“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

Not Going to New York
Panorama 2015 but... Are Steelpan Musicians
Worth More Than A Selfie?
|
Brooklyn, New York -
After nights of sacrifice and practice in some
very unfriendly conditions, there are some
minimal expectations that these performing
steelpan musicians should reasonably expect.
After all, the Brooklyn panists are an awesome
talent who are investing their time, monies and
energies in this magnificent art form. Moreover,
they have been a critical contributor to the
cultural landscape of New York.

Representing Brooklyn BSO Holds It Down at the International Panorama
|
New York, USA -
“Who are they?” “What did they do?” “Are they a sports team?” were the questions heard around the arrival hall of Terminal 4. And without hesitation, proud parent Lisa Samuel—who was one of the very few on hand to greet the returning musicians, and ensured that each personally got a huge welcome as they came out of ‘customs’—would explain their accomplishments to the curious onlookers. And as per a special osmosis, they too would beam with pride and joy.

Gender and pan
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- The early steelband,
a crucial site of power and privilege for panmen
through which they established an identity,
still holds true for the contemporary steelband
even though women were now in middle management
positions.
This is
according to Joanna Shortt, a musician,
educator, composer, and steelband adjudicator
who said that, “Men still continue to control
the apparatus of power in the Caribbean and
although women have experience some mobility and
increase the status of women over the years,
these advances do not represent the diminishing
of real power.
This holds
true to the contemporary steelband movement.” In
a presentation on “Gendered roles and discourse
in two contemporary steelband in Trinidad and
Tobago” on August 6, at the International
Conference and Panorama at the Hyatt Regency,
Shortt looked at Desperadoes and Invaders steel
orchestras because they were the two active,
successful, historically and culturally relevant
large conventional steelbands.

Brooklyn Steel Orchestra Armed and Ready for the Steel Band International Panorama
|
Brooklyn, New York -
The contingent of the amalgamation of some of Brooklyn’s finest steelpan musicians ran through their final paces at a practice When Steel Talks attended, before heading to Trinidad under the banner of Brooklyn Steel Orchestra. Without doubt this is the greatest gathering of Brooklyn, New York steelpan music performing artists assembled from all the New York steel orchestra franchises for a single musical performing purpose.
BSO will be performing this carnival season’s monster hit “Ah Feeling” as their tune of choice. The “Lead Pipe” and “Saddis” composition took the Caribbean and Caribbeanites overseas by storm this past year. Accomplished New York-based arrangers Odie Franklin, Kendall Williams and Marc Brooks will provide the musical direction and arrangement for the orchestra - and the group will be operating under the leadership of Travis Roberts and Kernel Simon.

French Federation of Steelbands Created: “Steelband en
France”
|
France
- France has had
steelbands for several decades now. They were
first adopted in the French West Indian
community (from Martinique and Guadeloupe), and
became more widespread since the 90s. However,
beside a mailing list connecting most of the
‘actors’ (215 members) in a Pan community,
France never had any kind of formal
organization.
Stimulated by the need of an
official representation at the international
level, a set of French steelbands decided to
create a federation.

Founded in 2000 by Cecile
“Tortee” Philgence, the band’s goal has
always been the development of young people
through music, specifically the steel pan art
form. Pantime has also won the Junior Panorama

St. Lucia 2015 Panorama Results - A Three-Peat for
PanTime Steel Orchestra as Champions Yet Again
Amrit Samaroo is Champion Panorama Arranger
|
Gros Islet, St. Lucia, W.I. -
Defending Panorama
champs PanTime Steel Orchestra appeared in the
penultimate spot in this year’s competition, and
tasted the bitter-sweet success of a three-peat
as 2015 Panorama champs, without the physical
presence of one of their stalwart supporters, in
the person of the wife of band manager Cecil
‘Tortee’ Philgence.
The orchestra, founded in
2001, was Panorama champion in 2013 and 2014,
making the grade on each occasion with long-time
arranger Amrit Samaroo. Aiming for three titles
in a row and succeeding, PanTime paid homage to
the beloved wife of their band manager who
passed away, and delivered Aunty Pam as their
tune of choice, composed and arranged by
Samaroo.

Beyond pan, mas, All
Stars bids now for business glory
|
Trinidad &
Tobago, W.I.
- That Massy
Trinidad All
Stars has
moved into
business, as an
investor in
high-value Port
of Spain real
estate, marks a
historic
development for
that leading
steelband. Hell
Yard, its
evocative and
legendary
address, is now
demonstrably too
small to contain
the band’s
boundless 2015
aspirations.
Massy Trinidad
All Stars has
now become owner
of the 42-44
Duke Street
property lying
immediately to
the south and
east of the
landmark
panyard.
Expectations
inevitably arise
for the band to
prove itself not
just as a
landlord, but
also as a
property
developer.
The 80-year old
band may
justifiably
boast of a
distinguished
track record in
winning Panorama
competitions
and, lately, and
more
astonishingly,
Carnival Band of
the Year titles.
At this big and
enviable
juncture, All

mandated by
history to
demonstrate for
the steelband
movement’s
community
organisations
the capacity to
conquer fields
beyond those of
music and
