“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

- “*Sigh and smile* Bass is BAE! I must admit
when I first was introduced to steel pan, from
an optical perspective the bass was the pan I
did NOT want to play. It looked so “obzocky” and
“cumbersome.” Then I was left no option but to
play the 6 bass and I was hesitant, but as soon
as I played the first song I learned “Feeling
hot hot hot” I knew that the bass and I would
have an everlasting bond. This pan is truly my
love.”
It’s a serious love affair between her and her
bass. You only have to watch her perform once
and witness the joy and exuberance she has for
the art form. In an exclusive interview with
When Steel Talks - panist Leah Wilson shares her
reflections, experiences and views on Pan, and

- “I can’t remember when I was ever not aware of
the existence of Steel Pan. I remember being
about 7 years old, begging my dad to get my own
Pan and learn how to play... My dad (Richard
Bactowal “Buntin”) played in Pan Am North Stars
in Trinidad, and was one of the founders of
Brooklynaires here in New York, so Steel Pan has
always been a part of my family. Both my family
in the States (USA) and Trinidad support my love
for the instrument and they are so proud that I
play.”
To simply say that Pan is a major part of her
life would be an understatement. She is wrapped
in the arms of the proverbial Pan-Jumbie - with
no escape. In an exclusive interview with When

Bactowal shares her reflections, experiences and

Earl Rodney’s big wish
More recognition needed
for one of the country’s top arrangers
|
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I.
- Winning arranger of four out of eight attempts
at Panorama (a 50 per cent winning achievement
with second and third places thrown into the
mix) is not too bad of a record for a
“country-boy come to town” to jam against the
likes of Bradley, Holman, Jules and other “big
noise” arrangers of the day.
Earl Bostic Rodney intervened in 1968 in the
Panorama competition with Kitchener’s The
Wrecker.
“It was an opening with drama and excitement
that had not been previously experienced in a
Panorama,” says Rodney, beating out the opening
bars of his arrangement that won Solo Harmonites
the Panorama competition. I wish I could
reproduce on paper his verbal simulation of the
arrangement. Check it on You Tube.
The arrangement was among the first in the
evolving trend of taking up the tempo but still
weaving in the melody of the piece with
extrapolations on the theme—there are those who
would argue, Rodney amongst them, that the
Panorama arrangements of the present era lack
sweetness of melody, demonstrating only
pan-playing virtuosity, but that’s another
argument for another time.

Symposium to examine Sparrow’s career
|
Global
- The storied career of the artist who has been the most renowned name ever in the field of calypso, Mighty Sparrow, will be examined in a symposium presented by the Trinidad & Tobago Folk Arts Institute, in collaboration with the Medgar Evers College School of Professional & Community Development, on Friday evening, April 8. Titled “Just Like That, Sparrow Turned 80,” the symposium will be held in the Mary Pinkett Lecture Hall on the Medgar Evers College campus in Brooklyn, NY.
The symposium’s title hints at the unlikely reality for veteran watchers of the inimitable “Birdie,” regarded by many as calypso’s enduring evergreen, that he has indeed joined the octogenarian class as of last July. It’s not difficult to imagine that some who recall Sparrow when he was fresh out of the blocks in the 1950s -- and followed his remarkable career, through those frequent portrayals in song of himself as the embodiment of male prowess -- would probably not be adjusting readily to his becoming an 80-year-old.

There is something indescribable about the

Stereotypes keep the instrument from gaining the
respect it deserves, and I see this on gigs. Any
time someone comes up to talk to me, I always
find an opportunity in our conversation to tell
them: 1) the pan is from Trinidad (most
Americans still think it's from Jamaica)....”
In an exclusive interview with When Steel Talks

Hazel Henley of Girl
Pat Steel Orchestra -
Trinidad & Tobago
Celebration of Women
and the Steelpan Art Form
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I.
- “Hazel was always very “avant garde,” and not
only an academic but a talented musician, as
well, who had always been fascinated by the
pan....Some of us were schoolgirls and people
would ask Hazel’s mother ‘How she could allow
that in her house.’ “But,” said Pat, “she
straightened them out replying ‘it’s my house
and these children come from good families”.”
She was an intellectual, a Pan Pioneer, and
multi-talented, thoughtful, forward-thinking and
a steelband leader in an era when women were
looked down upon for any association with pan.
When Steel Talks spotlights panist, musician,
arranger and performing artist the late Hazel
Henley, founder of one of reportedly only two
all-women steel orchestras in the 1950s in
Trinidad and Tobago, “Girl Pat Steel Orchestra.”

- “As a woman in pan I’ve always felt as though
I had to prove that I could play just as well as
the men around me. Especially when I started to
move on to different sections such as the

that dominate those pans. I was very happy to
see the Female Quadro section in Redemption
Sound Setters as well as the girl
playing the “Rocket
pan” in Desperadoes....”
