Carnival of Instruments III -
Steelpan Jazz at Brooklyn's Afrika House - Utopia Pan
Soul: The Next Generation
Clears the Road
|
|
New
York - In a little more than a week and a day, New York residents were
treated to a second healthy helping of top notch steelpan jazz.
June 16 had marked the third such
show at Lincoln Center in New York. This time
it was at Afrika House located in Brooklyn, New York as the headliners Garvin Blake
and his ensemble, Jambalasi, The Andrea Rose Trio featuring
Jason "Peanut" Isaacs and of course Utopia Pan Soul:
the Next Generation, and more all treated the
packed house to a very special show appropriately called
"Carnival of Instruments III." It was truly Steelpan Jazz,
at times with a Caribbean flavor, with no additives, no faking the move, no artificial anything.

Those Who Made It Happen
Behind the Scenes
of the Steelpan Jazz Concert
|
|
New York - Shows around the world come and go, and the audiences are customarily treated to experiences that keep them talking for days, and usually for a lot longer. But behind the scenes, much planning leads up to such events, involving all parties concerned. On the actual day of the show, artists may be on location for dress rehearsals or sound checks. Then as the shows themselves unfold, the discreet personnel whose job it is to keep the patrons happy (and sometimes even in line), and the events in professional standing - spring into action, walking that fine line - simultaneously being 'invisible' as to be unobtrusive, yet immediately on hand to 'save the day' if need be. At New York's Lincoln Center it is no different, and these characteristics held true for the recent Steel Pan Jazz concert on Father's Day weekend.

challenge. Pamberi has invited three (3) Steel
Orchestras to join them in a Community Concert at its
spacious facilities. Phase II Pan Groove of Woodbrook,
Renegades of East Port-of-Spain and birdsong of Tunapuna.

generally, beginning at 6.00 pm until 12.00 midnight.

You’ve Got To Be Healthy
To Play Mas:
Healthy Habits Create Healthy Living
|
|
New
York - At George Wingate Park, in Brooklyn, New York,
the sweet sounds of steel band music filled the crisp,
breezy morning. The power walkers circled the track, the
stilt dancer towered, dancing effortlessly against the sea
blue sky. “You’ve got to be healthy to play mas,” remarked
Ms. Yolanda Lezama-Clark, RN as she managed an information
table at the “Walk For Fitness Event”. The Walk For Fitness
Event was the morning component of Kings County Hospital
Center – Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Nursing and Rehabilitation
Center, Annual Health Fair. Ms. Lezama-Clark, the daughter
of the distinguished Carlos Lezama, is currently president
of the West Indian American Day Carnival Association
(WIADCA).

Trinidad
- Why gild the lily? Why, when so much pain and effort (not to mention taxpayers’ money) was spent to produce a concert hall with near perfect acoustics that are the envy of professional musicians in the developed world, why blithely brush aside the superb acoustics of the remodelled Queen’s Hall to fill the stage with what amounts to eye-candy and special lighting effects that have nothing to do with music or music appreciation?

Steelpan Jazz at the House

New York
- In an

legendary Jazz great, Max Roach said that the
"steelpan belongs on a world stage." Max,
always forward thinking and musically
progressive knew what was soon coming down the
pipe.

Steelpan
great Neville Jules addresses the
audience after receiving the 2007 AEI,
Life Time Achievement Award |
The
rafters of Lincoln Center are still shaking from
the tremendous musical tribute Robert Greenidge,
Ralph MacDonald, David Rudder and cast put forth
to the steelpan instrument and its pioneers this
past weekend. As a matter of fact it was
a magnificent party for the steelpan ancestors.
They were all present, smiling - enjoying the
journey and recognition that their intelligence,
genius, sacrifices, blood, sweat and tears were not in vain.
Looking down from above were Rudy King,
Rudolph 'The Hammer' Charles, Lord Kitchener, Clive Bradley,
Winifred Atwell, Lord Blakie, Mighty Terror, Leo
Coker, Lincoln Noel and many other greats to
numerous to name; they now joined Miles Davis, Dizzy
Gillespie, Tito Fuentes, Thelonious Monk,
Charlie Parker and the many others whose
pictures adorn the walls outside the Allen Room
and Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center. And
living steelpan legend the Honorable Neville
Jules registered his pleasure about the
journey of pan during his lifetime when
accepting the 2007 Life Time Achievement Award.

keyboardist Onaje Allan Gumbs, drummer Buddy Williams,

musical aggregation looked forward to by many, one that
fulfilled expectations, and that prompted a sell-out of tickets

Steelpan Jazz at the House
of Jazz at Lincoln Center |
|
New York -
After three years, the city's pan fraternity have now become
accustomed to having access to high-class steelpan entertainment
as part of their choice of Father's Day weekend celebrations.
This year's show was held on Saturday, as opposed to Sunday
(Father's Day), previously the case in 2004 and 2006.
Many patrons arrived at
Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rosehall about an hour before the
8:00 PM for the complimentary pre-concert reception hosted by
event organizers Abstract Entertainment Inc. (AEI).
Various event sponsors such as Moneygram were hand to inform
guests about their services, and to distribute product samples.

