“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

My Shadowmania
No Stranger, This Calypsoman Shadow
by Dalton Narine
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
We were writers on the prowl.
It was 1971 when Errol Pilgrim and I walked into
Port Services to catch the Mighty Shadow’s first songs at a public
venue.
Amid the sparseness, the stage was as dark as the
mood.
Then a small crowd started to build, and a figure
in drag, so it seemed, walked across the stage as a skeleton.
Shadow had arrived. That’s how we viewed the
histrionics.
It was such a rich moment, we embraced the hell
out of it.

SHADOW: The ‘William Blake’ of Calypso
As delivered at the Celebration of the Life
of Winston “Shadow” Bailey on October 30, 2018
by Bukka Rennie
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
William Blake a British philosopher- a poet who lived in the period 1757-1827 wrote the following words in one of his poems: “O see a world in a grain of sand/And heaven in a wild flower/Hold infinity in the palm of your hand/And eternity in an hour..." Listen now to Shadow- Winston Bailey, in his calypso "Evolution": "I am locked in a dungeon/in the middle of evolution/can't find the key/to escape destiny..."
Anyone can trace Shadow's use of these symbolic
themes in all his calypsoes and show how he expands the symbols as
he goes along to incorporate new imagery and new meaning. In short,
Shadow turns all the norms upside down and around.

Post Mortem Pan –
2018 Trinbago Executive Election
by Andre Moses
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
Sunday’s Pan Trinbago Elections presents the steelband movement with an opportunity. Beyond the hype, there were some distinct inputs into the electoral process that could potentially contribute to the building of a stronger steelband organization. I offer four such possibilities as discussion points.
Development is a medium-to-long term phenomenon. The mandate of the new Pan Trinbago Executive is to plan for both the immediate and the longer term. One imperative of such planning is to establish a succession framework for today’s leaders to pass the baton to the leaders of tomorrow.
There must always be a time and place for tradition, but there must also be space for new ideas that bring excitement and energy to the steelband’s public projection. In this regard a disturbing paradox has emerged, namely that while the critical mass of today’s pan players are young people, the age profile of steelband’s audiences is migrating steadily upward...
It was therefore very gratifying to see so many talented and well qualified young persons offering themselves for executive service and also being represented on the recently elected Central Executive. The hope is that constitutional reform will institutionalize a Pan Trinbago Youth Arm, not as a token adjunct body, but as an integral subset of the Central Executive. For its long-term survival the steelband has to continually make itself relevant to younger audiences and who best to drive that transformation than young people themselves.

Pan Jumby
Something for the Mighty Shadow
by Hazel John
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
I was ah mere child when de PAN JUMBY jumped meh! But now, when ah tink back, wha wud one expect coming out of de Land of Calypso, Steelband and Limbo. Yes, sweet Trinidad & Tobago!
I remember my early childhood years in Trinidad as if it was just yesterday. Mammy, my grandmother, would put us to bed. My sister Pat and I shared a bedroom and in no time Pat would be in dreamland and I, once again, as what seem like ah ritual with me, lay in bed in de darkness tinking, tinking, tinking...tinking ‘bout PAN till I, too, eventually drifted off to sleep.

Historic 2018 election installs first woman
president |
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
Beverley Ramsey-Moore with 117 votes created
history as the first woman to win the presidency of Pan Trinbago in
what has to be considered one of the most contentious elections in
the history of the embattled organization.
....Applause erupted as Ramsey-Moore’s victory
was officially announced, while excited and happy supporters
surrounded her at the elections venue of Mucurapo East Secondary
School in Port-of-Spain offering congratulations, hugs, and snagging
pictures with the incoming executive.
....Ramsey-Moore herself ecstatically pumped her
fist in the air, saying “....And today I am so elated! We’ve broken
the glass ceiling! Women! We have broken the glass ceiling.”

CID called in to investigate alleged fraud |
Grenada,
W.I. -Police have been approached to conduct a criminal
investigation into alleged fraud by an executive member of the
embattled Grenada Steelband Association (GSA).
A well-placed source told THE NEW TODAY
newspaper that President of the association, Jason Skeete and two
other executive members visited the Criminal Investigation
Department (CID) last Thursday to lodge the formal complaint.
He said that the complaint made is that another
executive member, Stephen Greenidge had created a different
letterhead and logo and was using it to conduct business on behalf
of the steelband association.
A letter on the new letterhead was sent to Skeete demanding that
he handed over all GSA documents in his possession as he was no
longer the President of the body.

