Pantonic Launch
(Heavyweights Come Out To Play)

Web Posted - Monday, August 2, 2004

Pantonic Steel Orchestra officially christened it's new yard with the help of some of New York's heavy weight steel orchestras.  The yard, officially named the Pan Diamond because of the unique shape of the rehearsal area,  is easily one of the best yards in New York because of it's size and location.  Moreover, the yard allows Pantonic, the biggest steelband in North America to maneuver and practice in comfort.  Both panmen and fans alike were extremely impressed with the space.  In recent times the acquisition of an adequate practice facility has been a constant detriment to the survival of NY steelbands.

In attendance was the New York steelpan rank and file...  A virtual who's who of pan talent, notables, players, management, jumbies and critiques were on hand.  Both the camaraderie and competitive sprit were quite evident among the bands.  Each band was clearly out to make a musical statement - as was evident by their strong and varied respective repertoires.   The bands added many new musical movements to their sets.

In addition to hosts Pantonic - Marsicans, CASYM and Despers USA also performed.  This was indeed one of the better launches as it allowed pan fans to easily hear the musical differences in style and performance techniques between the different bands.  Despite the late start attributed to the rain, a great time was had by all who attended.
