Bradley's Triumphant NY Return
&
the Birth of Pantonic Steel Orchestra |
|
|
In
1998 a committed group of very young, very talented,
very driven, extremely confident but yet unrecognized
and relatively unknown steelpan players, came into the consciousness of
the New York
steelband community, as they took third place in the annual
New York steelband music panorama. That group would
soon be known to everyone as Pantonic, and over the next few
years would etch it's name permanently in the annals of world steelband music
history.

Branches Steel Orchestra in the Spotlight |
|
|
Branches Steel
Orchestra was
fortunate to be chosen as the "House Band" for the
January 4th Inaugural Ball of the newly-elected
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. History was made with
Governor Patrick - who is the second black Governor
elected in the United States, and the first elected in the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts. Branches members feel that
the
Steel Pan, the only acoustic instrument invented in
the 20th century, also made history, being played for
the first time at an Inaugural Ball of a US
government official. The crowd of over ten
thousand who attended the ball heard Branches as
they entered the great hall. A wonderful time was
had by all and the Branches members were happy and
proud to represent the people of Trinidad by
showcasing these wonderful instruments and the West
Indies in general. The 24 members who played for
the Inaugural Ball were a fraction of the Orchestra.

Pan Rebels Steel
Orchestra -
A New York Original |
|
|
In the
late 80's a group of young, innovative, progressive,
talented and rebellious steelpan musicians known as Pan
Rebels left their mark on New York pan as no other has.
In many respects
Pan Rebels' birth signaled the dawning of the new and
current age in the New York pan music continuum. Pan In New
York was going to become primarily a youth movement. New
ideas, interest and people would become critical components
of the New York pan scene. And Pan Rebels was always at the
forefront - trying new things although they are not
always the ones who received the credit when it became
popular. It is not surprising that Pan Rebels started the
now-famous New York J'Ouvert celebrations.

Miami University Steel Band
and the Eastern Kentucky
University Steel Band
Combine for Concert |
|
|
On Saturday, March 31, the Miami University Steel Band and the Eastern Kentucky University Steel Band will present a joint concert at Hall Auditorium, on the Oxford campus of Miami University. The two bands, uniting for the first time, will perform a diversity of musical styles, with a focus on original music for steel band.
MU Steel Band director Chris Tanner will offer several original compositions, including Emerald Isle (a beguine), and Work It loose, a 12-bar blues featuring a horn section of two trumpets, alto sax, and tenor sax. The bands will also perform EKU director Jason Koontz's arrangement of Gershwin's Summertime, performed as a mambo. Compositions by Ray Holman, Tom Miller, Jeff Narell, and others round out the set.
The culmination of the evening will be a performance of Len "Boogsie" Sharpe's seminal composition for Panorama, Fire Down Below. The combined MU and EKU bands will feature approximately 40 sets of pans -- certainly not enough to match the power of a Trinidadian large-class competition band, but nonetheless one of the largest steel band ensembles to be heard in Southwest Ohio.
This performance will be repeated at Eastern Kentucky University on Tuesday, April 3, at 8:00 P.M., in Brock Auditorium.

Desperadoes
in Performance
Classic Music Video
Spotlight |
|
|
In February of 2004 WST broke bread with one of our esteemed members of the When Steel Talks global steelband family, the legendary Desperadoes Steel Orchestra. Hailing from Laventille, Trinidad - Desperadoes invited WST to capture one of their final panyard performances as their group of one hundred and twenty players - practiced before taking the stage for that year's steelband music panorama competition. The tune is 'Whap! Cocoyea' - the arranger is the late great Clive Bradley. Enjoy this classic performance.

One
Million Dollars (US) for
New York
Panorama Winner
New
York - And why not?
When Steel Talks
has
previously called for that first prize and much
more for New York's pannists in competition.
New York is, after all, the entertainment, media
and financial capital of the world. The
Big Apple always sees itself as a global
artistic and cultural leader. And as
quietly as it's kept, the steel orchestras of
New York have been spear-heading and carrying
the flame for the most vibrant, inventive,
creative and socially significant music
performing arts-based movement in the USA.
The challenge in 2007 is for the managements of
the New York steel orchestras to get their act
together, and secure not only competent
leadership, but also an able and progressive
producer/promoter who can deliver the goods and
take advantage of the vast talent the young
people possess, in a time when NY is culturally
and financially flourishing.

All Female Steelpan Ensemble
A "First"
in Botswana's History
Botswana
-
Friday
23rd February, 2007 will long be remembered in
the lives of 14 new students of Rainbow High
School in Gaborone, Botswana.
The group
made history by performing before their peers in
the school's weekly assembly. They did this
after only six weeks - following their registering
for steelpan music as an extra-curricular
activity. All but two of the budding pannists had
played the traditional marimbas at primary
school level.

Panyard DVD
2005 Available
New York
- 2005 was a year marked by historic highs and tragic lows for the
Pan community. On panorama night, the late great Clive Bradley
made history by achieving a feat never before accomplished. The
bands for which he arranged placed first and second. Sadly, the
joy would later turn to grief with the tragic news of his passing
less than three months later.
