Rhythm Café Steel Drums: A Community Celebration

Rhythm Café Steel Drums: A Community Celebration will be taking place on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

image002The feature presenter, Dr. Kim Johnson, is a leading researcher on steel band history, that will offer an illustrated discussion on origins and the early development of pan, the orchestration of pan, and the instrument’s place in the community. A musical demonstration by recording artist Lennard Jack will accompany the talk.

This is a collaboration between the museum and Caribbeana Communications Incorporated (CCI), a 501 (c)(3) media broadcasting company developed from the 34 year old Washington, DC based radio program called Caribbeana on WPFW 89.3 fm (www.wpfw.org).  The partnership will bring education, entertainment, and enlightenment about a globally impacting part of the Caribbean culture to Washington, DC while bridging cultural gaps and stimulating community involvement.  “Caribbean culture is often marginalized on many societal, economical, and cultural fronts, while the people of its Diaspora contribute economically to various global societies”, stated Caribbeana’s Von Martin, CEO and Founder.   He also expressed, “CCI is extremely proud and excited to partner with the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum on this event. It encompasses CCI’s Triple E Movement: Reflecting and Promoting All That Is Caribbean”.

Caribbeana Communications Incorporated may be a newly formalized company, but its founder and Chief Executive Officer, Vonulrick “Von” Martin, is a 34 year media veteran in Washington, DC and internationally.  His broadcasting passion and cultural prowess has tempted him out of retirement from the Organization of American States (OAS) to create a quality media based organization that promotes and reflects all that is Caribbean through radio, television, & internet.   He has teamed up with a former collaborator, Smithsonian, through its Anacostia Community Museum to offer the Washington, DC Metropolitan community Rhythm Café’ Steel Drums.  The event starts promptly at 11 AM at the Anacostia Community Museum, 1901 Fort Place, SE, Washington, DC 20020-3298.

Other partners involved with this event include the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Embassy in Washington, DC that will host another night of Rhythm Café Steel Drums  on Monday, November 16th. Contact Von Martin for further details about this specific date.
