Bomb & Groovy Soca Steelband Competitions Results - Trinidad and Tobago 2013 Panorama Season

Trinidad &  Tobago, W.I. - Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra took the top honors at Pan Trinbago’s Northern Region J’Ouvert Bomb Competition.  The Pan event which has become a steelpan music staple on Carnival Monday morning was staged at Victoria Square, Port of Spain.

Trinidad All Stars won with “Close To You,” amassing 269 points. They were followed by Musical Gems playing “How Great Thou Art” which gained 261 points, then Harvard Harps scoring 258 with “Alfie.”  Invaders and Desperadoes steel orchestras tied for fourth place, each accruing 257.  Starlift Steel Orchestra and Trinidad Pan Connoisseurs filled the next two berths with 253 and 218 points respectively.

In the Single Pan Band category, Sapophonic took the lead with 247 points for their rendition of “Medley of Old Tunes.”  Opting for “It’s Now or Never” as their tune of choice, Uni Stars were in second place.  There was another tie as Belmont Hi Larks and Harlem Syncopators secured the third spot with 239 points; their tunes of choice were “Can’t Stop Loving You” and “I Look to You” respectively.

Exodus Steel Orchestra won the Non-Region category with 263 points. Next in line were Harmonites with 260 points, followed by birdsong Steel Orchestra in third position with their score of 258 while Curepe Scherzando settled in at fourth place with 254 in total.  Adjudicators were Merle Albino-De Coteau, Joslynne Sealy and Reynold Huggins.

The Northern Region also announced the results of the first ever Carnival Monday night Groovy Soca Steelband Competition, held at City Hall, Frederick Street, Port of Spain, Trinidad.  Results are as follows:

  • Desperadoes – 99 points (Conventional steel orchestra)
  • Uni Stars and Hi Larks - 98 points, and; City Sun Valley - 94 points (Single Pan Band)
  • Harmonites Steel Orchestra – 90 (Non Region).

Hugh Borde was the sole judge in the above competition.
