“The Bradley Years”

The Bradley Years represent the definitive collection of steelband music arrangements and performances for a large steel orchestra. This collection showcases seven classic arrangements from the master arranger Clive Bradley.  Bradley is considered to be the best steelband music arranger ever by many, including his peers.  In addition, the arrangements are performed by one of the finest steelbands in the world, New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley had a very special relationship with Pantonic.  This orchestra clinched the title of panorama champions five times in seven years - performing Bradley’s musical works.  The performances were captured by Basement Recordings days before, and in one instance, mere moments before they took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband music panorama competition.

The recordings capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel orchestra fielding between one hundred and one hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other steelband music recordings in its class.

This body of musical work is a sterling addition for all fans, educators, players, historians and fine music collectors.

Les Slater Global - In an exclusive interview with When Steel Talks -  journalist, panist and former arranger of the renowned Highlanders Steel Orchestra - Les Slater, shares his overall views on Pan, Panorama and more...

“As far as a blessing or a curse, Panorama is probably a bit of both. It certainly is a blessing, having been on this incredible orbit since it began, generating a remarkable intensity within the worldwide pan community. And in Trinidad and Tobago and the Diaspora, as the only pan activity that commands interest among pan people on such a scale, it cannot but be viewed in positive terms.” ...Les Slater

Nightingales think big in ’12
“We thinking big this year!”

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - This is the proud boast of captain and arranger of the La Brea Nightingales Steel Orchestra, Tyrelle Marcelle.

Nightingales is one of the oldest steelbands in the deep south and it has had a turbulent history.

The band first rose to prominence in the 1970’s under the guidance of the late Father John Sewell, but then Nightingales slipped into a difficult period with little funding and dwindling community support.

Things changed with the arrival of Alutrint Limited a few years ago and La Brea Nightingales emerged once more as a force to be reckoned with. Apart from sponsorship of the band for Panorama, Alutrint also sponsored a series of music literacy classes under the supervision of ace musician Raf Robertson, a La Brea son-of the-soil.

“So many people have never set foot in a panyard...why? Because of the stereotype. The steelpan culture is one of the most fascinating subcultures of the Afro-Caribbean experience and should be treated as such. The music is the anthem of the experience, and, on a larger scale it reflects a significant part of our history and artistic growth as a nation. This year we celebrated and mourned, that's what the music will do as well.” ...Etienne Charles

“Well if the judges aren't satisfied, I can't win. It's simple as that. Panorama is, was and will always be a competition that has to be judged. The judges job is to award points that reflect their opinion of a piece of music. If I didn't get 100 out of 100, I want to know why. They better see me something other than just points and a "Good Luck" or "Happy Carnival" on that score sheet. I can't stand seeing comments that constantly say "Good", but points that say 18/35. Tell me where the other 17 points gone... or why it wasn't "Great."

Sixty Years After TASPO, Ellie’s First-Hand Replay
by Les Slater

TASPO in Great Britain

Global - This was a 1951 happening, definitely not of the “incidental” or “forgettable” variety – not for the steelpan world, not for the world of music, period. No, nothing of the sort for the experiment known as TASPO, the Trinidad All-Steel Percussion Orchestra (reportedly, Tobagonians had some issues with that name and that no player from Tobago had been selected, and vented their displeasure in lukewarm or non-existent support during the public drive for funds for the TASPO mission). Notwithstanding this, off TASPO went in July of ’51 to the U.K., primarily to appear in the Festival of Britain, the first representative group of Trinidadian panmen to take the steel band message well beyond the island’s shores.

So 60 years later, here’s Ellie Mannette, West Virginia University’s (WVU) resident steelpan guru, lucidly recalling the TASPO saga as if this were a last month occurrence. “It was the opening of the gates for steel band around the world,” Ellie is saying.

He is the only president of any of the three organizations to be re-elected to the post, not once, but (at least) ten times!

In all, he served as steelbands’ leader during the years 1957-1959, 1962-1971, and 1978-1979.

Steelbands get help to prepare for season

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Both panmen and management of 48 unsponsored steel orchestras (single pan, small, medium and large) received donations from Scotiabank to help in their preparation for Carnival and the Panorama competition.

The donations are given through the Scotiabank Foundation, which is dedicated to the development of youth, environment, sports and culture. The event took place at Scotia Centre, Park and Richmond Streets, Port of Spain, on Wednesday evening.

But despite this donation, steel orchestras are still finding it difficult to make it; earlier this week, 165 bands received sums of $10,000 (single pan) and $20,000 (conventional) from the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism in their preparations for the Carnival season.

...."An arranger for a single pan band is $15,000; for a conventional, it runs from $40,000 to as much as $60,000."

TCL pulls out from Skiffle Bunch

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Mere weeks before the National Panorama Competition, Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL) has withdrawn its sponsorship of Skiffle Bunch Steel Orchestra. After 30-plus years it has shattered our hopes, especially when Panorama is expected to start in two weeks time,” chief executive officer of Skiffle Bunch, Junia Regrello, said, yesterday. “However, as an enterprising organisation we have put alternative arrangements in place,” he added. The band has engaged the services of arranger Shenelle Abraham for its 2012 arrangement of Play Yourself, composed by Clive Telemaque and vocalised by calypsonian Crazy.

