“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

The Art - Just What the
Doctor Ordered:
A creative outlet
for the Arts, Pan and much more
|
Brooklyn, New York, USA -
It was real cold - well
below freezing outside in Park Slope, Brooklyn,
on what had been a Fall evening, but inside 333
Lounge the temperature was rising. The Art—an
organization that is dedicated to providing new
and upcoming artists of all ages, a way to
promote their work, their genius and their
art—was in the midst of its maiden event. And
they did not disappoint.
At the 333
Lounge, artists exhibited different styles and
genres of talent across various media (from
cupcake layouts to decorated tiles, to fashion)
- embracing and showcasing the creative process
in a way not normally seen. In addition, there
was recognition that art can exhibit itself in
many different formats and styles, techniques
and fashions - in one forum.

Ayana soars
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - On Thursday,
November 9, at just 24 years, Ayana Shallima Garcia,
the youngest in her class, Ayana graduated with
her Master of Arts in Carnival Studies Degree. Definitely
neither nerd or bookworm, Garcia is more aptly defined
as an allrounder; a Jenny of all trades. She is
also a crackshot pan musician who is also an avid
photographer, producer, writer and composer.
....Ayana’s
love affair with the steelpan is one that transcends
her relatively young age. From as early as the age
of three, she was taught the rudiments of the steelpan
by none other than her godfather, arranger and composer
Robert Greenidge. She had to stand on a box
to reach the pan but she persevered. This relationship
played a significant role in her future career plans.

Revisited on the 9th
Anniversary of his passing - Antiguan & Barbudan
Cultural and Steelpan Icon Leroy “Jughead” Gordon
|
Antigua
& Barbuda, WI -
There are few - if any - steelpan music greats that
can claim that a sitting Prime Minister spoke at
their funeral.
On November
13, 2008 Antigua and Barbuda national cultural icon
and Harmonites pan player Leroy “Jughead” Gordon
made his transition and passed on. And exactly two
weeks later on November 27, a defiantly beautiful
and sunny afternoon served as the backdrop for the
home-going service and celebration of his life.
....When Steel
Talks had been in Antigua for the annual Moods of
Pan concert. Leroy “Jughead” Gordon was one of the
great steelband leaders of our time.

EBONITES.........Who?
|
Global
- Very few knew who they
were or where they came from, but that J’Ouvert
morning they claimed their place in Carnival history.
The year was 1960 and the carnival music flavor,
Pan, was ripe from diversity and discovery as the
genius of the panist blossomed. The gladiators in
this arena were Trinidad All Stars, Invaders, Desperadoes,
Hilanders, Starlift, Guinness Cavaliers, Casablanca
and Tokyo. As far as John Public was concerned,
out of the aforementioned the champion of the J’Ouvert
Bomb contest will emerge. Among those the Pan Science
innovators resided, their egos fermenting, adorned
as they were with accolades from their respective
clans and envied by their competitors.

Narell’s Wildly Experimental
New Album Jives with his upcoming Induction into
the Percussive Hall of Fame
|
Global
- On US National Public
Radio (NPR), Andy Narell describes how pan has taken
him from the traditional steel band sound to jazz
and back again.
Narell has
a sincere and deep conviction about the music he
makes. In spite of his fame, he remains thoroughly
unpretentious, pooh-poohing the idea that his score
of albums bursts out to a paean of his pan and jazz
music of his life stories.
Life stories?
Narell claims that he’s simply doing his work, writing
complicated forms and creating larger ones, each
album, each piece of music that way and experimenting
with different others.
Narell insists
that there’s nothing about his life in the whole
kit and caboodle here.

NY Panorama: Embarrassing, Shameful,
Thoughtless, Bandits
|
New York, USA -
Well if you haven’t
heard already, New York's 2017 Panorama Steel
Orchestra competition was an epic failure for
most. Unless you were the show’s promoters - who
got away as bandits in the night - except it was
a broad daylight-mugging with everyone watching.
Calling the promoters “bandits” is really
a description 'upgrade’ as they have been known
as the original Evil Empire to the Brooklyn
Steelband community for decades.
So in this regard, let’s cut
the crap! And the fake news from those who are
spreading alternative facts, about how great New
York 2017 Panorama was. In reality it was jacked
up.

2017 Trinidad & Tobago Panorama
Review - the Good, Bad and Ugly |
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - The 2017
Trinidad and Tobago Panorama season—and by extension
the Carnival season—was a tumultuous one that was
overflowing with enough drama, intrigue, passion
and controversy to field a season of Scandal, Empire
or Game of Thrones. But in the end there was the
music. An abundance of great music created by the
finest arrangers, and outstanding performances delivered
by the best steel orchestras in the world.
Two songs
captured the imagination of Trinidad and Tobago
for this 2017 Panorama and Carnival season - “Full
Extreme” by Ultimate Rejects and “Good Morning”
by Peter Ram. In fact, “Good Morning” became sort
of the de-facto “test piece” as no other tune of
choice has endeared itself to the steel orchestras
as much in recent times. However, on closer inspection
Bunji Garlin & Machel Montano’s “Buss Head” or Crazy’s
“Gee Gee Ree” would be apropos to telling the complete
Panorama season’s story.
