When Steel Talks
The Demise of
Calypso
My ten year old daughter is
just about to start High
School and in a recent
conversation with her I
attempted to find out where
her interests lie. Well to
my surprise young Miss
Mitchell informed me that
not only does she enjoy
being on stage but she is
most interested in singing
calypso. While my initial
response was to scream No!
my paternal instincts took
over and I pledged to
support her in any of her
future endeavors, calypso
included.
I then questioned myself as
to why did panic set in when
my daughter expressed her
interest in calypso. That
thought led me to thinking
about calypso and its
future.
Since 1914 when the first
calypso recording was made,
to the birth of calypso
tents in the 1920s, to the
success of Atilla the Hun,
Lord Invader and the Roaring
Lion in the 1930s, to the
1956 success of Harry
Belafonte, calypso has
always been poised for
global commercial success.
Unfortunately, that kind of
success never materialized
and when the world focused
on the Caribbean for its
music it was reggae that
became a commercial
sensation.

household names and required listening among steelband
music educational organizations, including collegiate,
high school and other institutions of learning.

Sonatas is the Toast of the Town
New York
- Now that
the dust has settled and the massive steel orchestras of summer in
the Big Apple have retired for another year, let's take a
closer look at this year's panorama champion, Sonatas Steel
Orchestra.
Sonatas is a world-class steel orchestra in addition to being a class act.
The current New York steelband music panorama champions are the
toast of the North American steelband community. Anyone
who doubts the musical capability of this orchestra is in for
a big surprise, or worse - about to get their feelings hurt.
Sonatas did not simply win
the 2007 panorama.
They out-worked,
out-performed and distanced
themselves from a field of
competitors consisting of
some of the best steel
orchestras in North America.
Unless the competition wakes
up and change their work
habits - Sonatas could be
dominating the New York
steelband music scene for
some time to come .

Despers Say "Enough is Enough"
Steelbands and Panmen must be in charge
of their own destiny
New
York - In an exclusive interview with
When Steel
Talks, an unwavering
president of Despers USA Steel
Orchestra, Verne Rosemin, terms this year's panorama
results a "wake-up call" that calls into question the
rewards and benefits of participating in the West
Indian American Day Carnival Association's (WIADCA)
annual New York steelband music panorama.
Mr. Rosemin goes on to say in a scathing rebuke of
WIADCA, that given the type of investment the New
York steel orchestras and supporting music
organizations put out every year in terms of time and finances,
the pan community deserves far better. And of most
concern to him is that the pan community is in turn failing
the youth by allowing their efforts to be
exploited and their development and future stunted
as a result of the disrespect and contempt meted out
to them on an annual basis by WIADCA.

Harmony Steel Orchestra makes recordings series debut
Pan in New York - the
Panyard Recordings
New
York - Every year at the
end of the New York Steelband Summer season, steelpan music fans,
enthusiasts and music educators can look forward to stellar
quality recordings of the steel orchestras as they feverishly prepared for the annual New York steelband music panorama
competition. This year is no exception, as the 2007
offering is just as awesome as the preceding editions of this
celebrated annual music series. These recordings are both for
the uninitiated in the steelband music experience, and the veteran
critical steelband music connoisseurs, as they afford the listener
unparalleled fidelity and realism, and capture the sprit and ambience of
the steel orchestra in the urban pan yard. Moreover, you
get to experience the music the way the music arrangers and
players perform it, hear it themselves, and - how they want the audience to
experience it.

New York
- Thousands of steelband music fans and
performers descend on the New York City
Brooklyn Museum grounds each year to

Champion'. Attendance has been
estimated to have been as large as
30,000 in the past (as was reported by
the New York Times for the 2001 USSA edition
of the event). The current event
producer and promoter is the West Indian
American Day Carnival Association
(WIACDA) who also oversees the annual New
York Labor Day carnival festivities.

New York Steelbands - 2007 Panorama and
Beyond
- Grades A-Z
An in depth analysis of one the
greatest annual performances of tuned percussionists in North
America
New
York -
Wow! Another New York steelband season has passed. All in all it
was a very good season depending on your perspective. Most of the
New York steelbands made it out for the Summer season. And as we all
know that is no small feat. Every year it is becoming
increasingly difficult for steelbands to survive in the Big Apple. Indeed,
every year bands seem to have different zip codes for their pan yards.
Real estate is currently at a premium in the New York area.
The
challenges facing any steelpan performance organization in this city is
tremendous and constantly in a state of flux. Yet in spite of this
the bands came out in force. The steelband movement is very strong
in New York in spite of environmentally unfriendly confines. Most of the bands with a few exceptions
actually got larger this season. Nearly all of the bands with one exception
fell between the 70 to 100 players range. Some of the bands could
easily go past the 100 player limit if there were no restriction.
The management of New York steel orchestras have to be congratulated for their untold
sacrifices to make this happen. Most of the bands participated in the
band launches, J'Ouvert and/or Panorama.

Las Lap 'Rhythm

Pan Music in the Park Hits
Special Chord
with New Yorkers
New
York -
Literally just one week after one of the most
fierce musical competitions in North America, the steelpan music
community and its fans came together for the more serene annual
Las Lap 'Rhythm
and Steel in Prospect Park.' In three years the program has
established itself as the place to be, and hear great pan music, in
addition to winding down from the intense rigors of the all-encompassing
New
York steelband panorama season.
The event's popularity has now made it an automatic entry in the calendar
of New Yorkers looking to take in one last major round of steelpan
music performances before Summer's end. It was a virtual
"who's who" of New York's steelband community in the crowd, as the
past weeks of intense competitive atmosphere was replaced by a deep
sense of kinship. In addition to the presence of the
normal contingent of steelpan enthusiasts, there was a constant
stream of Prospect Park visitors who stopped and took in
portions of the free show on this late Summer afternoon.
They were obviously pleased, given their enthusiastic cheers and
applause. Many of the Brooklyn park-goers who were of all
races and backgrounds, some still on their bikes, paused to take
in part of the show. Others pulled up their chairs and blankets to
secure the most advantageous viewing position.

York steelband panorama was again a grand event, with much
passion, pageantry, talent and love for the steelpan art form
delivered by both performers and fans. Approximately one
thousand musicians in eleven steelbands took the stage to
perform in the annual steelband music competition at the
Brooklyn Museum. Thousands of dedicated fans descended on

to have more of everything as they easily won the 2007 crown.

New
York J'Ouvert is it!
New York
-
The Big Apple has one of the best J'Ouvert celebrations in the
world. Sandwiched between lots of powder, mud,
social commentary and
music it is second to none. And this year's 2007
version was particularly vibrant and joyful. There
was something special in the air as folks were engaged
in mass fun. The happy index soared beyond belief.
The steelbands and Ole Mas were in rare form. The
thousands of revelers were up from the wee hours of the
morning and did not stop singing, dancing and jumping
until they were pulled of the road at 10:00 am.

Sonatas
takes New York Crown
for 2007 Steelband Panorama
New York
-
The mighty Sonatas took the coveted title as "Panorama
Champions" of New York for 2007. With an
overwhelming and memorable performance, Sonatas beat the
defending champions, CASYM by a convincing score of 451
to 430 respectively. Their tune of choice was Pan
Lamentation by DeFosto. It was a blowout.
This was a very
good panorama. New York pan is alive and vibrant.
All the bands played well and looked great. Of the
eleven participating bands, their numbers in terms of
players were either at the 100-player limit, or - larger
than they were last year, with two exceptions. This
speaks volumes for the state of pan in New York.

joy would later turn to grief with the tragic news of his passing