In an interview, Regrello said: “TCL has been experiencing some financial difficulties because, I think, of their investment in the Caribbean—Barbados and Jamaica. “Whatever profit being made in Trinidad and Tobago is being used to subsidise the shortfalls in Barbados and of course in Jamaica, where it is really bad.” Regrello, a former Member of Parliament for San Fernando West, said following the December 21, 2011 TCL board meeting, they were assured the company would continue the relationship, “as bad as things were.”

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Another chapter in the colourful history of the steelband was written at 9.35 pm on Friday when the Lydian Singers mounted a stage in the panyard of Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove Steel Orchestra in Woodbrook to render the band’s 2012 Panorama offering Archbishop Of Pan. It was the first time a full choir had performed in a panyard for the launch of a band’s Panorama selection. The occasion was a reminder, also, that it was a milestone achievement for a choir to vocalise a song composed by a panist, had lyrics written by a calypsonian, and musical arrangement administered by an esteemed multi-instrumentalist.

Archbishop Of Pan is a musical tribute to the late musicologist Dr Pat Bishop, composed by Len “Boogsie” Sharpe with lyrics by Gregory “GB” Ballantyne, arrangement by Leston Paul, and vocalised by The Lydian Singers.

These include the famous riots outside Globe cinema, Pan Parang, Pan in the 21st century, Pan at NAPA (National Academy for the Performing Arts), Pan Night and Day, the P.H.I. (Percussive Harmonic Instrument) and Sparrow’s “the outcast” to name a few.

Junior Panorama 2012

St. Lucia, W.I. - With its history spanning much farther back than that of independence, pan music in St. Lucia has long struggled to remain firmly on the cultural calendar.

After a five year stump, Junior Panorama has returned. Throughout the months of September 2011 to January 2012, though under the radar, many youth with the majority between the ages of six and twelve have been participants of an ongoing steel pan training programme. Initiated by the Cultural Development Foundation, and facilitated and sponsored by UNESCO, the programme’s efforts are aimed at developing the art form and recognizing its needs and significance in the community, to youth, and to musicians.

The five month “Youth Steel Pan Training Programme” with its requirements being specifically “No Experience Necessary,” has engaged interested minors, and aspiring, capable and unseasoned arrangers, in practicing musical scales and chord progressions, observing musical timing, and inevitably, producing a warm up and test piece for Junior Panorama 2012.

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - The band is captained by Pete Braxton, 22, who has been with the band for the past ten years, with Marchan and Bailey and as first and second vice captains respectively.

But while winning Panorama is the band’s focus, “because everybody likes to win”, the main intention continues to bring a group of people together.

[Franka] Hills-Headley said, “This year we intend to change our environment. Our physical environment, our space will be clean, the way we interact with each other must change. When we get outside as a band, we must impact the people around us and cause those we meet to change their impression of young people.”

‘Archbishop’ makes musical icons cry

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - The creators of “Archbishop of Pan,” panist Len “Boogsie” Sharpe and composer Gregory (GB) Ballantyne, were moved to tears at the media launch of the work at Chaud, corner Dundonald Street and Queen’s Park West, Port-of-Spain, yesterday. The song is a collaborative effort of the two artistes, with ace arranger Leston Paul doing the arrangement and vocalised by the Lydian Singers. It was recorded at Sunset Studios, Mt Lambert, and is the song of choice for Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove Steel Orchestra in this year’s National Steelband Panorama Competition.

Boogsie had to excuse himself from the gathering after breaking down in tears during an address by Phase II’s manager Errol Skerrit, when he stated: “The song, Archbishop of Pan, had its genesis during ‘Boogsie’s highly emotional performance at Pat Bishop’s memorial service where he was moved to tears, and there and then knew in his heart it was his obligation to write this highly inspirational tribute.”

Despers’ new kid on the block
21-year-old handed baton for Panorama 2012

Managing director of West Indies Tobacco Company Jean-Pierre du Coudray, left, presents new Witco Desperadoes arranger Andre White with a gift-wrapped baton during a news conference to introduce White this weekTrinidad & Tobago, W.I. - “It’s a long road that has no turning.” Paul Newman’s line in The Verdict might serve as an allegory for Laventille Road, though fresh-faced Andre White, 21, Desperadoes’ newest arranger, would disagree. Since arriving in Trinidad on December 23 from his home in Freeport, Long Island, New York, he’d never been up the Hill, despite previous visits to his ancestral homeland. “At every corner the driver tooted his horn,” he said. “What a ride!” Kirt Gordon, Despers newly minted captain, took White up the serpentine road on Thursday, unwittingly allowing residents to catch a peek at the musician who has won three Panorama titles in New York and London, two of them back-to-back.

