WST - “Tell us about Indira Amaya Lizárraga?”
Indira L. - “My full name is Indira Yajaira Amaya Lizárraga. I was born in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico in 1990. I have two brothers, one twin sister Indra, and my little brother José. They also are an artists in some ways, we inherited the artist part from my mother, Isaura Lizárraga, because she is a painter and sculptor. I studied 2 years of Fashion design, but I didn’t finish my career because I liked more musician's career, specializing in percussions. That’s the reason I decided to move to Xalapa. Here, I study orchestral percussion and playing with the Steel Band de Xalapa.”
“Mi nombre completo es Indira Yajaira Amaya Lizárraga, nací en Culiacán, Sinaloa, México. Actualmente curso el segundo año de licenciatura especialidad Percusiones. Vengo de una familia de artistas puesto que mi mamá se dedica a la pintura y escultura, así que ello hizo que mis hermanos y yo optáramos por carreras ligadas al arte. Estudié dos años de la carrera Diseño Modas, pero no terminé debido a que mis intereses cambiaron y decidí dedicarme a la música al 100% Por esta razón decidí mudarme a Xalapa, Veracruz y estudiar la carrera en Percusiones bajo la tutela del maestro Eduardo Téllez.”
WST - “When and how did you first become aware of the steelpan instrument?”
Indira L. “It was the last year (March 2015) my teacher from school percussion Lalo Téllez, invited me to play the guitar pan in his band. Now, I’m learning doubles seconds and tenor pan, just for fun and pleasure.”
“Recuerdo que fue el año pasado, justamente por el mes de marzo. La verdad estaba pasando por un momento muy difícil y es ahí cuando mi maestro me invita a formar parte de la Steel Band de Xalapa, desepeñándome en la Guitar pan. Ahora, estoy aprendiendo a tocar el doble segundo y tenor pan por gusto y placer.”

WST - “What keeps your passion for the steelpan instrument and music going?”
Indira L. - “Pan just makes me happy, really, if I had a bad day I just have to play or hear pan and get relaxed.”
“Simplemente amo lo que hago y me encanta el sonido del steel pan, hace sentirme relajada y aunque en algún momento haya tenido un mal día, toco steel pan y mi día termina siendo feliz.”
WST - “What does your family think about your involvement in Pan?”
Indira L. - “They didn't know the instrument until my sister Indra made us a video clip of the band [Steel Band de Xalapa]. And of course, they loved it, now my brother doesn't stop hearing [listening to] steel pan music.”
“Ellos no conocían el Steel drum hasta que mi hermana hizo unos videos para la banda, desde ese momento mi familia no para de compartirlos y mi hermano se ha vuelto un fan de la música para steel pan.”
WST - “What is the greatest challenge facing this current generation of steelpan musicians in Mexico?”
Indira L. - “Well, as you know, we are the first steel band here in Mexico, so there’s not too much people playing steel drum in our country, but I trust in our work and I can tell, that [the] future of the steel drum in Mexico will be huge in a few years, because is the nature of music. Our challenge will be [to] get accepted as real players, and that people know the steel pan as they know the guitar or piano; and why not, create schools of steel pan in all Mexico!”
“Un gran reto sería que la gente conozca el steel drum así como conoce una guitarra o un piano. Otro reto más grande sería crear escuelas de steel pan en México, lo cual creo que con perseverancia se puede lograr, ya que el instrumento habla y agrada por sí sólo a muchísimas personas.”
WST - “Describe your most memorable steelpan musical experience?”
Indira L. - “I think it’s every time I played, because [it] is really awesome how people dance, sing at the end of concert; they come to ask about the instruments, the name of the songs, etc. see that, it means that “You did right [good]”.”
“Experiencias han sido pocas ya que tengo poco tiempo tocando steel pan, pero en lo que a mí concierne, cada concierto es especial porque tú ves a la gente y se nota que le gusta lo que haces...ellos bailan, cantan y al final del concierto se acercan para preguntarte por el nombre de la banda, de las canciones y del instrumento y esto significa que lo hiciste bien, ya que tu mensaje fue recibido por el espectador.”
WST - “What do you like most about Pan?”
Indira L. - “The sound definitely catches you. It's amazing how it changes your moods with just a few notes, plus I really like the way it feels, which is totally different from any other percussion instrument.”
“Definivamente su sonoridad atrapa. Es increíble como cambia el estado de ánimo con tan sólo escuchar un par de compases, además me gusta mucho la forma en la se ejecuta, la cual es totalmente distinta a cualquier otro instrumento de percusión.”
WST - “When you are performing, after the event, do other females approach you regarding your playing Pan?”
Indira L. - “Yes! It's funny seeing faces when they ask questions, I tell the name of my instrument, Guitar pan, because they imagine a 'regular' guitar haha.”
“Sí!!! Y me encanta que se acerquen a preguntar porque significa que les gustó la banda, aunque en lo personal me da mucha risa ver su reacción cuando me preguntan por el nombre del instrumento que toco (Guitar pan) ya que ellos rápidamente relacionan el nombre con una guitarra clásica.”
WST - “Tell us overall about being female and playing pan in Mexico?”
Indira L. - “Oh I just love it, is really interesting for me doing this, because, I never imagined playing steel pan, much less in Mexico. I watched on TV steel drummers, and obviously thought “Wow, how beautiful [it] would be to play that instrument some day!” And now I’m here, it's great to be part of this original project, though it's weird to be the only woman inside Steel Band de Xalapa. But I hope, more women will be encouraged to join our project.”
“Sinceramente nunca llegué a pensar que en algún momento de mi vida tocaría steel pan y mucho menos en México, creo que esta oportunidad llegó en su debido momento y en lo que a mí concierne, sólo me queda agregar que es una grata experiencia formar parte de un proyecto original y enriquecedor, aunque, es un poco raro ser la única chica dentro del grupo, espero que con el tiempo más mujeres se animen a formar parte del proyecto.”

