Phase II Pan Groove sets the stage by Peter Ray Blood
Had the price of admission been US$100, patrons would have
still had change for Tidco, Len “Boogsie” Sharpe and
Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove after last Friday night’s
Panyard Sensations. Attended by the largest crowd I have
ever seen at the Phase II Hamilton Street panyard, the
Woodbrook steel orchestra and its guest performers treated
patrons to a delectable serving of vintage entertainment.
Friday night’s bill included Denyse Plummer, Ann Fridal, Curtis Lewis, Learie Joseph, Angostura Woodbrook Playboyz and Phase II. Seen in the huge audience were representatives from several steel orchestras, including Exodus, Neal & Massy Trinidad All Stars, TCL Group Skiffle Bunch, Witco Desperadoes, Solo Pan Knights, bpTT Renegades and Excellent Stores Silver Stars. Speaking after the concert, Boogsie disclosed that the programme’s two segments were dedicated to cultural stalwarts who recently passed away, in Andre Tanker and Ann Marie Inniss. Playing only original music, Boogsie led Phase II in treating a captive audience to popular items like Tanker’s “Ah Went Away” and Inniss’ “Lifeline,” as well as “Thank You Mr Grover”; “Left Side, Right Side”; and, “Hugs and Kisses.” Boogsie was particularly outstanding in his solo in “Summertime,” as well as when Phase II accompanied Fridal in “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Symphony in ‘G’.” For a rapturous finale, Plummer rounded off the evening, accompanied by Phase II while rendering “Nah Leavin’,” and a medley consisting of Panorama gems like “This Feeling Nice”, “Woman is Boss” and “Pan Rising.” Preferring to mingle with patrons instead of being seated among the VIPs, the Culture and Tourism Minister was overheard commenting that it would take some doing for another steelband to equal the highly entertaining and professional production Phase II succeeded in staging. Tidco chairman, Dr Brian Harry, subsequently echoed the minister’s sentiments. “Panyard Sensations” continues this evening, promptly at 8 pm, with Angostura Woodbrook Playboyz playing host at its Tragarete Road panyard. One of the most competitive pan aggregations to emerge this last decade, Playboyz will be going all out to outdo Trinidad All Stars and Phase II in the previously-held editions of the 2003 series of panyard concerts.
Billed to perform on a programme titled “An Evening of Comedy,
Calypso & Pan” are Errol Fabien, The Amazing Mumphaet, Ewart
Serrant, Steve Sealy, D’Klan, Neal & Massy Trinidad All Stars,
Phase II and host, Playboyz. |
