Global
- As part of our
ongoing effort to provide the
global steelpan music community
access to great music with stellar
performances, When Steel Talks
is pleased to announce that
we will be carrying the
free online
live stream of the
upcoming NIU (Northern
Illinois University)
concert on the
WST steelband music network.
The NIU Steelband will perform
a combined concert with the
NIU Jazz Ensemble.
The concert will feature arranger,
composer and performing artist
Sune Borregaard’s
arrangements and compositions
for steelband and jazz ensemble.
Borregaard’s arrangements will
include Miles Davis’ Nardis
and Dizzy Gillespie’s Manteca
in addition to two original
compositions, April
and Blue Pan, both
written specially for this unique
collaboration.
The NIU Steelband is directed
by Liam Teague
(Head of Steelpan Studies/Assistant
Professor of Music) and
Clifford Alexis
(composer, arranger, tuner
and builder). NIU
is one of the few institutions
in the world at which students
may pursue music degrees
(Bachelors and Masters)
with the steelpan as their
major instrument of choice.
Professor Ronald Carter
(director, NIU Jazz Studies),
leads the NIU Jazz Ensemble.