WST - “You play other instruments; in your opinion how do they compare with the steelpan?”
Indira L. - “Well, I played marimba and orchestra percussion, (leader of the percussion section in the OSJEV (Youth Orchestra of the State of Veracruz) and definitely, playing steel pan is is nothing like playing other percussion instruments, because they have nothing in common; except only the name of notes, because the arrangement of scales, chords, everything else, is played in a different way, and that makes steel pan really more interesting. Movements you make playing this instrument reminds me of practicing tai-chi, as the relaxing of the body is different than when playing other percussion instruments.”
“Toco marimba y percusión orquestal, actualmente me desempeño como principal de la sección de percusiones en la OSJEV (Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil del Estado de Veracruz) y sí, el practicar marimba y percusión orquestal, tiene nada que ver con practicar steel pan, creo que sólo coinciden en el nombre y afinación de las notas, porque la disposición de escalas, acordes, arpegios, es totalmente distinta y eso lo de las características que me llama la atención del steel pan, porque el movimiento que realizas al ejecutar una obra o pieza para este instrumento, me recuerda a la práctica del tai chi, ya que el estado de relajación del cuerpo es distinto que al tocar cualquier otro instrumento de percusión.”
WST - “What do you like about Steel Band de Xalapa?”
Indira L. - “I like the atmosphere, the guys are very nice, I think everyone loves playing pan, and I like the commitment and the love they have for music. I learn a lot from them and our director.”
“Me gusta el ambiente, la verdad los chavos son muy lindos y creo que a todos por igual nos encanta tocar steel pan..me gusta el compromiso y el amor que tienen por la música. Aprendo mucho de ellos y de nuestro director.”
WST - “Who is your favorite arranger?”
Indira L. - “Len “Boogsie” Sharpe.”

WST - “What type of music do you listen to when you're not involved with Pan?”
Indira L. - “I like listening very much to Latin Jazz, Rock, Jazz, Brazilian Music, Classical music, funk, ska, symphonic music, reggae, R&B.”
“Me gusta mucho escuchar Jazz, Latin Jazz, R&B, Pop, Rock, Música clásica y sinfónica, reggae, ska jamaiquino, rocksteady, tangos, etc.”
WST - “What is your vision for the steelpan instrument?”
Indira L. - “I think it is the instrument with a great future, the sound just surrounds you, and people are dedicated to this instrument which plays well in different musical genres.”
“Creo que es un instrumento con mucho futuro en cualquier lugar, ya que su sonoridad te envuelve y además, existe poca gente dedicada a este instrumento, del cual puede sacarse mucho provecho en diferentes géneros musicales”

WST - “Where do you see yourself in five years, musically?”
Indira L. - “Doing my masters, I'm not sure if in steel pan, but what I do know is that I see myself playing steel pan, any where - working in beach playing, haha.”
“Haciendo una maestría, aún no estoy segura si en steel pan, pero lo que sí sé, es que sí me veo tocando el steel drum en cualquier otro lugar.”
WST - “Are there any other steelband-related matters you would like to bring forward?”
