“The
Bradley Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling addition
for all fans, educators, players, historians
and fine music collectors.

T&T Chinese steelband
delights Irish audiences
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I.
- On Monday, May 17,
the Trinidad and Tobago Chinese Steel Ensemble
had just completed two successful performances,
one on each of the previous two days, and we
were now on our way from Kingscourt, County
Cavan, driving southwest to Askeaton, County
Limerick.
We were invited to play in St
Mary’s Parish Church by Fr Senan Murray CSSp, a
Holy Ghost Father who had spent over 40 years
serving the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
....Starting a few minutes late, we were
introduced to the eagerly waiting audience by
Caroline, who gave a brief description of the
band. The band then launched into the first of
three sessions of music, separated by 10-minute
breaks, comprising Chinese, Pop and Soca tunes.

2010 Pan in the 21st
Century Final night - Steel Orchestras’ Order of
Appearance
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W. I. - At
the ‘live’ drawing for playing positions,
facilitated by Pan Trinbago Secretary Richard
Forteau, for the finals of the 2010 Pan in The
21st Century competition - Invaders
Steel Orchestra pulled playing position number
one. They will be first on stage to present what
is expected to be a card of twelve extremely
competitive performances, from some of the
country's noted steel orchestras, all vying for
the championship title and a prize purse of TT
$100,000.00 on final night.
....And, there are two highly
visible differences in the finalists as
originally announced by Pan Trinbago recently.
The previous official 2010 final lineup did not
include a Tobago steel orchestra, as apparently
neither Katzenjammers or Our Boys - the two
entrants from the sister isle - made the cut.

Nathaniel Dett Chorale -
And Still We Sing … Steel Singin’
|
Ontario,
Canada
- ‘And Still We Sing…Steel Singin,’ the final installment of The Nathaniel Dett Chorale’s 2010 Glenn Gould Studio series,
is poised to be an exciting, eclectic musical
showcase of the almost limitless collaboration
existing between steel pan and voice. The
concert, a musical kaleidoscope, will celebrate
the remarkable versatility of this classic
Afro-Caribbean instrument with repertoire
ranging in flavour from classical to calypso, to
the rich folk traditions of the Caribbean
peoples. The concert takes place at 8:00 pm on
Wednesday, May 26th and is repeated at 8:00 pm on
Saturday, May 29th .
“And Still
We Sing… Steel Singin’ is a concert that I have
wanted to program for some time now,” explains
Artistic Director/Founder, Brainerd
Blyden-Taylor. “Given it’s exquiste tonal range,
pan music is a perfect complement to the
multi-dimensional voices of the Chorale which
allows us to draw from the opposite ends of the
musical spectrum to create a electrifying
performance.”

Chinese Steelband plays in
Dublin
|
Dublin,
Ireland - The Trinidad
and Tobago Chinese Steel Ensemble (TTCSE) made its
first international appearance at St Stephen’s Green,
Dublin, Ireland. What started off as a pretty cold
day soon turned out to be a still cool, but sunny,
day as the park was bathed in bright sunshine.
The pans, which survived the
long trip from Trinidad to Ireland with no
damage, were quickly set up by the band while a
curious crowd slowly gathered to hear the band
perform. For most of them, it would be the first
time that they would be hearing the sweet sound
of steel.

Steelband Classics - Marsicans
Steel Orchestra Dead or Alive
|
Global
- 2005 was a tremendous
year for steelpan panorama music in New York. Some
of the most memorable music arrangements and performances
in the history of pan were delivered that year.
Fortunately
many of the performances were captured by Basement
Recordings that year and is available on DVD and
CD (you owe it to yourself to get a copy). Basement
Recordings is simply the best in the business of
capturing live steelpan music. Their recordings
sound even better with time.
Pelham Goddard
is one of the true greats of the Caribbean music.
In this arrangement of Dead or Alive Goddard again
distinguishes himself as on of the all time masters
of steelband panorama arrangements.

Although blind, Paul Cottom
still repairs stoves and bikes
Also sight-challenged,
but holding on to the music is steelpan bass player
& section leader Robert Weekes
|
Guyana,
S.A. - Nine years ago
Paul Cottom was a 31-year-old who was in the prime
of his life with great plans to make life better
for his family, including his young daughter, and
to make his dream come through he worked two jobs.
But his life has taken a drastic
turn because he went blind, and he is still struggling
to come to terms with the fact that his eyesight
is no more.
....For 33-year-old
Robert Weekes the situation has been a bit different
because he is not totally blind and can see to move
around.
He was born
that way, he said, and from an early age he knew
life would have been difficult for him and so he
decided to hold on to music because of his love
for the steel pan.
“I have talent
when it comes to steel pan and with that and my
public assistance I make do,” the man who is also
physically challenged said.
....His music
career began at the St Rose’s Unit for the Blind
and later he joined the Multilateral School steel
pan band and played in six national competitions.
When the National Steel Orchestra was formed in
2008 following CARIFESTA, Weekes became a member
and today he is the leader of the bass section.