Pan In Real Danger
Election Charade, Panorama Bankrupt
by Sharmain Baboolal
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
Keith Diaz, having busted through almost every
loophole in the Pan Trinbago constitution as he powered his way like
a raging bull, is now the biggest shadow over the hastily-convened
2018 elections for a new executive of the “world governing steel pan
body”.
Under the glare of the spotlight of the
international steel pan diaspora, the incumbents and the aspirants
have represented themselves as nothing short of an embarrassment.
....Every candidate is a delegate and every
delegate is a voter.
Of the 190 bands on the final list there are
twelve large bands who, by failing to come together as the group
with the largest stake in the steel band movement, have given up
their rights to an overgrown cadre of small and single pan bands
that everyone knows were created to ensure Keith Diaz remained in
office.
The Single Pan registration almost rivals the
combined Conventional categories.

Boogsie, Two-Left, Andy & My Dad
Let’s get with the Programme, Pan Jazz
abounds in the Caribbean
by Dalton Narine |
Florida,
U.S.A. - Hear the Phase ….
I thought my only complaint with the recent live
recording of Boogsie Sharpe’s “Only You” session at the Phase II
panyard a week or so ago was the sound of the four double guitar
pans, as if the riffs were stuck on a cooking oil drum, which, of
course, was an originator of the ensemble of drums we have today.
How wrong I was. It didn’t happen. Boogsie
acknowledged adding a bass player and two cowbells.
Boogsie utilized the hand percussion instrument
used in various styles of music including Pan and Salsa — and
infrequently in popular music.

WST Tech Notes & Tips:
Dante - Pan and Emerging Technologies
Dante Spoken Here - Why is Dante important to you?
|
New York, U.S.A. - Everywhere you turned at the 145th AES Convention in New York there seemed to be something related to “Dante” going on. It was unavoidable and simply inescapable. It is the latest buzz in audio engineering. “Dante Spoken Here” is not a joke or a passing fad. The audio industry and manufactures have embraced Dante.
But what is Dante? And why is it important to
you? Simply put Dante, and to a greater extent
AES67 (more on that later) - is a game-changer.
By way of permanently impacting the way we
think, see and do things in audio engineering,
broadcasting, recording - Dante has landed with
a large “bang” as it allows professional media
over IP networks. Furthermore it will change
your thought process on what is capable, cost
compatibility between equipment and systems, and
their relevancy going forward.

Taking Pan Trinbago
forward
Candidates reveal
plans
|
Trinidad & Tobago.
W.I. - October 14 was a historic day
in TT and a watershed day for the world
governing body for pan –Pan Trinbago.
It was the first time in the history of the
organisation’s elections that opposing
candidates came together in one forum. The
management of Shell Invaders Steel Orchestra was
able to accomplish something that nobody before
them ever did.
Invaders’ Meet the President forum held at the
President’s Box at the Queen’s Park Oval,
Tragarete Road, Woodbrook, got all candidates
vying for president of Pan Trinbago in Sunday’s
elections to come together to face the public in
a Q&A session.
The six candidates (all male) greeted each other
with smiles. Missing were the two female
candidates, Beverley Ramsey Moore and Theclia
Forde-Rodriguez.

New York, U.S.A. - Once again, as part of
Basement Recordings/WST’s ongoing quest to
continuously identify ideal microphones for
capturing the steelpan instruments in an
orchestra setting - WST spoke to Matthew McGlynn
of Roswell Pro Audio at the 145th AES convention
in New York. He is both the company founder, and
innovator behind the designs of Rowell
microphone products. As chance would have it -
(chance probably had nothing to do with it when
the Pan Gods are active) Matthew is a lover of
steelpans and fell in love with the sound of
them a long time ago. In this WST tech notes
and tips, Matthew gives a brief talk on the
benefits of, and why a Roswell microphone, is
ideally suited for that daunting task of
accurately capturing the rich tonal qualities of
the steelpan instruments.

