“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings capture, reproduce
and present an unrivalled clarity with sonic
realism, of a large steel orchestra fielding
between one hundred and one hundred twenty musicians
- unlike any other steelband music recordings
in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling addition
for all fans, educators, players, historians
and fine music collectors.

Pan Trinbago to get new headquarters
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
Government may have to start from scratch on the
construction of a headquarters for Pan Trinbago,
despite spending approximately $4 million on the
existing structure at Orange Grove, Tacarigua.
Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism Lincoln
Douglas said, in an interview yesterday, that
over $40 million was estimated to have the
headquarters completed. “We met last week with
Udecott (Urban Development Corporation of T&T),
who is the project manager, and Pan Trinbago and
we are currently in the process of creating new
designs for the organisation,” Douglas said.
Douglas said new designs might include training
classes, a pan museum and money-making
facilities. “We are also evaluating the current
structure to see if it is workable or if we need
to start fresh.” The structure is 11 years old
and shows signs of neglect and vandalism. read more

Festival to celebrate the steel pan
Bermuda
- Bermuda’s first Pan Jazz Festival takes place next month,
celebrating one of the world’s most versatile

Organised by Somersfield Academy and Atlantic

School of Music and the Giant Steps Band.
“I think the steel pan is a nice instrument for
young people to be versatile on,” said
Somersfield music teacher Janice Pearman. “We
play all different styles of music on the
instrument. It is comparable to your traditional

TDSB considers muting music programs to
balance budget
Toronto, Canada
- The Toronto District School Board is
considering cuts to its music programs that
could reduce the amount of time elementary
students spend playing in bands and orchestras.
The board is tackling a nearly $30-million
deficit, and staff suggested in a recent budget
report that savings could be found by cutting
back on the hours of instruction students get
with itinerant music instructors, musicians who
lead bands, string and steel pan groups for
students in Grade 5 through 8.
The proposed cuts would
result in layoffs for about half of the board’s
107 instructors. Students at close to 300
schools would see their band hours reduced by 24
per cent, strings by 29 per cent and steel pans
by 19 per cent. The cuts would also eliminate a
staff development program that provides music
training to teachers. read more

Taiwan embraces pan and calypso
Taiwan
- Upon returning from a visit to Trinidad in
1957, American folk musician and political icon
Pete Seeger announced that pan “was destined to
spread to the farthest reaches of the globe.”
And indeed, the past half century has seen the
sounds and spirit of pan infiltrate six
continents and countless countries.
In some places (Europe and North America) the
inroads have been brisk, and others not so much.
In the latter category falls Asia—a relatively
recent conquest for the music of pan. Taiwan may
not be located in the Caribbean, but this part
of Asia has been moving and grooving to pan for
nearly 25 years. All thanks to one important
Trinidad-America-Taiwan pan connection.
It was with great excitement and curiosity that
the people of Taiwan welcomed pan legend Cliff
Alexis in fall of 1988 as he arrived to build
pans for Taipei National University of the Arts.
Alexis and his colleague Al O’Connor from
Northern Illinois University had been invited by

build pans and establish a steelband in an