Bringing The Fire!
|
Ontario,
Canada - CaneFire couldn’t
have come up with more perfect cover to capture
the essence of its brand new disc.
Pandemonium,
which also hints at the album’s explosive contents,
features the shadow of a guy jumping while going
to town on the steelpan.
Caribbean-flavoured
Latin jazz – or is it Latin-flavoured Caribbean
jazz? – is what the septet specialize in and they
do it with fire and versatility. The group’s sound
encompasses Cuban, Puerto Rican, French-Caribbean
and Trinidadian styles and, on this record, Brazilian
and Venezuelan sounds, too. But, it never sounds
clinical or messy.
....Ledbetter
says the “pan” in Pandemonium refers to the steelpan,
the lead instrument and the key to CaneFire’s sound.

GCC Chairman Committed to
Pan Competition
|
St.
George’s, Grenada, W.I.
- The chairman of the Grenada
Carnival Committee (GCC) has said that he is committed
to ensuring that the national steelbands’ competition,
Panorama, is held as part of the 2010 carnival that
will be officially launched on June 12.
Colin Dowe
gave the assurance Wednesday after the Grenada Steelbands’
Association (GSA) issued a statement announcing
that members had decided to “abstain from participating
in the 2010 National Panorama Championship’’ because
of an “ongoing impasse’’ with the GCC.
One of the
central complaints of GSA was non-payment of outstanding
prize monies of some EC$150,000 owing for such things
as the 2009 Junior and Senior Panorama competitions,
and for a steelbands’ “Bomb Tune Competition’’ of
last year.

The Arrival of Steel Drums
in Trinidad - A Pan Story
|
Global
- Charlie (Charles J.
Getz, Chief Storekeeper) was supply officer for
the US Navy on Trinidad during WWII. Here is his
contribution to the steelpan movement as told by
his daughter Ann Zimmerman.
I once attended
an Andy Narell concert in California where he thanked
the US Navy for steel drums, but I was too shy to
come back stage and tell him this family story.
Too bad--at that time Charlie was still alive and
could have given an oral history. Charlie loved
steel drum music all his life.

White Lake seniors grooving
in steel drum and rhythm band
|
Michigan,
USA - At age 89, Holly
Smith is learning what great fun banging on drums
can be. And she has plenty of company.
Smith is one
of 14 members of the Independence Village Steel
Drum and Rhythm Band, which has been meeting for
class on Fridays for the past several weeks at the
White Lake retirement community where she lives.
“I enjoy it.
It’s fun — but I don’t know if I’m hitting the right
notes,” Smith said, laughing.
Teaching the
class is Chaz Russell, his wife, son and two daughters
who make up the Gratitude Steel Band, based in Sylvan
Lake.

MAS MAN - A Dalton Narine
Film in Review
Documentary about Trinidad
& Tobago Carnival Artist Peter Minshall
|
Global
- The production “Mas
Man” is one that should be introduced and featured
at film festivals worldwide.
It chronicles
Peter Minshall, a man whose works and creativity
have been the visions which entranced international
audiences over the years, including at the 48th
annual Miss Universe pageant, and when more than
eighty percent of the world’s population was encamped
around their television sets for the full opening
ceremonies of no less than three Olympics (1992
Barcelona, 1996 Atlanta and 2002 Salt Lake City).
....Pan man,
steelpan historian and film director Dalton Narine
has done a masterful job. He is a man with the confidence,
depth of knowledge, and vastness of experiences
to adequately pull this production off.

Ian Valz, brilliant Guyanese
writer, dies
|
New
York, USA - My heart skipped
a beat then I felt a deep sadness in the pit of
my stomach after hearing that my friend, creative
genius Sir Ian Valz had died in his adopted home
of St. Martin, on April 28.
It feels like
just yesterday when I congratulated and praised
Ian at the screening of his movie, Panman, Rhythm
of the Palms, at the Lyceum Theatre, in Brooklyn.
....Set in
the Dutch Caribbean Island of St. Maartin, the film
tells the story of the rise and fall of the steel
pan player, Harry Daniel (Ian Valz).
Harry is an
icon of the Caribbean whose personal life suffers
when he places his music above his family because
he is desperate to pass the pan culture to a younger
generation.
