“The
Bradley Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling addition
for all fans, educators, players, historians
and fine music collectors.

Halcyon Steel Orchestra
Wins Antigua & Barbuda 2010 National Panorama
Title
Victor “Babu”
Samuel is winning arranger!
|
St.
John’s, Antigua & Barbuda, W.I.
- No one was happier last night when it
was announced that Halcyon Steel Orchestra had
won the Antigua & Barbuda 2010 National Panorama
competition, than the Prime Minister of Antigua
& Barbuda, the Honorable Baldwin Spencer. It is
well known throughout the Caribbean that Prime
Minister Spencer is an ardent supporter of the
steelpan music genre and steelband performing
arts. Moreover, Halcyon is the band that will
always be dear to him because of his close
association with the music organization.
....Five steel orchestras competed for Antigua
and Barbuda’s 2010 National Panorama
Championship title at Carnival City in the
country’s capital of St. John’s. The

It’s pan tonight
|
St. John’s, Antigua &
Barbuda, W.I. - Once again it’s time for the gathering.
The time when panists in Antigua & Barbuda
congregate, sticks raised in anger, to crown a
champion.
This year, Cool & Smooth Ebonites Steel
Orchestra will be band number one. Ebonites are
now in the middle of a purple patch that has
seen them surge to positions near the top of the
standings as recently as 2008 when they did
Short Shirt’s J’Ouvert Rhythm.
They are sticking with the arranging talents of
Aubrey “Lacu” Samuel and this year their tune of
choice is Swallow’s St John’s Tung Mash Dung.
Always considered an underdog, it is felt that
if Ebonites can overcome the indiscipline that
sometimes characterises the execution of their
piece, they can do a lot of damage on Panorama
night.
They have been steadily growing their numbers
over the years and therefore power should not be
a problem.

The e-pan takes the steelpan
high-tech
|
Ontario,
Canada - It's much lighter and easier to
move around on stage than the traditional steelpan
and it was created using high-tech electronics to
advance the invention of the only acoustic instrument
in the 20th Century.
Welcome to the e-pan
that could, for the first time ever, make waves

parade.
Inventor Salmon
Cupid says at least two bands have shown an interest
in using the new stand-alone technologically advanced
instrument that he spent the past 25 years developing
to perfection.

Angel Harps Steel Orchestra from Grenada - much
to the surprise of Angel Harps’ management - who
told WST that Grenada’s Angel Harps will not be

Theatre kids Tay Lay Lay
with Kitch
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - The Grand Master will be
remembered and reinterpreted by participants of
Queen’s Hall Theatre Camp 2010 at Tay Lay Lay with
Kitch, a full-fledged production today, from 5 pm,
at Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s. For three weeks, since
July 5, 80 children between the ages of seven and
13 have been tutored in the disciplines of steelpan,
drama, design, dance, voice and, for the first time,
yoga—all while being exposed to the works, life
and genius of Aldwyn Roberts, The Lord Kitchener.
The theatre camp
has been staged without interruption since its inception
in 1986 and continues to be the flag-bearer of the
Hall’s community outreach programme. Conceived 24
years ago by the Patrons of Queen’s Hall as a tool
to develop greater cultural awareness and skill
among young people, the camp has evolved into an
in-demand, solid arts programme. Its culminating
concert has traditionally offered students an opportunity
to showcase their artistic discovery. “We saw it
as a way to foster love and respect for the performing
arts and to groom an audience,” explained Margaret
Walcott, the camp’s coordinator.

All change at North Paddington
arts centre
|
London,
England - Although little more than a building
site at the moment, a shining new revamped arts
and community centre is on the way to a North Paddington
back street.
....The artists
from Ebony Steel Band, the Association of British
Calypsonians and the Yaa Asantewaa carnival groups
required more space and better facilities to make
costumes, practice steel pan drumming and learn
their dance moves in the run-up to the annual Notting
Hill Carnival.
Set behind a row
of houses, neighbours also began complaining to
Westminster Council about the "unbearable" noise
made by steel bands playing at the Yaa.
So loud were the
drums, the residents said they could not even hear
themselves talking in their own homes.

