“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

Steelband Music in
Trinidad & Tobago:
The Creation of a People’s Music
William R. Aho, Ph.D.
|
Global-
The focus of this paper is the class, color, and race components in the struggle to create a people’s music — a music originally and essentially of the economically disadvantaged and less formally educated citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, primarily those of African descent. It is based on interviews with former and present panmen and pan women in Trinidad and Tobago and also draws on government documents, newspapers, and personal observations during some sixteen months of fieldwork in Trinidad between 1972 and 1985.

NYU Steel Makes History
with the New York Theatre Ballet
|
New York, USA
- NYU Steel has been
turning heads and breaking new ground for a
while now. Unafraid to challenge the norms and
traditional Western music and performance
thinking - from its inception, NYU Steel has
simply been a game-changer. This week (February
24 to February 27, 2016) NYU Steel is being
featured in the World Premiere production of the
New York Theatre Ballet performing to Philip
Glass' Piano Etudes, choreographed by Steven
Melendez and Zhong-Jing Fang.
....The
union of NYU Steel with the New York Theatre
Ballet is a continuation of the vision of
Professor Jonathan Haas to capture the
imagination of an international audience while
challenging the members of NYU Steel to be
innovative, creative and expressive.

Tearful tributes to
‘Trini at heart’
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
Murdered Japanese panist Asami Nagakiya was
among a group of her compatriots who played mas
with Legacy on Carnival Tuesday and had been
with the band up to 1 pm that day, but wasn’t
seen after that, Legacy bandleader Mike “Big
Mike” Antoine said last night.
....Band arranger Marcus Ash, another Silver
Stars colleague, said: “She was more Trini than
the average Trini. She knew all about chaddon
beni and our culture. I took the group to the
beach and gave them a sip of puncheon rum and
Asami screamed and ran into the water. She
played with many bands and it was never for a
price. She was very well known in the pan
fraternity and she did it all out of love.”
Ash, colleague Junior “Peppy” Goolcharan and
other Silver Stars colleagues also slammed
comments made in relation to Nagakiya’s death by
Port-of-Spain Mayor Raymond Tim Kee, saying they
were “out of place”, “disrespectful”, “very
disgusting” and “completely inappropriate”. They
added that she never engaged in vulgar
behaviour, didn’t even know how to wine and
dressed modestly, but knew her way around the
city.

Steelband community
stunned
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
...The killing by strangulation of Japanese-born
steelband player Asami Nagakiya has stunned her
family, friends and the entire steelband
community.
A PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars tenor pan player
since 2012, Nagakiya was found dead, still clad
in her yellow two-piece Carnival costume, on Ash
Wednesday morning. Her body was found wedged
among the roots of a tree on the western end of
the Queen’s Park Savannah, not far from Queen’s
Royal College.
She was wearing a “Legacy” ID band and some
jewellery. An autopsy yesterday ascertained she
had been strangled.
Yesterday, businessman Larry Lai, a colleague
who knew her for seven years, said she spoke
English very well and had arrived in T&T with
the ability to play pan, having learned the
instrument while in Japan.

Joey Lewis, A Musical
Trail-Blazer
by Les Slater
|
Global -
...The term “icon” is tossed around much too
loosely in our culture. Happily, it was not
wasted on Joey Lewis, a giant of a musical
presence not only in his native Trinidad and
Tobago, but throughout the Eastern Caribbean,
ever since he became a bandleader while still in
his teens in the mid 1950s. After ailing for
some time, the giant would walk no more as of
the early morning of Monday, February 8, 2016.
One might note somewhat of a sense of cosmic
correctness, perhaps, in his adieu, at age 78,
coming shortly before the J’Ouvert celebration
that ushered in Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival,
Carnival having been one of the Lewis
orchestra’s annual music-making arenas, before
he withdrew from Carnival involvement some years
ago.

When will the persecution
of Pan Trinbago Inc. cease?
by Michael L. Joseph
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
Gary G. Aboud of Port of Spain says that he is
a lover of Pan, but Pan Trinbago does not have
the skill and efficiency to manage $34 million
dollars in prize money that the government
contributes toward Steelbands, participation in
the national festival.
This malicious person went on to say, that the
Sunday of the National Panorama Semi finals, the
place was packed to capacity and that persons
were selling stolen tickets outside the gates
for half the price and he demands to know how
many tickets were sold by Pan Trinbago.
This malicious lover of Pan went on to allege
that Pan Trinbago is a FIFA type secret society
in T&T and that not one of these officials have
anything of substance to show. The persecution
seems to go on and on!

Despers Does It
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
After sixteen barren years, fans of
Desperadoes were yesterday savouring sweet
victory as the panmen from the Laventille
Hills snatched the 2016 National Panorama
crown with a clinical musical display at the
finals on Saturday at the Queen’s Park
Savannah. Despers extended its lead as the
number one Panorama Steel Orchestra in the
world with its 11th Panorama title.
At about 1.42 am, playing in position nine out
of ten, the band performed a distinctly Despers musical arrangement of ‘Different Me’
as arranged by Carlton Zanda Alexander.
The players had a wonderful start and from
there it was just magical. After the
introduction Zanda came through the bass on
the eastern side of the stage to take up his
position in front of the band.