White could feel the gaze from the windows and jalousies at each blow of the horn. He wore a red Polo shirt and when he climbed out of the car at the panyard, a fella said to him: “You done have we colours already. You a Despers now. So far so good.” That has always been the case. So far, always good. White was born within a short walk of Adlib Steel Orchestra, which was founded in Freeport by Caribbean-Americans in 1989.

Steel drum performer introduces children to wide world of percussion

Percussionist Ian Dobson plays his steel drums made from old oil barrels for a wide array of parents and children who attended a demonstration last week at Puyallup Public Library in downtown Puyallup

Washington, USA - Children and adults were taken on a Caribbean vacation last Wednesday at the Puyallup Public Library when steel drum performer Ian Dobson came to visit.

The program, called “Recycalypso,” introduced the audience to a variety of percussion instruments and gave children an opportunity to design their own instrument out of recyclable materials.

“See what you can do if you put your mind to it?” Dobson asked. “You can make an instrument out of junk.”

....At the end of the program, all the children assembled and performed a Caribbean song on their new instruments, accompanied by Dobson on steel drums and Dobson’s music partner, Christian Krehbiel.

Police raid panman’s home in Brazil

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - With the Christmas season over, the Carnival bacchanal has reared its ugly head, resulting in police raiding the home of a steelband leader in East Trinidad and seizing several pans.

The steelband in question is Brazil Rhythmic Xpressions (RX)-4 Steel Orchestra of Talparo Main Road, Brazil Village, a single-pan steelband.

Around 10.30 am on New Year’s Day, Michael “Spanka” Oliverie was greeted at his home at St Martin Street, Brazil Village by two armed policemen from the San Rafael Police Station, who ordered the removal of steel pans from his home and demanded the keys for the nearby pan tent.

A shaken Oliverie explained, “Police officers #14536 Cpl Evans, #18011 PC Riley, along with Anthony Walker, who East Pan Trinbago trustee Alphion Toyron and Anthony Husbands invaded my home and had me under duress as they removed the community steelband’s instruments and seized the keys for the pan tent.

“I have already reported the unlawful act to Deputy Commissioner Stephen Williams,” he said, adding that it was Williams who had encouraged him some years ago to form the steelband for the benefit of the youths.

Panorama headache for Koskeros

Koskeros

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Members of Koskeros Steel Orchestra are worried about the 2k12 Carnival season since they might not have anywhere to call home.

Leader/arranger the orchestra, Kenny “Boy Boy” Pascal told TnT Mirror that he was told that there are plans to evict them soon from their Railway Road, Rio Claro home.

“People are coming and taking measurements, but no one said anything official to us or served us any notice.

“We have been operating for over 20 years and I think we should be informed of what is taking place,” Pascal said.  The band was expected to begin practice from January 03.

Mirror was reliably informed that the land belongs to the Public Transport Service Commission (PTSC) and steps are being taken to acquire it for the construction of a transit hub.

Arnold wants second carnival

Tobago, W.I. - Chairman of the National Carnival Commission Patrick Arnold has crossed swords with the THA's position of no second carnival for Tobago.

Arnold who served for 12 years as President of Pan Trinbago was recently appointed as head of the national carnival body. He has taken issue with the THA position to oppose a second carnival for Tobago.

Arnold who is an internationally recognised pan tuner feels that "The THA was denying lucrative opportunities for Tobago's cultural artistes and the island's tourism industry by the position it has taken on the matter." Arnold said "while countries all over the world were using Trinbago-styled carnival as major tourism events, Tobago which is part of the twin island Republic was being denied the right to benefit exclusively from such an event."

....Arnold recalled how Our Boys steel band from Tobago participated in Trinbago styled carnivals in New York, Canada and Texas, San Francisco and Los Angeles. He wondered what meaningful arguments the THA could use to deny the people of Tobago the right to stage an exclusive Tobago carnival when it was done before.

Pan music missing from town centre

Earl La Pierre and Olujimi La Pierre perform at Camana Bay Town Centre

Cayman Islands - Camana Bay Town Centre is no longer featuring steel pan music on the Paseo on Wednesday nights.

According to Camana Bay Town Centre manager Ken Hydes, there are a number of programmes at the town centre they are looking to revamp in 2012. One of these programmes is Wednesday nights’ Live on The Paseo, which included the La Pierre family steel pan music.

....“We are very grateful to Earl La Pierre for the services that he has provided to Camana Bay over the past couple of years and we look forward to working with him and other steel panners at various events at Camana Bay in the future.”

....Mr. Hydes said Camana Bay does not have a performance to fill the vacant slot.

After entertaining the community and tourists for the past four years, the La Pierre family said it was sad to hear Camana Bay is discontinuing steel pan music on the Paseo on Wednesdays.

“This is a big loss, not only to me and my family but to the community and the schools who are encouraging pan music on a professional level and the opportunity it presents to the community to hear steel pan music,” Mr. La Pierre said.

Olujimi La Pierre, 22, also was disappointed Camana Bay has decided to end the performance.