Toronto,
Canada - As a young drummer fine tuning his

“I didn’t know how

One of the things
Cupid realized growing up was it was difficult for

Sweet steel on the sand
|
Barbados,
W.I. - “The Whole Place Mash Up”, the popular
tune by Soca Kartel duo Mikey and Blood, was a fitting
one for the 50-piece steel orchestra “Mosaic” who
flattened the BS&T Pan Pun De Sand with their thunderous
and festive soundyesterday at Brandons Beach. They
were one of the seven steel bands who brought joy
to the thousands who came out for the event.
Organisers, the
National Cultural Foundation, are calling the event
a success, noting that their innovations this year
– which included a new orientation to fit the crowd
comfortably – had paid off.

BS&T Pan Pun De Sand
|
Barbados,
W.I. - This was a Sunday to remember! In
spite of the sweltering heat, thousands poured on
to Brandon’s Beach for the annual BS&T Pan Pun de
Sand. Armed with coolers, picnic baskets, folding
chairs and umbrellas they took their positions,
some strategically beneath shaded areas, careful
to avoid the sun, others donned sun tan lotion and
determined to stick it out with the help of the
delicious melodies served by the pan Dons and Divas.
And the menu was
flavourfully varied; Rock and Roll, Folk, Ballads,
Reggae and of course Calypso. The crowd swayed gently
like palm trees limbs in the gentle breeze of the
trade winds, as first Eastland All Stars, then Pan
Batuque and Olakunde played their repertoire which
was politely received. But it was with the announcement
of LH Pan Groove that the cloaks of politeness were
thrown off. The pan around the neck group from T&T
navigated through the thick crowd creating a stir
that suddenly saw the passive transformed into hypnotised
subjects, dancing in a congaline.

Steelpan Great Francis “Patsy”
Haynes Remembered
|
Global
- October 29 (editor’s
note this article was originally published in 1987)
will mark two years since we bade farewell
to Francis “Patsy” Haynes — a name of which a lot
more of us should have been more keenly aware. A
lot more of us should have known of his exploits.
That Patsy Haynes continued to ply his musical trade
right up, practically, to the time of his death
in 1985, frequently in a manner not at all commensurate
with his creative potency is, if anything, a study
in indignity. Patsy Haynes was a hero.
Patsy Haynes was a genius. But he was these
things because of being, first of all, of the steel
band milieu. And there’s the rub.

Pan ‘needs more respect’
|
Barbados,
W.I. - Liking the steel pan is not the same
as respecting it, says leader of the Mosaic Steel
Orchestra David Ziggy Walcott.
Even as today’s
event, Pan Pun De Sand, staged by the National Cultural
Foundation at Brandons Beach, is expected to attract
thousands of spectators, Walcott does not believe
it is enough to pay homage to the instrument and
its culture.
“Respecting pan
means getting involved in its development, appreciating
what is happening with it. A lot of people in Barbados
would come down to Pan Pun De Sand and after that,
that’s it; nothing more until the next year,” he
complained.

Gill shares a love
of pan
|
Barbados, W.I.
- Passing on a love and knowledge of steelpan
music to the next generation.
This is the goal
of Kentley Gill, Director of Pan in the Plaza, which
is an annual three-week programme held at the Queen’s
Park Steel Shed.
Speaking with the
Barbados Advocate yesterday, he said that he would
like steel pan music to be taken to the highest
levels and he wants to pass on this art form to
the younger generation so that they can help him
do this.
One of the ways
that he hopes to accomplish this mission is through
the Pan summer programme, which he has been working
with since 2002. The programme, which is an initiative
between the Central Bank of Barbados, who provides
the financing so that the children can attend and
learn steelpan free of charge and the National Cultural
Foundation (NCF), has garnered interest and popularity
among the youth that it caters to.