Song for Panorama 2019
‘Get Pay’
sung by “Crazy”
|
Global
- Edwin Ayoung aka “Crazy”
is as popular as ever, and on
track for 2019 with music penned specifically
with the steelband fraternity in mind.
‘Get Pay’ is a collaboration
between Ayoung, and the Mighty Jamma out of the U.K. It
is the second track to be sent in for the
well-known annual WST Enclave of music choices,
which is usually consulted by bands and
arrangers worldwide for upcoming steelband
Panorama competitions.
If “Crazy” runs true to form,
expect to hear more releases from him in the
coming weeks for the 2019 season.

Pan Trinbago staves off
debt collectors
|
Trinidad & Tobago.
W.I. - Bailiffs moved into Pan
Trinbago headquarters in Port-of-Spain on
Thursday to levy against the steelband organisation for a growing $200,000 debt owed to
a private company.
Confirmation came from outgoing Pan
Trinbago treasurer Andrew Salvador.
Salvador said the organisation owed a
$200,000 debt to a company, which he refused
to name, that resulted in a court action.
“The court action was approved. What happened
they came yesterday (Thursday) and the matter
was ironed out.”
Salvador said Pan Trinbago eventually settled
the payment.
He admitted that Pan Trinbago owes several
companies “millions of dollars,” while six
organisations owed them $3 million.

New York Pan Pays Homage
to Ken “Professor” Philmore
|
New York, U.S.A. - Only
“Pro” could have accomplished this with nothing
but “love” in the house. It
was supposed to be and was, a celebration of the
life of one of the biggest names in pan - Ken
“Professor” Philmore. But in reality it was
simply a reflection on how “Pro” lived his life
and his impact on the living. And so on this
early Fall evening, the Tropical Paradise
Ballroom in Brooklyn, New York was packed with
over six decades of New York Pan associates,
band leaders, veteran panists and supporters.
All there to show their love, respect for and in
honor of - the late, both humble and great, Ken
“Professor” Philmore. Lots of warmth and
friendship.

Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I. - A
hit-and-run accident is what claimed the life of Ken

not run off the road as first reported.
“He was struck from behind. He told us this with his own
mouth,” Antoinette told the Newsday after the funeral held at the National
Academy for the Performing Arts, San Fernando. She said she did not know if
police were pursuing the case from this angle, but he was able to give the
statement to the cops before he passed.
“He never lost consciousness after the accident and was able
to give a statement to the police and to the doctors and tell them that he was
hit from behind,” she said as she thanked the police for their prompt response
after the accident and taking him to the hospital.

family which includes the global pan community
for the loss of one of the most down to earth
human beings one could ever meet.
Words cannot express the loss
I feel after being an integral part of Ken’s

from Hooked to Calling Meh to Vibes to Sweet 50.
Before meeting him I would always hear of this
legend called the “Professor”, who was bigger

so many times, until we met at a family event on
Boxing Day 2005....this bigger than life
character in my mind, who turned out to be so
simple, regular, and humble.

The Spirit of Joy -
Rubadiri Victor’s Tribute to Ken “Professor”
Philmore
|
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I. - Gone too
soon... That joyful, spritely whisp of energy-
full of love and craft- now no more. The passing
of Ken “Professor” Philmore is a tragedy in so
many ways. Not just because any death by
accident and of someone adjudged to be young
feels like a breach - but because he was a
Genius that never got his due. As arranger. As
player… As pioneer. And although Trinidad’s real
talent seems to be its genius in disrespecting
Heroes- something about Philmore’s passing at
this time in our history seems to loom larger as
metaphor and indictment. In him I feel we see
visible a Genius Soul who had a capacity to
command the world- but was restrained and
confined by our pettiness and capacity to
sabotage our Gifted and our Gifts...

The Saga of Ellie Man
by Dalton Narine
|
Global - I surmise that in the age of early Pan on the
Road, whenever Ellie Mannette awoke at his home
in Trinidad, his morning prayer would be
answered right on time.
That behind the distant hills
of Laventille comes the promise of the sun.
No doubt, Ellie, a hallmark
of power and leadership during Invaders’ glory
years in the 1950s and 1960s, found out what he
needed for happiness — the magic of thinking big
and believing in himself.
As a self-promoter, it must
have been quite a chore, choosing to be a
special type of person. A genius who put the
needs of others behind his.

