Rhythm Café Steel Drums: A Community
Celebration
will be
taking place on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at the
Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum from
11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
The
feature presenter,
Dr. Kim Johnson, is a leading researcher on steel band history, that will
offer an illustrated discussion on origins and the early development of pan, the
orchestration of pan, and the instrument’s place in the community. A musical
demonstration by recording artist Lennard Jack will accompany the talk.
This is a collaboration
between the museum and Caribbeana Communications
Incorporated (CCI), a 501 (c)(3) media broadcasting
company developed from the 34 year old
Washington, DC based radio program called
Caribbeana on WPFW 89.3 fm (www.wpfw.org). The partnership will bring education,
entertainment, and enlightenment about a
globally impacting part of the Caribbean culture
to Washington, DC while bridging cultural gaps
and stimulating community involvement.
“Caribbean culture
is often marginalized on many societal, economical, and cultural fronts, while
the people of its Diaspora contribute economically to various global societies”,
stated Caribbeana’s Von Martin, CEO and Founder.
He also expressed, “CCI is extremely proud and excited to partner with
the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum on this event. It encompasses CCI’s
Triple E Movement: Reflecting and Promoting All That Is Caribbean”.
Caribbeana Communications Incorporated may be a
newly formalized company, but its founder and
Chief Executive Officer,
Vonulrick “Von” Martin, is a 34 year media
veteran in Washington, DC and internationally.
His broadcasting passion and cultural prowess
has tempted him out of retirement from the
Organization of American States (OAS) to create
a quality media based organization that promotes
and reflects all that is Caribbean through
radio, television, & internet. He has teamed
up with a former collaborator, Smithsonian,
through its Anacostia Community Museum to offer
the Washington, DC Metropolitan community
Rhythm Café’
Steel Drums.
The event starts promptly at 11 AM at the
Anacostia Community Museum,
1901 Fort Place, SE, Washington, DC 20020-3298.
Other partners involved with this event include
the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Embassy in
Washington, DC that will host another night of
Rhythm Café Steel Drums
on Monday, November 16th. Contact

perspectives, generate new knowledge, and deepen
understanding about the ever-changing concepts
and realities of ‘community’
while maintaining its strong ties to Anacostia
