To be wrapping up a practice session at 2:15 AM is no strange occurrence for many steel orchestras in Trinidad and Tobago during the last nights of preparation before the finals of the National Panorama.  But in the case of Desperadoes Steel Orchestra, they have been continuously fuelled by a special spirit for 2006 - that of their late master arranger Clive Bradley.   Raw emotion on the faces of many players was clearly visible as they went through their paces.

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago - Just before the hectic final week of preparation and practice for the finals of the panorama competition, When Steel Talks sat down with Michael Marcano, manager of Renegades Steel Orchestra for a brief interview to get a sense of where the band is at for the season.

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago - Topping both the preliminary and semi-final stages of the competition has both the resident arranger and the band quietly confident.  When Steel Talks asked about this, and Smooth admitted that they are all 'enjoying' the season.  He called it 'entertaining, less stressful and fun.'

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago - With a tight schedule for the 2006 Panorama season, arranger for Sforzata Steel Orchestra Yohan Popwell knows what has to be done.  The 2005 national panorama champions in the medium category are currently running third going into the finals coming off on Saturday February 25, with Popwell's arrangement of Baron's This Melody Sweet.

Starlift has been going through some lean times and "Starlift was my band at one time" says noted arranger Ray Holman on his return to the legendary Starlift.  He was asked to help turn around the fortunes of the one-time powerhouse steel orchestra.

This year famed arranger, composer and steelpan instrumentalist Ken "Professor" Philmore will be applying his craft  with a new group, Sound Specialists of Laventille.  The steelband arranger was hired by the steel orchestra to arrange their panorama tune for the  upcoming 2006 Trinidad and Tobago national steelband music panorama competition.

Desperadoes has one less decision to contend with for the 2006 Panorama season - the most important one of all:  choice o arranger to step into the post previously held by late master musician Clive Bradley.  One could say that the legendary Laventille-based steel orchestra is playing it safe, or that a band of their stature literally has their pick of fine musical talents.

Earl Brooks Sr. Takes Over The Reigns of Hatters Steel Orchestra -

Trinidad - This time around When Steel Talks pre-panorama roundup caught up with noted steelband music arranger Earl Brooks, Sr. for an exclusive interview.  Brooks, Sr. is currently the 2006 arranger for Hatters Steel Orchestra located in Southern Trinidad.  Mr. Brooks was also recovering from injuries received in a slight road accident this past Thursday.  

   

Liam Teague and Skiffle Bunch Steel Orchestra Looks For Great Accomplishments

TrinidadLiam Teague, resident arranger of Skiffle Bunch Steel Orchestra is looking forward to a promising 2006 panorama season.  Skiffle Bunch, located in Southern Trinidad, hope to again find themselves competing  for the national title in the finals for this year's panorama.  The steel orchestra placed eighth in the finals in 2005.

   

Seion Gomez  and Merrytones Looking To Defend Their Title in Panorama 2006

Trinidad & Tobago - Seion Gomez  is one of three arrangers affiliated with Northern Illinois University (NIU), participating in this year's Trinidad and Tobago steelband music panorama competition.  He also enters this year's event as the arranger of the defending small conventional steel orchestra category champions Merrytones Steel Orchestra.  Last  year, his work and the band's interpretation and performance won them the national title from a field of their peers.

   

Winston Gordon and Redemption Sound Setters Orchestra Ready For Panorama 2006

Trinidad, Tobago - Mr. Winston Gordon, arranger for Redemption Sound Setters (RSS) gave When Steel Talks the heads-up on the Tobago steel orchestra.  Redemption Sound Setters who are accustomed to securing a position in the finals, look forward to another opportunity to take the coveted title of "Panorama champion" back to Tobago.  

   

Arranger Edwin Pouchet  and  Silver Stars Looking To Regain Title in Panorama 2006

Trinidad, Tobago - Edwin Pouchet, leader and arranger of Silver Stars Steel Orchestra expressed his satisfaction in the way band performed in this past Saturday's preliminary round of judging.  This year the band performed for the judges at the Queen's Park Oval instead of their customary panyard.   Pouchet shared that in the past the judges have complained about the acoustics of their current practice area, in what amounted to the power of the orchestra overwhelming the confines of the panyard.

   
Invaders  Led by Arddin Herbert Ready for Semi Finals in Panorama 2006

Trinidad, Tobago - Arddin Herbert, arranger for Invaders Steel Orchestra was extremely satisfied with the bands preliminary round performance Wednesday night.  He was now confidently awaiting the judges results in anticipation of moving on to next round of competition.  The semi finals will be held this coming Sunday.  Fourteen bands will move on to the semifinal round and the top eight from this group will then proceed on to the final rounds of the musical competition.
