Chuck Gordon
Roderick “Chuck” Gordon has dropped the ‘Y’ from his name. The double National Calypso Monarch winner playfully says he’s not questioning anything anymore in his career and so had no further use for the ‘Y’ in his famous sobriquet. Gordon wrote himself into calypso history at the 2015 Dimanche Gras by becoming only the sixth calypsonian to win back-to-back titles in nearly a century.
In 2014 he became the second-youngest winner of the National Calypso Monarch competition, repeating the feat in 2015 with a political commentary entitled “The Rose” and a patriotic call for national unity in “I Believe.”
His two national titles followed a string of consistent appearances in the finals of the National Calypso Monarch (four times) and International Groovy Soca Monarch (five times) competitions.
In 2012 Chuck won his first title, the Lord Brynner Independence Calypso Monarch competition.
The Red Boyz-produced “Take Me Home” formed the title track for his 2015 European tour through six cities including: Aalborg, Copenhagen, Oslo, Amsterdam, Paris and London.
The Laventille-based artist has also consistently contributed music to his country’s national instrument, the Steelpan, with his 2008 calypso Thunder Coming being voted Pan Song of the Year after dominating the Panorama competition.
For the 2016 Panorama season, Chuck has already done admirable work on Breakthrough, the song of choice for Supernovas Steel Orchestra. It was co-written by the band’s arranger Amrit Samaroo.
Chuck has also traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean diaspora this year participating in Carnivals across North America. He was also recently nominated in the Best New Male Artist category at the International Soca Awards in New York. He will tour extensively in 2016.
The back-to-back
National Monarch Chuck Gordon believes a
hat-trick of victories in the
2016 competition is well and truly on
this Carnival. He has the opportunity to write
even more kaiso folklore and
become the third calypsonian,
after Duke and Sparrow, to
complete the three-peat. Duke
incidentally holds the record at
four titles in a row.
The
reigning monarch made his first
move towards the feat with the
release of his first 2016
calypso offering
It Eh Go Wuk
(featured here), a melodic tale of relationships,
compatibility and love for
culture that is already being
well received by calypso
audiences.
“We have done
the work and created music that
we are well pleased with. It is
on that strength that I can say
with assurance and without
apology that we’re going to be
very hard to beat on Dimanche
Gras night,” said the supremely
confident singer.
Written by Gordon and
Fazad “Uncle
Joe” Shageer with melodies by
acclaimed panist
Ray Holman and
production by star chutney music
arranger Rishi Mahatoo, the song
tells of the singer being forced
to reexamine the future of a
personal relationship with a
woman.
“I am in love and
I am still young/ So ah decide I
want to settle down/But before I
make that sacred vow/ Ah want to
know what she like and eh like
now/ She say Chuck boy ah just
want you to know/ Ah doh like
soca, chutney, pan or calypso/
Meh eyes turn red, ah went into
shock/ then ah tell mehself this
ting eh go wuk,” he sings.
“Whey Yuh Think,” and “Wedding
of the Century” aka
The Wedding (Shaadi) were
Chuck Gordon’s songs when, at age 26
in 2014 he became that
second-youngest winner in the
history of the Calypso
competition. Only Slinger
“Mighty Sparrow” Francisco, was
younger when he first won the
competition at age 21 in 1956.
Gordon said, titles aside, his
main focus remains the
development of his brand of
calypso music, which he has
called Jiggy Calypso, which is
danceable, melodic and content-based.
“Titles are
great, but for me the work is
much more than winning a crown.
I want to say things. My purpose
and vision through Jiggy Calypso
is to assist in the process of
developing a single Trinbagonian
identity,” he concluded.