Students explore music at
camp
|
Washington, USA
- Dean Celli isn’t one of those kids who
dumps their instrument into a closet come summer,
only to pick it up again when school starts. That’s
why, ever since the summer before third grade, he’s
signed up for the Edmonds School District’s Summer
Music School.
....Jane Sahabu,
a freshman at Edmonds-Woodway, is taking the Steel
Drums, Harp and Instrumental Ensemble courses at
camp. She’s been going to the camp since the summer
before seventh grade.
Sahabu, who plays
the flute and piano, said she likes her Steel Drums
and Harp labs because the instruments are different
and fun to play.
“It was really fun
learning how to play the steel drums, because you
need to learn where the notes are on the drum,”
she said. “It’s fun because it’s a different kind
of instrument for me, because I don’t play any other
percussion.”
Celli, a seventh
grader at Meadowdale Middle School, started going
to the camp when he was just learning to play the
trumpet. He’s now taking Steel Drums, Jazz I and
Piano at camp.
He said he likes
knowing that he can play the steel drums and piano
in addition to his trumpet, but that playing the
trumpet in Jazz I is his favorite.

Pan Pun De Sand –Oh What
A Feeling!
|
Barbados,
W.I. - Mr. Anthony King, Chief Executive
Officer of Barbados Shipping and Trading, says that
his company is heartened by the response of the
public over the years, to the popular Pan Pun de
Sand. Noting that it is not simply an adult event,
the CEO pointed to the huge number of family members
who came to Brandon’s Beach for the atmosphere and
entertainment.
‘BS&T is a member
of the Neal and Massy Group which sponsors the world
acclaimed Neal and Massy Trinidad All Stars and
our involvement in Pan Pun de Sand shows that the
commitment to steel pan music extends across the
region. This event will host bands from Trinidad,
Antigua and Grenada. I am pleased and consider it
an accomplishment that the largest group of players
will represent Mosaic, which is the group from Barbados
led by David ‘Ziggy’ Walcott.’

3.
Billed Junior Champions
in Steel, the event, now in its fourth year, was

Bravo! “The Pan Man” is
the real deal
|
New
York, USA - Yes, yes, yes... The musical
“The Pan Man” is the real deal. Entertaining, educational,
moving and provocative, this thought-provoking musical
drama takes the audience on an enthralling, fantastic,
authentic historical journey about the life of the
‘pan man,’ in a time and place when the steelpan
instrument and its players of this magnificent instrument
were looked down upon and severely castigated by
society.
Long before the
phrase ‘from the outhouse to the Whitehouse’ became
fashionable - the Pan Man successfully made that
arduous excursion.

Steeling a glance at Caribbean
culture
Summer camp uses steel
drums to teach students much more than music
|
Delaware,
USA - ...Come August, the Wilmington Montessori
School’s summer steel drum workshop will begin and
a classroom full of kids age 7 and up will be learning
the finer points of Caribbean clamoring.
But the shiny drums
can be used to teach more than simply the principles
of noisemaking, said instructor Atiba Fields, and
one of the first lessons students will hear is an
environmental one.
“I like to consider
steel drums examples of recycling,” said Fields.
The instruments,
first born on the Caribbean island of Trinidad in
the late 1940s, were made from discarded oil drums
left by an American naval base set up at the end
of World War II, Fields explained.

Farmers’ Market gets sounds of the Caribbean

Georgia,
USA - Four of six steel band ensemble members
shared their passion of Caribbean culture with the
local community Tuesday through a public performance
at the Milledgeville Marketplace Downtown Farmers’
Market.
Since 1999, Central
Steel Ensemble has been performing and teaching
the art of steel drum music within the Central Georgia
area.
“This is something
new for us because this is our first time in Milledgeville
with the group,” said Sam Jones, who plays lead-pan
and percussion. “We’re glad to have this opportunity.”
....The incorporation
of music and arts events into the weekly market
is a new element this year, which aims to not only
provide entertainment but also draw a larger audience
out to the event. Robbie Hattaway of Hattaway Screen
Printing endured the heat Tuesday afternoon as he

Show respect for national
instrument
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- President of Pan Trinbago Keith Diaz is
hopping mad that the steelpan, the national instrument
of T&T, is still classified as a noisy instrument
on our law books.
He is calling for
the removal of this classification. “We have to
take this off,” Diaz said. He was commenting on
last week’s High Court decision, which placed restrictions
on the hours NLCB Fonclaire could now practise.
The judgment followed complaints by of one of its
neighbours, Rookman Mahadeo, about the noise emanating
from its Fonrose and Claire Street panyard, San
Fernando. In December 2008, Mahadeo, who lives adjacent
to the panyard, brought action against Milton Wire
Austin, Fonclaire’s leader, Kenneth Jackson and
Joseph Reid, for its extended hours of play and
unruly behaviour of its players.

