The
Bradley Years represent the definitive
collection of steelband music arrangements
and performances for a large steel
orchestra. This collection showcases seven
classic arrangements from the master
arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley is
considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the
world, New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra.
Clive Bradley had a very special
relationship with Pantonic. This orchestra
clinched the title of panorama champions
five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days
before, and in one instance, mere moments
before they took the stage for the
prestigious annual steelband music panorama
competition.
The
recordings capture, reproduce and present an
unrivalled clarity with sonic realism, of a
large steel orchestra fielding between one
hundred and one hundred twenty musicians -
unlike any other steelband music recordings
in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling
addition for all fans, educators, players,
historians and fine music collectors.

2009 - Technology Once Again
the Great Equalizer For the
Steelband Artform and Everyone
New
York, NY - The 2009 PhotoPlus International
Conference and Expo at New York’s Jacob Javits Center saw over 250 companies
showcasing products and new technologies that are directly related to the global
steelpan music industry being able to successfully sustain and market itself in
an environment that is always competing for people’s attention. One pays dearly
for not knowing, or not staying abreast of technological evolution. Being able
to capture and retain the public’s attention, or at least being in the running
to accomplish such - demands that any musical organization or community i.e.
steel orchestras and respective associations, operate on par with other industry
professionals. And a critical component in this is - technology. click for

North Paddington
community centre fined Late night
steelband practice blamed
England, UK
- A community centre which made life unbearable
for North Paddington residents with bands playing steel drums late at night has
been fined.
A number of complaints were made about the Yaa
Asantewa Arts Centre, in Chippenham Mews, including some neighbours who said the
steel band practice was so loud they could not even talk in their own homes.
Those living right next door bore the full brunt
of several steel drums playing in unison.
Some residents also complained about the noise
caused from social events at the centre, which could sometimes be heard until
the early hours of the morning. click for

Semi-Final Line
up set for Southern Marines Steelband
Foundation’s 9th Annual
Talent Expression
Trinidad & Tobago, WI- The preliminary round of the ninth edition of the Talent
Expression competition organised by the Southern Marines Steelband Foundation
and held Saturday 24th October at the Southern Marines Pan Palais,
Marabella was of such a high standard that all twenty-six contestants -
including technically superb panist Opal Murrel - have been included in the semi
finals to be held at the same venue on Saturday 7th November.
Twelve finalists will be chosen, then, to contest the finals on Saturday 21st
November.
Leading the race into the semi-finals is veteran calypsonian
James “Durango” Samuels followed closely by jazz singer Kerlene Joseph and pop
vocalist Marsha Cagan. But the smart money knows that there is many a slip
between the cup and the lip and that early form does not necessarily reveal
eventual winners. Much attention is being paid to the fortunes of dramatist
Gregory Sherwood, dynamic ten-year old soca star Ferdinand Smith and panist Opal
Murrel. click for

ACB supports
schools’ steelband competition
Antigua
& Barbuda, WI - The Schools'
Independence Steelband Competition has received a major boost. This was made
possible by a donation from Antigua Commercial Bank (ACB) to the organisers of
the event.
ACB has come onboard as the official sponsor of all the prizes for the
competition.
In a presentation ceremony yesterday, the bank’s Marketing and Public Relations
Executive Shawn Nicholas noted that ACB strongly supports the pan movement in
Antigua and Barbuda.
For this reason, the bank has become the official title sponsor for Panorama.
Nicholas said the bank believes that attention has to be given to the young and
upcoming pan players to ensure a bright future for the National Panorama
Competition. click for

Laventille pannist

in New York
Port-of-Spain,
Trinidad- From the rough and tumble, often times dangerous world of the inner
city, a talent frequently emerges with universal appeal. It’s no different,
whether that place is Brownsville, Brooklyn or Success Village, Laventille. It
is the latter where Ricardo Jerome first honed his musical skills. Ricardo’s
impressive musical appeal and commercial success in New York was not handed to
him. “Back home was really hard. I had to make a move…I had to get out,” he
recalls, referring to life in Laventille. But life in Brooklyn was equally
challenging. “I worked odd jobs to make it until I started teaching pan on a
part-time basis in schools.” This was his big break, for through this programme
he regularised his immigration status and really began concentrating on his
God-given musical talents. click for

Printers ‘talk loud’
and say something Two ‘Scaredy
Cats’ Run for cover,
while Five Step up to the plate
New
York, NY - Ever wonder what happens
when you take the product presenters out of their comfort zone and eliminate
their prepared script? Will they let their product do the talking? Or will they
bow out, run and hide? When Steel Talks (WST) put seven highly-respected
manufacturers of printers in that exact position. The companies that did
participate all fared remarkably well. If they were queasy, scared or even
apprehensive they never let on. To their credit, the over-riding attitude was
“bring it on!”
Quality prints are critical to the visual telling of the story
and documentation of any culture when hard copy is utilized. Beyond the obvious
individual albums and collections by enthusiasts of steelpan music happenings,
and by the curious - quality photo prints are key to the marketing of any
culture. Every panyard and/or practice facility in the world is a library,
museum and art gallery. It is simply a matter of perspective and how we view
these spaces where monumental genius work has accrued and continues to birth. It
is imperative that every organization carry and display its history with them
through images at all times. click for

Indeed, the
tens of thousands of people who are part of our global WST network on Facebook,

high quality images, photos that tell a story about the art form, its
practitioners/ musicians and fans.
We, When

known globally for state-of-the-art recordings, video, and audio production and
news coverage. Photos bring text to life - just as the key to a superior video
is superior audio. Without those great, eagerly-anticipated images from our WST pan-photographers our articles would be - well - simply a grouping of characters on a screen
enrapturing readers, but still leaving much to their imagination - and awaiting
that final touch - photographs - to be truly brought to life. click for

Ebony Steelband
Celebrating 40 Years
England,
UK - Ebony’s historical journey
began in a humble setting of a chilly autumn of 1969 in Acton, London by Cape
James and Winston ‘P’ Joseph. Cape inherited the steel pans from The
Relatives Steelband when John Justalyn, a founder of the band passed away.
A garden shed at Cape’s home became Ebony’s first
panyard with its original members: Winston ‘P’ Joseph, Leeford Sylvester, Hugh
and Wendell Hargreaves and Cape James. The band comprised of a single cello pan,
a set of 4-pan bass, one tenor pan and a double tenor pan.
James proceeded to register the band as the Ebonites Steelband
but soon discovered that the name had already been registered and with good
intentions, registered the band, ‘Ebony Steelband’. And so the birth of Ebony
Steelband had joined a family of Caribbean culture already establishing a place
into British society. click for
