The most recent CD from Ralph MacDonald is “Mixty
Motions.” It’s the masterful Ralph MacDonald
surrounded by fantastic musicians as well as
two new performances by the great duo, Ashford
and Simpson. As with previous Ralph MacDonald
releases, steelpan instruments played by Robert
Greenidge maintain a prominent role in defining
the attitude of the CD.

Panorama Redemption
Trinidad, W.I.
- After sheltering his music for quite
a number of years, 58-year-old Jason “Peanut” Isaac is now
releasing songs that are finding great favour with ten-times
National Panorama Champions, Witco Desperadoes.
He told Newsday: “I think I struck a chord with Despers
because I think maybe they like what they hear. I felt good
when they picked my song last year and it is amazing to see
what is happening. Everything is falling into place.
“It’s a love thing with the people around and I’m feeling
good in my heart because I want to give the people something
different where they can say ‘this is what I like’. It is a
pleasure to see that Desperadoes has chosen my song for a
second time around.”

Pace quickens for Panorama
Trinidad, W.I.
- The pace is quickening for Panorama
2k9. Right now horses are “bunching” as we drift towards the
Savannah Party, (Panorama semifinals) just one week away. My
spies tell me that it will be a fight to the finish with the
big bands. Petrotrin Siparia Deltones has stepped up into
the big league, and will further enhance the southern
challenge. Remember, south bands have not won a Panorama
since 1975.
Bptt Renegades is sounding sweet with Dr Jit. Neal and Massy
Trinidad All Stars is shaping nicely with Pan Rivalry. Witco
Desperadoes looks threatening with Pan redemption. Despers
needs to redeem itself, having not won a Panorama for almost
ten years. What a shame for a big band! Next week my spies
will infiltrate other pan camps and bring you updated
reports.

Action filed over 'unbearable' noise
at
Fonclaire panyard
Trinidad, W.I.
- The National Lotteries Control Board (NLCB) Fonclaire Steel Orchestra is at risk of being unable to complete preparations for this year's steelband competitions.
An application for an injunction has been filed in the San Fernando High Court to stop the band's operation at its current location, which it has been occupying since June 1965.
Rookman Mahadeo, who lives next to the panyard on Dottin Street, San Fernando, filed a nuisance writ earlier this month to have the steel orchestra stop its operations.

were not judged but instead performed their Panorama
selections during which a head count was carried out by Pan

All large bands skip pan
prelims
Trinidad, W.I.
- All 16 large conventional steelbands
registered to participate in the 2009 National Panorama
Championship have automatically moved through to the
semi-final round, Pan Trinbago president, Patrick Arnold,
confirmed yesterday.
Arnold explained that since there are only 16 bands it makes
more sense to take them through rather than make the bands
face judges for a preliminary in which all of the bands
would have made it through to the next round anyway.

‘Magic Drum’ by Machel Montano & Len
“Boogsie” Sharpe is here!’
The 2008 Trinidad & Tobago
Panorama Champions, Phase II Pan Groove, are on track once
more for 2009, with another great composition by their
legendary arranger/composer - Len “Boogsie” Sharpe, called
Magic Drum.
It is a collaboration
between Sharpe and soca star Machel Montano. The steelpan
community is buzzing with anticipation as Montano represents
one of the more popular Caribbean performers today. The
potential to put a ‘pan song’ back into the popular musical
forum is intriguing.

In an era where falling out of touch with even
basic new technologies can render you obsolete in a flash, the
steelpan music community is in step with, and at the forefront of,
social networking technologies. Many players, fans and
groups in the steelpan music arena have already ‘signed on.’
It is no secret that the masterful use of new,
and ever-evolving internet tools and technology played a critical role in the successful campaign
of United States President Barack Obama. A vital
component of this new technology strategy was the implementation
by the Obama campaign team, of the online social network Facebook. Similarly,
the steelpan music cultural and educational organization, When Steel

advantages of similar technologies like
Ning to
disseminate information, showcase and bring the steelband music community it serves
globally together on the internet.