This business of Carnival

|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - ....In the panel discussion
on Tuesday, Dr Brian Copeland noted that steelband’s
“top-notch tutors are in the departure lounge with
their intellectual property packed in their carryons.”
But as startling and resonant as the issues regarding
the steelband were when scholars and practitioners
pounded them home, the entire room was silenced
by a remarkable story told by advertising practitioner
Peta Bain from the floor about a lost opportunity
in 2000 during the rebranding exercise of a major
foreign oil company operating in Trinidad.
According to Bain,
a project to carry steelbands to 100 countries to
perform with the native folk groups of each country
in a series of concerts worth US$70 million was
vetoed by local executives of the company for reasons
that remained unclear.

Kingston,
Jamaica, W.I. - The University of the

up on time were welcomed by Tanny Shirley, chairman
of the South east Regional Health Authority, who
applauded the efforts of the Chest Hospital to treat
diseases like pneumonia, asthma and other respiratory
illnesses.
....The first piece
of the night was a soothing, mellow number - just
right for an unsettled audience. The second performance,
Mas Que Nada, was very different. A Latin mix, the
band members were a lot more engaged with the performance
as they danced with genuine smiles on their faces.

The Show Must Go On! - Power
of the Steelpan
2010 Montreal International Steelpan Festival in
Full Review
|
Montreal,
Quebec, Canada - The words “the
show must go on” have never rung with more truth
and urgency than with this year's Montreal International
Steelpan Festival. Faced with a series of
challenges and a short runway that threatened to
curtail this year's show, event organizer Salah
Wilson pulled out all stops to ensure continuity
and that there would be a quality production at
this year's 10th edition.
....“What brings
you to Canada today?” asked the customs officer
at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport. When
Steel Talks’ response was simply - “the steelpan
music festival.” The officer nodded in acknowledgement
and said smilingly “enjoy your stay.” And so began
the When Steel Talks ‘festival log’ for the Montreal
International Steelpan Festival 2010.

Pan & Dance inspire Princes
Town 2010 Graduating Class
|
Princes
Town, Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
For the second year in a row, the SEA graduating
class of Princes Town Methodist School in south
Trinidad gave inspiring performances at their graduating
ceremony, under the guidance of pan tutor Noel Skair.
As in 2009, where the theme was ‘Keep the Dream
Alive’ - that of 2010 was just as uplifting, portrayed
on pan in the form of Yolanda Adams’ ‘Never Give
Up’ and presented by the steel ensemble.
It was simply the
tune of choice played on the country’s national
instrument (steelpan) by the Graduating Class of
2010, where only a few weeks prior, panists had
gone through the rigors of SEA (Secondary Examination
Assessment).

Pan by storm at NAPA

Trinidad

a spectacular production featuring our national
instrument, I got to meet some pretty important
people, like German Ambassador Dr Ernst Klaus Konrad

secretary Esme Rawlins-Charles; Ministry of Sports
permanent secretary Jennifer Jones; Director of
Culture Ingrid Ruben-Ryan; and, Prime Minister Best
Village Trophy Competition director Norvan Fullerton.
....Each band was
at the top of its game but I was particularly touched
by the execution of In a Monastry Garden (Neal &
Massy Trinidad All Stars); Ganges Meets the Nile
(Sagicor Exodus); Excerpt from Zampa Overture (Witco
Desperadoes); Bassman (Katzenjammers); Dance with
my father (Caribbean Airlines Invaders); Human Nature
(NLCB Fonclaire, featuring Ken “Professor” Philmore
and Jerome Bissessar); and the show’s opening, a
medley of retro vintage kaiso by St. James Tripolians.
