“The Bradley Years”

The Bradley Years represent the definitive collection of steelband music arrangements and performances for a large steel orchestra. This collection showcases seven classic arrangements from the master arranger Clive Bradley.  Bradley is considered to be the best steelband music arranger ever by many, including his peers.  In addition, the arrangements are performed by one of the finest steelbands in the world, New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley had a very special relationship with Pantonic.  This orchestra clinched the title of panorama champions five times in seven years - performing Bradley’s musical works.  The performances were captured by Basement Recordings days before, and in one instance, mere moments before they took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband music panorama competition.

The recordings capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel orchestra fielding between one hundred and one hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other steelband music recordings in its class.

This body of musical work is a sterling addition for all fans, educators, players, historians and fine music collectors.

Pan Trinbago to get new headquarters

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Government may have to start from scratch on the construction of a headquarters for Pan Trinbago, despite spending approximately $4 million on the existing structure at Orange Grove, Tacarigua. Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism Lincoln Douglas said, in an interview yesterday, that over $40 million was estimated to have the headquarters completed. “We met last week with Udecott (Urban Development Corporation of T&T), who is the project manager, and Pan Trinbago and we are currently in the process of creating new designs for the organisation,” Douglas said.

Douglas said new designs might include training classes, a pan museum and money-making facilities. “We are also evaluating the current structure to see if it is workable or if we need to start fresh.” The structure is 11 years old and shows signs of neglect and vandalism.

Carnival TV streams Tobago Jazz Festival 2013

Etienne Charles & Kaiso perform at the 2013 Tobago Jazz Festival

Global - Carnival TV has quickly established itself as one of the leading organizations for streaming music entertainment content out of the Caribbean. For those who are unfamiliar with Carnival TV, they are the media broadcast company that has been providing the internet stream of the annual Trinidad and Tobago steel orchestra music national panorama competition for the last three years.  This time around they took on the challenge of delivering the performances of the 2013 Jazz Festival to the world over the internet. Carnival TV is no stranger to the sometimes daunting task that is layered with unsuspecting technical, human and natural minefields - where the only thing you can depend on - is that there will be problems in broadcasting a live show over the internet.

Festival to celebrate the steel pan

Students from Somersfield Academy practice for their upcoming steel Pan Jazz Festival in May.

Bermuda -  Bermuda’s first Pan Jazz Festival takes place next month, celebrating one of the world’s most versatile instruments.

Organised by Somersfield Academy and Atlantic Publishing, the festival will include the 18-piece Somersfield Steel Pan Orchestra, the Happy Hands steel pan group and the Bermuda School of Music and the Giant Steps Band.

“I think the steel pan is a nice instrument for young people to be versatile on,” said Somersfield music teacher Janice Pearman. “We play all different styles of music on the instrument. It is comparable to your traditional orchestra. You can play any style of music whether you want classical or jazz, contemporary, calypso or reggae. I think it is one of those instruments where the children can achieve something at a very quick stage.”

Borough Day launches again without Govt $$

Members of the Sancity orchestra perform D Point Song during the launch of Point Fortin Borough Day celebrations on Friday evening

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Point Fortin Borough Day celebrations are considered by many as the biggest festival after the Carnival season, but once again festivities have been launched without the Government’s funding. Hundreds came out at the refurbished Victor Chin Kit Park for Friday night’s launch which turned into a street party featuring Soca Monarch and Road March champion 2013 Austin “SuperBlue” Lyons, H2O Phlo and Jeunes Agape.

A talented line-up of steelbands which included Tornadoes Steel Orchestra, Trinmar Marines, Fucsdat panside and Fonclaire Steel Orchestra created an enticing preview of things to come over the next three weeks of celebrations which culminates on the actual Borough Day, May 4. Despite the festive opening to the season, chairman of the Point Fortin Borough Corporation’s Sports and Festivals Committee Sherwin St Hillaire said funding challenges continued to hinder the expansion of the celebrations.

Australia - In February 2009, a fire tragically destroyed most of the town’s infrastructure, and claimed several lives in this small community.  Marysville, a lovely town surrounded by mountains and lush green forests, and one of Victoria’s highest waterfalls, has been rebuilt by a strong and resilient community.

This spirit could clearly be felt throughout the Festival, which was spearheaded by Rita Seethaler, a Swiss musician now resident in nearby Taggerty, who responded to the tragic incident by forming community steelbands like Pans on Fire, Hot Pans and Jammin’.

Jamaica, W.I.  - Bolstered by several costume changes and high-energy performances, the University of the West Indies (UWI) Panoriddim Steel Orchestra's Panfest 2013 was a tapestry of innovation and creativity. The third of the four-day panfest was held last Saturday at the Philip Sherlock Centre on the UWI, Mona campus.

