“The
Bradley Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling
addition for all fans, educators, players, historians
and fine music collectors.

University of Akron Steel Drum Band to play in anniversary concert: Close Up |
Ohio,
USA -Earplugs are required if you sit in on a rehearsal of the University of Akron Steel Drum Band. Not because they sound bad, but because the students make very loud music in a very crowded room.
Steel drums, also called steel pans, originated in Trinidad and surrounding Caribbean islands after World War II. The University of Akron Steel Drum band is keeping alive the tradition of making music on found instruments, said Matt Dudack, the group's artistic director.

The Silencing of Pat Bishop
- NOT! |
Global
- Earlier this month When Steel Talks began its
annual celebration and tribute to “Women in Steelpan,”
highlighting the multifaceted, multi-talented intellectual,
educator and artist Pat Bishop. This global figure
is and remains one of the pivotal figures in the
history of pan, and the country of Trinidad and
Tobago’s modern arts and culture.
So as March
- Woman’s Month - draws to a close, it is with extreme
disappointment that When Steel Talks finds itself
commenting on the unfortunate and disrespectful
turn of events visited upon at Ms Bishop as outlined
in one of Trinidad and Tobago national newspapers.
What has been
done cannot ever be undone and no apology can ever
make amends. And there lies the problem. Someone
thought they could do this and get away with it
in broad daylight - or worse they did not, and do
not - care.
Can the untalented plebe who set this action in
motion swim in one bead of sweat off of Ms. Bishop’s
brow? Most likely not. Clearly someone simply lost
their mind.
Needless to
say this is not the way we expected to wrap up Women’s
month. Ms. Bishop is more than a cultural icon -
she is a Sister in Pan. Furthermore, Ms. Bishop
speaks her mind and is not afraid to have an opinion.
Be assured
Ms. Bishop will continue to be heard.

Tribute to steelbands before
Mash 1970 |
Guyana - Steelband has
been the essence of our Caribbean Carnival/ Mash/Crop-Over
celebrations since this phenomenon emerged after
WWII, and remains a unique musical art form in the
twentieth century, with efforts from Japan to Sweden
usurping this contribution from our tropics. Like
our own Demerara rum and sugar, we need to propogate,
preserve and defend steelband in the Caribbean –
especially since our vaunted WI cricket prestige
is currently on the wane and in limbo.

Born and raised

working in the arts in Trinidad motivated him to
take on the project of creating a children’s book

Renegades impresses adjudicators
at festival opening |
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - American
music adjudicators presiding over the 29th Biennial
T&T Music Festival, taking place at venues across
the country, have put in a request with event co-ordinator
Marie-Diane Dupres to visit the panyard of BP Renegades
Steel Orchestra. It seems they still can’t get over
the impressive panmanship they heard from the nine-time
National Panorama champion at Sunday’s gala opening,
held at Queen’s Hall in St Ann’s, Port-of-Spain.
They want to know how Renegades, led by Everald
“Redman” Watson, achieved such silky presentations
of Frederic Chopin’s works when some of the world’s
leading musicians aren’t able to capture the intent
of the composer. Desmond Waithe is Renegades’ classical
director. Dr John Paul Johnson, from Wichita State
University, Dr Jan Harrington and Dr Carmen Helena
Pellez, both of Indiana University, expressed delight
over the band’s deliveries at the gala.

Joy of drumming |
Pennsylvania,
USA - Kevin Guerrieri,
an Edgeworth Elementary third-grader selected to
shake a watermelon-sized noisemaker at the center
of a steel drum storm, admitted his ears were ringing
and his arms ached with fatigue. But he wasn’t complaining.
“It felt great,”
he said. “I could see everybody dancing.”
Guerrieri
was one of more than 160 Quaker Valley School District
students who boarded a bus early Wednesday afternoon
for a steel band performance at Ambridge Area High
School. The journey carried them through ancient
Africa, across some Caribbean islands, and into
North America in the 19th and 20th centuries, and
included Calypso-flavored visits with the Nutcracker
ballet, British pop band Coldplay and Disney World.

Steel band drums up Haiti
aid |
London,
U.K. - Far from the ongoing
human tragedy in Haiti, the sweet rhythmic tinkles
of a steel band were shared with Londoners Saturday
in a bid to help the shattered Caribbean nation.
The Golden
Harps Steel Orchestra held a fundraiser to draw
attention to the ongoing need for help for Haiti
where one million of its nine million inhabitants
remain homeless. A Jan. 12 earthquake killed more
than 230,000 and reduced the impoverished nation
to rubble.
"This was
something we felt we could do," said event organizer,
Trudy den Ouden, a native of Jamaica. "We believe
it is important to keep Haiti in the news. We simply
want to help."
All members
of the band are originally from the Caribbean, including
manager and arranger Terry Greene, who is from Trinidad,
she said.
