Thirty contestants have been given the nod to
move on to the Preliminaries which take place on
Saturday 24th October at 7:00 pm at
the Pan Palais - including panists Opal Murrel,
Tyeesha Alexander and Ato Cobham, who each wish
to continue in the footsteps of other Talent
Expression-winning panists: Keisha Codrington,
Junior “Wiggy” Hinds and Richard Bereaux.
There is the usual mix of Talent Expression
veterans and fresh exciting talent who have not
yet participated in this event showcasing
dancers, monologists, vocalists and
instrumentalists. Those who were at the
auditions are raving about newcomers like
15-year old Emmanuel Guerra from San Juan who
has a mature, powerful voice that angels would
die for.
There is also a lot of excitement being
generated by 10-year old Ferdinand Smith out of
the Impulse camp, who, while a newcomer to
Talent Expression, is a rising soca star with a
growing fan base. Another participant drawing
attention is vocalist Kafi Smith, a second
generation member of the well-known Robinson
clan from the Siparia/Palo Seco/Santa Flora area
in south Trinidad.
But it is early days yet. Out of those
performing at the preliminaries, twenty will go
forward to the Semi Finals which take place on
Saturday 7th November and only twelve will perform at
the Grand Final on November 21st.
There are over TT $36,000 in prizes at stake, with
the winner of the Grand Final taking home TT $5,000
and all finalists qualifying for money prizes.
In addition to talented panists, other winners
of Southern Marines Steelband Foundation’s
Talent Expression over the years include La
Donna Rouse and Sammantha Flores (dancers) Mark
Eastman and Megan Walrond (calypsonians), and
Lucy Regis (monologist).
