National Steel
Orchestra (SKNSO) and a little over 1 year dancing with the SKB Rythymz
Dancerz.
It will be no mystery or surprise therefore that she has a love for the
steel pan and dancing both of which occupies all if not most of her
spare time. She also enjoys reading which is rare among young people
today.
Navaiessa expresses a strong
admiration for the late Earl "Boots" Jones who nurtured her talent
as a pannist . She sees the pageant as an avenue to expose her
talent as well as an opportunity to meet new people and enjoy new
experiences.

Picnic with
the Pans |
|
|
|
Botswana - Last Tuesday Broadhurst Primary School
Steelband in Gaborone staged a concert entitled Picnic with The Pans. The
event was held to raise funds for the purchase of giant chess pieces
to be used in the new Music and Chess Garden at the School. The
garden has a large chessboard, and once complete, will provide
children with another enriching activity. Picnic with The Pans took
the form of an outdoor evening picnic concert, with guests scattered
informally in the area, eating their dinner and visiting with
friends and family. The students provided the musical
entertainment on the steelpans and the senior choir sang. It was a
very successful evening and the children are already planning the
programme for the next Picnic with the Pans! |
