A unique find in a North American
Moravian church, Steel Praisin' is a steel drum music ministry consisting
of members of Friedberg Moravian Church. Their main focus is sharing
testimonies of Jesus Christ through "Witness Shows", performed throughout
the year at different locations all over the Triad region.
The Moravian church is based on world
missions,
especially
in the Caribbean island chain, where the prospective program was
introduced approximately seven years ago. Being a new concept (for
many of the church members had never "seen such a thing before", some of
the older members of the church were a little reluctant when the program
first started.
Acceptance of the
steelband in their
church community has not been automatic, but the biggest critic in the
church stated after the group performed for a recent worship service, that
Steel Praisin's performance was one of the most beautiful things he had
ever heard. They had played "Canon in D".
Steel Praisin' performs mostly away
from their own congregation, for other churches, civic groups, nursing
homes, and retirement communities, and are
always enthusiastically received everywhere they perform, and by all ages.
They are not the typical "island" steel band, but play a wide variety of
music, from calypso to Elvis, Country to Pop music. Their first CD
was released about two years ago entitled "A New Song."
Directly after, within the first nine to twelve months' performances,
Steel Praisin' sold their first 1,000 copies in total, via
post-performance sales. Through the sale of the CD, they have since
been able to replace their old pans with new MAPPO pans on upper
[frontline] pans, and Coyle pans for Guitar and Bass. Their original
pans were made by Mikey Enoch.
With Tom Petersen as their
Music
Director, Steel Praisin' continue their musical testimony through much of
the year, performing approximately fifty times each year, within a
forty-two week period.
