Trinidad
- Keron hails from Benares Street, St James, Port of Spain. He
follows in the footsteps of many outstanding pan aficionados from
that area. Like his neighbour, mentor and role model, Len Boogsie
Sharpe, he has a natural talent for music. Keron is the resident
musical arranger for Kool and the Gang steel band based in Benares
Street and joined Playboyz steel orchestra in 1999 after leaving
Modenaires. He uses the exposure to Boogsie’s musical style to
develop his arranging skills and is proud of the fact that Pan has
always played a major role in his life. At age twelve, he played in
a quartet at the Carifesta 5 with Joe Beetle and was also selected
to attend the Republic Bank Pan Minors scholarship program at the
University of the West Indies where he achieved grade 2.
He attended
Fatima College where he studied Business Management at A levels and
started an International Business Major with a minor in Marketing at
the University of Akron. In April 2005, he performed with Mia
Gormandy who is at North Illinois University with Liam Teague
studying music. In April 2006, he performed with Robbie Greenidge at
E. J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall in Ohio. He feels this experience
has afforded him a greater confidence in performing. Keron
stated, ‘Robbie makes playing pan look so simple even though he
plays at the highest level.’
Keron has
done numerous performances on campus including Thanksgiving Dinner
and the Dean’s Luncheon. He is also doing grade 2 music as an
additional study to further his love for music. Keron is the current
musical director of Woodbrook Playboyz Single Pan Steel Band with
whom he has travelled to Taiwan, Thailand, Bangkok, Taipei, Seoul,
Mexico, Birmingham and London. In 2005, he did some musical
arranging for the Halycon Steel Band of Antigua for their Carnival
celebration. Keron is focused on his musical arranging and would
like to become one of the top arrangers in the steelband community.
He has worked with students of his alma mater, St Agnes Anglican
Primary School as well as students of the Mucurapo Girls Primary
School of St James, Trinidad.
He plays
the guitar as well as the keyboard and sees his appreciation for the
steelpan instrument as the driving force behind his successful
performing career. After completing his current study program funded
by Pan Trinbago and the University of Akron he intends to take up a
marketing director’s post at Pan Trinbago for three years. Keron’s
quiet, pensive and patient persona helps him deal with the most
trying situations to achieve his required result.