Red light flashing
for Panorama
2009
Trinidad, W.I.
-
The horses are at the gates for Panorama
2009. The red light is flashing, and pretty soon the biggest
festival in the Carnival mix will be on its way. My spy
network, better than the CIA, Mossad, MI5, and KGB, has been
fully activated. Reports are filtering back to base at an
alarming rate. Veteran arranger Earl Brooks will be at
Casablanca and South pannist Darren Shepherd goes to
Gonzales Sheikers. I’ve already said Leon “Smooth” Edwards
will add his magic touch to Solo Pan Knights (I hope they
don’t sound like Neal & Massy Trinidad All Stars). Brian
“Bean” Griffith will handle arranging duties at Hilarks and
Our Boys in Tobago.

-Steel band costumes steal
the show in Trinidad and Tobago and their designer, local
Russell Charter is recognized as a festival favourite for
his contribution. “It was very special,” were the words
Russell Charter used to describe the moment he was presented
with a Historic Award. Charter produces costumes for the
Silver Stars Steel Orchestra band in Trinidad and Tobago who
won “Band of the Year” in 2008.
“It was the first steel band in history to win the band of
the year award,” beams Charter. The “Band of the Year” award
is presented to the band in the Trinidad and Tobago carnival
that is voted the best overall in the entire annual
event. “No steel band has ever had the privilege to do this
before,” says Charter. The Trinidad and Tobago carnival is
one of the largest festivals in the world and happens once a
year, according to Charter who was born in Trinidad.
The band was formed 60 years ago and since migrating to
Canada, Charter returns to his home country every year for
the large carnival. click

Invaders says thanks
Trinidad, W.I. - The management of Caribbean Airlines Invaders
Steel Orchestra hosted an Evening of Appreciation at their panyard
on Tragarete Road in Woodbrook last Thursday evening to say thanks
to sponsors, corporate partners and the media for their support.
Events Coordinator for CAL Invaders, Liz Namsoo, told the gathering
that the steelband has enjoyed the comfort of sponsorship since the
1960s, which started with Shell Oil Company Trintoc, then Petrotrin,
BWIA and today Caribbean Airlines Limited. However, it is their
mission to become self-sufficient and in an effort to do so the band
has engaged in a number of fundraising activities throughout the
year which they feel is the key to their success and survival.

At the launch of the CD collection also entitled True
True Story, which took place at the National Library

off recording the song, but it continuously haunted him

Memorable Moments in MOP’s
Five-A-Side Steelband Competition
Antigua
& Barbuda, W.I. - The ‘Five-A-Side’ competition - a
favorite element of the annual Moods of Pan (MOP) steelband
festival - did not field in 2008 the plethora of
participants as in the past. But the crowd on hand
(pictured) undeniably had a very full evening of great music
and overall entertainment dished out not only by the
eventual two Five-A-Side competitors, Musical Youth and
Golden Hands, but also the invited artistes.
Moods of Pan is hosted by one of Antigua & Barbuda’s most
noted music organizations, Gemonites Steel Orchestra. The
organizers had received a commitment from as many as nine
groups, each featuring five steelband musicians eagerly
vying for bragging rights in the second of the three nights’
events, within the simultaneously humorous and musical
atmosphere that was the Five-A-Side competition.

“...as leaders and so on, we ought to be
identifying with the art form and to give it as much
encouragement and exposure as possible, so that it can grow

$20M for pannists
Trinidad, W.I.
- Pan Trinbago has received an allocation of more than $20 million
for the 2009 Carnival season, according to Pan Trinbago president
Patrick Arnold.
Arnold said while this year’s total allocation to the National
Carnival Commission (NCC) from the Ministry of Culture for Carnival
has been increased to $120 million, the allocation for Pan Trinbago
remained the same.
“Every year before the end of April we are supposed to submit
budgets,” Arnold explained in a telephone interview yesterday. “We
did not ask for any increases for the prizes, so the total amount we
have been allocated is almost the same as last year.” He estimated
the allocation to be more than $20 million, which is to include $11
million in prize money, appearance fees for steelbands, and players’
remittances.
