“The
Bradley Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling addition
for all fans, educators, players, historians
and fine music collectors.

Jah Bami (Damian
Marvin Walters) in Focus
|
Global
- ....His musical
style embodies a mix between reggae and soca
pulling influence from hip-hop and R&B.
....The steelpan played a
major role in his musical upbringing, since
he also witnessed his father’s steelpan
group tour Trinidad from a young age. In his
teens he gained major recognition for his
amazing talents on the steelpan, teaching
himself how to play difficult songs by ear.
However, trained to play and write music he
mastered instruments including the guitar,
piano, and drums, which helped him to
organize full orchestra ensembles later on
in life.
At age 17 he earned
himself a music scholarship at the
University of the West Indies where he
captained his school (St. Augustine Snr.
Comp) to become School Panorama Champions.
Following his championship win at school,
Jah Bami moved on to play the steelpan with
the World Champion band, “Exodus Steel
Orchestra” for eight years.

Ellington Jazz Series
presents the second “Homegrown on Common
Ground” Concert November 12
|
Connecticut,
USA - After the
success of the first “Homegrown on Common
Ground” concert last April, the Ellington
Jazz Series at the Yale School of Music
revisits the theme of having musicians from
Yale and New Haven share the stage of
Sprague Hall for an evening of exciting and
creative music. The first “Common
Ground” concert caused a sensation with a
jazz piano trio, a 20-member steel band, and
leading-edge music written by several Yale
composers for an eclectic instrumental
ensemble that included steel pans alongside
a rhythm section, winds, and strings.
...Returning by popular demand is the St.
Luke’s Steel Band from New Haven, directed
by Deborah Teason, and steel pan virtuoso
Andy Akiho. Akiho will again appear with the
St. Luke’s Band, as well as with the Yale
Steel Band and the Common Ground Ensemble.
Four composer/ performers – Andy Akiho
(steel pans), Deborah Teason, Samuel Adams
(bass), and Paul Kerekes (piano) – have
written pieces that will be premiered by
this group, which features three pan players
in addition to piano, bass, drums, and
violin.

Trinidad & Tobago’s Panorama Revisited
|
Global
- ....For myself; after an absence of 19
years from the Panorama arena, the prospect of
returning evoked a myriad of conflicting
thoughts and emotions, which started with the
initial offer made to me by the late (WITCO
Desperadoes leader) Rudolph Charles in February,
1984, my final acceptance in November, ’84, and
did not really end until the personal elation
that I felt on Carnival Sunday morning when,
true to my superstition of not waiting around
for the final tally of points after the Panorama
final the night before, I inquired of a young
newspaper vendor on Frederick Street and his
reply was music to my ears: “Renegades and
Despers tied for first.”

The Demise of the
Steelband Panorama - and the Possible
Solution
|
Global
- This year, 2010, steelbands in England
participating in the Panorama at the Notting
Hill Carnival, played for free. That is, the
bands received no monies for appearance fees or
for prizes. It is reported that this was due to
the economic melt-down now being experienced in
that country.
According to Nestor Sullivan, manager of
Trinidad and Tobago’s Pamberi Steel Orchestra,
all the territories where an annual steelband
Panorama is held, tend to follow the lead of
Trinidad and Tobago, whose nationals dominate
the technical and related sides of most of the
events. The country’s nationals have transported
the Panorama to territories around the world,
creating a potential global industry in the
process. Nonetheless, contends Sullivan,
we are now experiencing the rapid demise of the
Panorama, the biggest event on global steelband
calendars.
