New York - Jan. 20, 2003
With full support from their male counterparts and in an unprecedented spirit of business cooperation, sisterhood, and “pan fraternity,” the New York Pan world came together to feature their women, fully cognizant of their marketing and advertising value in today’s business and entertainment scene. It is also in step with being ready for the upcoming month of March 2003 designated as Women’s Month.
These Women of Steel bring the Steelpan to new heights with their unabashed showcase of pan artistry on the North American pan scene. Proficient women with proven business aptitude, up and coming young professionals with keen business resolve, and students making their educational mark were part and parcel of the January 19, 2003 promotional Photo shoot in New York’s SOHO area.
Talent, intelligence and beauty came to the fore. The highlighting of these women in their own right is a bold move which spotlights the massive feminine power in what has been traditionally a male-dominated pan world not so long ago. These women represent the much broader spectrum of the female steelband community which comprises girls as young as five years to women who are mature family matriarchs in age, experience and power.
Pan women from eleven of some of New York’s top steel orchestras - including NY Nutones, Dem Stars, Pantonic, Metro, ADLIB, Sonatas, CASYM, Utopia Pan Soul: the Next Generation, D’Radoes, Pan Ambassadors, Despers USA and Sesame Flyers - were part of the photo session. The women representatives of three other well-known NY bands - Caribbean Youth Panoramics (CYP), Pan Rebels and Moods Pan Grove were unable to participate because of unforeseen complications; nonetheless management personnel expressed their support and regret at not being able to be there at that moment.
Indeed all the bands’ male management acknowledged the importance for maturity across the board by recognizing women’s participation in the NY pan world. This support ensures the viability of steelband in the future - and was cemented by respective management’s public encouragement and attendance of the women’s photo session.
More will definitely be seen, and continue to be heard- from these Women of Steel, especially in the Women’s Month - March 2003, and beyond.
