ADLIB Steel Orchestra - ‘What’s Going On’

André White - arranger

Brooklyn, New York, USA - ADLIB Steel Orchestra performs the classic “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye, arranged by André White.

“Although the song was written and released over forty-seven years ago on January 20, 1971, at the height of the Vietnam war - it is perhaps as relevant today as it was back then, in light of current events worldwide.  The song could easily be a referendum on the tortuous demise of George Floyd, who has become a global symbol for police brutality and troubling race relations.

Back then, the song spoke directly to the War, violence and police brutality.  ‘What’s Going On’ is considered by many to be one of the greatest protest songs ever.  An interesting side note is that Motown founder and owner Berry Gordy hated the song and tried to bury it.  In spite of Gordy’s efforts the song was released and became one of the company’s biggest hits.