‘Different Me’ snatches
$1million prize
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
Desperadoes Steel Orchestra ended a 15-year
drought of Panorama wins on Saturday night when
it captured the 2016 National Steelband Panorama
title and $1million prize at the Queen’s Park
Savannah in Port-of-Spain.
Playing a Carlton “Zanda” Alexander arrangement
of Different Me, composed by Jovan James and
sung by 5 Star Akil, the band from the hills of
Laventille registered its eleventh victory at
the 53rd edition of the annual steelband contest
presented by Pan Trinbago by amassing a score of
285 points.
The last time Desperadoes won a Panorama title
was in 2000 playing a Clive Bradley’s
arrangement of Oba Sinnette’s Picture On My
Wall.

Pan Elders tricks ‘em
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
South-based band Pan Elders, for the third
consecutive year, won the Medium Band category
of the National Steelband Panorama Finals on
Saturday at the Queen’s Park Savannah.
They were the first band on stage on the night.
They came dressed in all white with three green
sashlike stripes across their shirts and looking
hungry for victory.
Arranger Duvonne Stewart had the players do
wrist exercises and upbeat chants before they
started to deliver a musical treat to the crowd.
The band executed a fantastic arrangement of
Leston Paul’s “We Eh Fighting”, sung by Errol
“Bally” Ballantyne.

Finance Minister advises,

Steelband instruments are one of several items
which will not be subject to the revised Value
Added Tax (VAT) regime. This was revealed in a
special notice published by the Finance Ministry
in the name of Finance Minister Colm Imbert.
Referring to the VAT
(Amendment to Schedule 2) Order 2016, the
ministry said, “This schedule identifies items
that are zero-rated. Any item which has not been
identified on this schedule is subject to VAT at
the rate of 12.5 percent.” Among the items which
do not attract the new VAT rate are steelband
instruments, listed as number 29 in the notice.

The Best Finally Arrived
by Dalton Narine
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
....Beverly Griffith proved (and rightly so),
that the arranger is largely responsible for the
Despers sound, not necessarily the galaxy of
tuners that the late Rudolph Charles inveigled
to come up Laventille Hill to keep him company.
So it is befitting that, 30 years after his
death, Desperadoes has won its eleventh title,
having been stuck on No. 10 for sixteen years.
....Despers’
manager Curtis Edwards can now make a deductive
argument: We have set ourselves a difficult task,
but we'll succeed if we persevere, and players will
find joy in overcoming obstacles.

Trinidad

....On Saturday, Despers sent the crowd wild
with their performance in position nine. It was
not as flashy as those of other bands, but
offered great musicianship and excitement.
Alexander had taken the tempo up and added in
several new elements, which included lines that
took the audience back to vintage Desperadoes
style and riffs reminiscent of Clive Bradley.

Trinidad

steel pan musicians have helped a small-town steel
orchestra in Trinidad defy the odds and take second
place in the 2016 Panorama Competitions on Saturday
night.
MJ Byron,
Omandy Byron and Kazrano Gumbs played with Supernovas,
and narrowly missed the top spot by one point. The

According
to Gumbs the three of them have been participating

Last year
some musicians from Supernovas played with Gemonites
for Panorama and were so impressed with the three

Trinidad All Stars Says “Leave
We Alone” - They’ve Got Championship Business to
Attend to at Panorama Finals 2016
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - Coming
out of the semi finals they found themselves tied
for third position as part of an all-world cast
of distinguished competitors with a score of 271
and vying for the 2016 Panorama championship. But
this is not just another contender. Their name is
Trinidad All Stars. A name that reverberates around
the world and denotes - champions, professionalism,
history and confidence. Oh, and by the way they
are the defending champions.
The tune of
choice for Trinidad All Stars is “Leave We Alone”
written by Clive Telemaque, who is a veteran player
in the orchestra. And their musical director is
champion arranger Leon “Smooth” Edwards. While “Leave
We Alone” is a partially humorous tune delivered
with tongue-in-cheek witticism - it does speak to
the real challenges and jealousies the franchise
has experienced in part because of its winning pedigree.

Final Results of Small Conventional
Steel Orchestras - Trinidad & Tobago Panorama 2016
|
Trinidad

Golden Symphony wins the Small Orchestra Panorama
2016 title, and in doing so, together with no doubt
happy and proud champion arranger Terrance “BJ”
Marcelle, racks up seven championships in the last
eight annual competitions, having had the title
wrested from them only in 2014, courtesy of then-small
steel orchestra Supernovas. Playing ‘D Greatest
Invention’ by The Original De Fosto Himself, Arima
Golden Symphony has undoubtedly proven itself the
greatest ‘small steel orchestra’ in the twelve-year
history of the category.
Three weeks
after the respective small steel orchestra preliminary
rounds, stiff competition left room for only the
ten best out of an initial field of fifty-one to
take the stage on finals night on February 4th
at Skinner Park in south Trinidad.

Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - The legendary
Desperadoes Steel Orchestra have got their swagger

And yes, for Panorama 2016 "Different Me" is the
operative descriptive for the musical juggernaut.
Embracing
a host of significant changes for a franchise that
has been steeped in tradition, resistant to change
and locked in the "Desperadoes way" - is, for lack
of a better word, very "different" - maybe even
shocking.
....The move
to switch from long-time champion arranger Robert

“Zanda” sent shockwaves through the steelpan music
continuum that were felt globally.