Armed with 23 instruments, the orchestra treated the audience to a wide cross section of musical genres, all creatively arranged. The cross section included Latin, jazz, calypso and reggae. The concert will also be remembered for the group's innovative use of numbers, as well as the announcement of the pieces.

According to Raisha Lovindeer, the orchestra's spokesperson for the 2013 concert, there was a decision to have a countdown of the 10 commandments of pan. This decision was to make its way into the title of the concert - When the Pan Strikes 10.

TDSB considers muting music programs to balance budget

Marcus Reeeb (L), Ellen Harper, Elodie Oliver, Victoria Crichton and Will Adams, members of The Toronto All Stars Steel Orchestra, practise at Rosedale Public School, Toronto June 30 2011.

Toronto, Canada - The Toronto District School Board is considering cuts to its music programs that could reduce the amount of time elementary students spend playing in bands and orchestras.

The board is tackling a nearly $30-million deficit, and staff suggested in a recent budget report that savings could be found by cutting back on the hours of instruction students get with itinerant music instructors, musicians who lead bands, string and steel pan groups for students in Grade 5 through 8.

The proposed cuts would result in layoffs for about half of the board’s 107 instructors. Students at close to 300 schools would see their band hours reduced by 24 per cent, strings by 29 per cent and steel pans by 19 per cent. The cuts would also eliminate a staff development program that provides music training to teachers.

Codrington Pan Family stars in ‘An Evening of Music’

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - The musical artistry exhibited by the Codrington Pan Family was the highlight of An Evening of Music presented by music band Rick G and Friends at Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s, on Friday night. Cary Codrington, his wife Karen, and children Kareem, Khari, Kaijah, Keisha, Kamau and Kizzi, appearing as guest artistes on the playbill, displayed their virtuoso skills on a range of instruments that included saxophone, bass guitar, keyboard, drums, percussion and steelpan.

The group held the small audience captive throughout a thickly orchestrated six-song set that opened with the vintage Georgia On My Mind and ended with the classic Old Lady Walk A Mile. In a showcase of abundant versatility, some members seamlessly switched between instruments during the performance without causing any interruption to the harmonic elements and rhythmic structure of the music.

Ambridge steel drums celebrate silver anniversary

Pennsylvania, USA - The Ambridge Area Steel Drum bands will perform a silver anniversary show Saturday, and if you've ever heard them play you know that means one thing.

"Fun," band director Todd Hartman said.

"It's just students enjoying themselves, playing what they've worked so hard to learn," Hartman said. "It's got a lot of energy. We'll get people tapping their toes."

...Honoring musical tradition, and spinning it on its ear, are all part of the fun for the Ambridge Steel Drum bands, whose legacy has spanned performances in the 2004 Rose Bowl Parade, the 1995 AFC Championship Game at Three Rivers Stadium, as an opening act for Steven Spielberg at a San Francisco banquet, and numerous western Pennsylvania festivals, conventions, corporate events and just about everywhere else where people have craved calypso sounds that originated more than a century ago in Trinidad and Tobago.

Premiere: Fimber Bravo Debuts ‘Dimbaya’ Video

Trinidadian steel-pan player signed to Moshi Moshi records debuts solo album ‘Con-fusion’

The 'Dimbaya' videoEngland, UK - 'Dimbaya' translates as "to celebrate." The past week has involved a fair few celebrations - some less well-intentioned than others - so perhaps it's apt that Fimber Bravo's latest single gains a new video today. Regardless, on the basis of this Jonny Sanders-directed video, produced by Charlotte Knight, the idea of "celebration" is a little more confusing than we might've originally thought.

The Trinidadian steel-pan player - signed to Moshi Moshi records with a debut solo album 'Con-fusion' to his name - celebrates by hiring a troupe of dancers, giving them his instinctively fun music to dance to, and painting the scene in neon shades.

Taiwan embraces pan and calypso

Taiwan - Upon returning from a visit to Trinidad in 1957, American folk musician and political icon Pete Seeger announced that pan “was destined to spread to the farthest reaches of the globe.” And indeed, the past half century has seen the sounds and spirit of pan infiltrate six continents and countless countries.

In some places (Europe and North America) the inroads have been brisk, and others not so much. In the latter category falls Asia—a relatively recent conquest for the music of pan. Taiwan may not be located in the Caribbean, but this part of Asia has been moving and grooving to pan for nearly 25 years. All thanks to one important Trinidad-America-Taiwan pan connection.

It was with great excitement and curiosity that the people of Taiwan welcomed pan legend Cliff Alexis in fall of 1988 as he arrived to build pans for Taipei National University of the Arts. Alexis and his colleague Al O’Connor from Northern Illinois University had been invited by the Taipei National University of the Arts to build pans and establish a steelband in an effort to expand the music department’s existing percussion program.