Rowley regrets inability to play pan |
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I. -The Prime
Minister says his inability to play pan remains one of his lasting regrets.
Dr Rowley made the statement Wednesday at the launch of the
Alutech Research and Development Facility at the Tamana InTech Park,
Wallerfield.
He was responding to a musical interlude in which three
schoolgirls from a Seventh-Day Adventist School in Sangre Grande played one of
the country’s national songs on pan.
“When I was their age, I went to the Seventh-Day Adventist
Church as a boy and I was banned from those things,” he told the gathering.
“I could not go into the panyard and I could not be known to
even aspire to be a panman, because those adults of the time, who were raising
me, they knew all that had to be known, and they knew that I had to be kept away
from that, because that was the Devil’s work.”
He added: “And today one of my lasting regrets is that I
can’t play a note to save my life. And in this country of the steelband, I must
be one of the few people who owned a pan and can’t play it.”

Mike Portnoy To Play On ‘Pan Rocks’ RUSH Tribute Project |
California,
USA - Steel drum orchestra Pan Rocks will enter
the studio this fall to record its tribute to RUSH. Mike Portnoy (SONS OF
APOLLO, THE WINERY DOGS, DREAM THEATER) will handle drumming duties. The bassist
and guitarist will be announced in the coming weeks.
“I am excited to take part in this unique musical experience,
which is unlike anything I have done yet in my career,” says Mike Portnoy. “And
it is always an honor to pay tribute to one of my biggest inspirations, my hero

which featured the music of LED ZEPPELIN, KISS and JANE’S ADDICTION, all

Tracii Guns (L.A. GUNS), and Bruce Kulick (KISS, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD).
Thornton has once again called on Matt Starr (MR. BIG, ACE
FREHLEY) to produce the new project. “I’m grateful to have the opportunity to
help Tracy realize his vision for this amazing project,” says Starr. “Hearing 50
steel pan drummers play RUSH is just mind-blowing. I can’t wait for everyone
else experience it.”
The Pan Rocks orchestra is made up of steel panists from
around the world.

Duvone Stewart Remembers Ken “Professor” Philmore
I recall seeing
this small yet larger-than-life character on stage |
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - I vividly remember as a young boy coming to
Trinidad from Tobago in 1985 to attend the National School Steelband
Music Festival at the Jean Pierre Complex with the Trintoc Tobago
Youth Steelband. I recall seeing this small yet larger-than-life
character on stage with the Pleasantville Senior Comprehensive
School performing Crazy’s ‘Suck Meh Soucouyant.’ His personality was
so magnetic and infectious, that I was captivated from start to end.
Not to mention, he had immense flair and was some sort of style
extraordinaire as I recall witnessing three costume changes that
day.

Von Martin Remembers Ken “Professor” Philmore
Ken ‘Professor’ was
truly a unique kind, he lived for pan |
Washington,
D.C., USA -Within a little more than a
month the global Pan fraternity has lost another icon of the
movement. First Ellie Mannette, then now Ken “Professor” Philmore.
We are still in shock, a young man, in his prime and moving towards
his zenith. I first met Ken, “Professor” about 30 years ago as he
visited Washington DC to perform and he jokingly told me as I
prepared to interview him, he was teaching his friend and relative
Arthur Griffith the business about managing an artist.
....Ken was one of a kind. I don’t think there
will be another like him. The love he showered on this instrument
was unique. I used to say he played his instrument with
passion....He knew what he was doing and displayed joy in doing it.

Philmore dies from cardiac arrest |
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I. - ....Ken
“Professor” Philmore, who had been sedated
following major surgery on Wednesday, was put on
life support at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on
Sunday morning because he could no longer
breathe on his own. He went into cardiac arrest
yesterday morning and despite attempts by
doctors to resuscitate him, was pronounced dead
at 9.05 a.m. His wife Sophia was standing in the
lobby at the time of his death.
South West Regional Health
Authority (SWRHA) Medical Director of Health Dr
Albert Persaud said medical staff did everything
they could to save Philmore, but his injuries
were severe. Persaud said Philmore had been in
critical condition since the accident on
Republic Day with injuries to his ribs and
lungs.
“We did everything possible
and he got the best treatment that Trinidad and
Tobago could have afforded him, which was as
good as anywhere else in the world. Sometimes
people sustain injuries that put them on a very
critical list. We, of course, are taken aback by
his passing, but he was badly injured,” Persaud
said.