Pan is at Lincoln Center and There to Stay |
|
Steelpan Jazz at the House
of Jazz at Lincoln Center |
|
New York -
Ralph
K. Ramsey (right), president of Abstract Entertainment Inc. (AEI) is the
man behind the scenes that has put pan in Lincoln Center for
three years in a four-year period. The inaugural year was
2004, when the pride of Long Island - ADLIB Steel Orchestra, was
part of a fabulous line-up which included pannist extraordinaire
Garvin Blake and Friends, Liam Teague and Arturo Tappin, and
Andy Narell and company. The place was Lincoln Center's
Alice Tully Hall. That year many attendees came in
wonderment, amazed that a show filled with so many major pan
artists was uncompromisingly featured at one of New York city's
iconic venues. And in keeping with the grandeur of the
event, one of the legends of the steelpan movement, Emmanuel
'Jack' Riley was one of the first two recipients of AEI's Life
Time Achievement Award. The other was world-famous drummer
Max Roach who many years ago declared that "Pan should be on a
world stage!" |

crowd calling for more. Indeed, another successful
show for the event producers Abstract Entertainment Inc. (AEI),
whose name has become synonymous with high level successful

Higher Levin
& Meyer Levin Steel Orchestras-
Still Reaching for Higher Heights |
|
 Brooklyn,
New York
- The
Higher Levin Steel Orchestra, and the sixth, seventh and
eighth grade steel orchestras at host institution Meyer
Levin - IS (Intermediate School) 285 - are still reaching
for the 'higher heights,'
and show no sign of looking back at all.
If anything, Meyer Levin's 4th Annual
All Star Culture Shock held on June 15, served notice that the
upcoming pannists are proud to be part of the Meyer Levin
legacy, under the proud stewardship of director Tichard
Chapman. Beaming parents, family,
faculty and fellow Meyer
Levin students filled the auditorium to capacity for more
than two
hours of entertainment put on by talented youngsters and
teens in the form of skits, song, dance and poetry, with the
steel orchestra providing full musical accompaniment for the
vocalists. As he had done
at the Winter concert, Principal Edward Gentile would also
join the cast once again and serenade the audience with
Frank Sinatra's classic My Way, with the full backing
of the steel
orchestra.

Gillett Square, Bradbury Street, Dalston, East London on the 10th June
2007. The event was held between 1.00 -6.00 p.m. with free entry. The

within the Mayor of London's 100 public spaces programme. The site was
formally launched on 10th November 2006 by the Mayor of London, Ken
Livingstone. Gillett Square is in close proximity to Kingsland High
Street and provides both relief from the excessive pedestrian footfall
on the main street and a flexible arena for cultural activity.

Steelpan Jazz Concert at the House of Jazz at Lincoln Center |

New York
- Clearly, the place to be and
seen
this weekend
if you are remotely connected with steelpan
music is at the House of Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Abstract Entertainment's sold-out Steelpan Jazz Concert will
be in full effect. If you are a savvy visitor in
town for any prestigious Caribbean-related event, then the crown jewel
on your list of activities would have been this pan jazz show.
It is the annual gala where the steelpan music elite and
fraternity gather, interact, converse and renew old
acquaintances
and forge new associations. Some of the greatest
steelpan musicians on the planet will be there - not to
mention the steelpan honored historical giants and
pioneers. It is the event at where all the upper
management of steelband originations (residents, captains,
arrangers) and key personnel and decision makers are found.
Educators, students, historians and the most discerning
connoisseurs of steelpan will be there, hanging on to every
music note played while simultaneously savoring the great
moments for future story telling that will last for the
ages.

Invader Steel Orchestra Reaches Out to Cultural
Minister |
|
Port
of Spain, Trinidad - Caribbean Airlines
Invaders Steel Orchestra participated in this year’s We Beat
parade in St James over the weekend.
As a further cry for help to the Trinidad &
Tobago Government, the band displayed a prominent banner,
which stated “ Madam Minister! We nah have a home, when de
mornin’ come.” Invaders’ plea was echoed in their tune of
choice “Nah goin’ home” by Biggie Irie as they performed
for the Minister of Culture, Joan Yuille-Williams who was
one of the VIP guest at the Amphitheatre.
Invaders Steel Orchestra’s fervent appearance at the We Beat
festival was evidence of a band whose development,
sustainability and contribution throughout their 67 years of
existence is deserving of strong support by the Government
for their plea to secure a permanent “home.” |

Use
music to fight crime |
|
Michael Murrel, a retired teacher, believes music can help
young people stay away from crime. |
|
Trinidad - “Studies
have shown that children who study music at an early
age excel more in their academic fields much more
than their peers. It is a matter of discipline and
the outlet for creativity which really work.
That discipline developed from playing music is
transferred to every facet of life and crime is
naturally eliminated,” he said.
Murrel, a former teacher of Barataria Junior
Secondary School, joined the teaching service in
1966. He is a graduate of the Mausica.
Teachers Training College and the Caribbean Union
College, now the University of the Southern
Caribbean where he successfully read for a
Bachelor’s degree in Education. Murrel taught
Agricultural Science but holds a diploma in
Automotive and Diesel Mechanics from the National
Technical Schools in California.
Murrel is an accomplished musician, he favours the
steelpan. He is a director, arranger and pannist
with the Marionatta steel orchestra.

We first met the youngsters of the Danny Kaye PS

is done, as they took their turn behind their instruments as

- Brian McAlpin likes to move to the rhythm
of the steel drums. After hearing the instrument at
Discovery Cove in Orlando, Fla., he was so inspired
that he decided to learn to play the drums himself.
"My favorite thing about the steel drums is how
they sound," says the 14-year-old from Arbutus, Md.
"It reminds me of tropical islands."
Brian, who already plays the trumpet in the
