Petra
Abraham with Southern Marines
Steel Orchestra
Trinidad &
Tobago. W.I. -
Southern Marines
Steelband Foundation in Marabella,
Trinidad - of which slain panist,
twenty-year old Petra Abraham was
a member - has declared that
in homage, this weekend’s upcoming
finals (on Saturday November 20)
of their annual Talent Expression
competition, will be dedicated to
her.
Petra
Abraham was cut down in the
prime of her life, by bandits who
shot her in the back as she tried
to flee during an attempted robbery
at Ming’s Restaurant & Bar on Leotaud
Street, San Fernando in south Trinidad,
two nights ago on November 16.
In addition to being a steelpan
musician with Southern Marines,
Petra was studying for a Bachelor’s
degree in Education at the University
of Trinidad and Tobago. She
was also a vocalist, monologist
and played netball.
Despite the “pall
of gloom” that has been cast over
the music organization by the panist’s
untimely death, the group’s Executive
Committee decided to celebrate Petra’s
life, by putting on the “best show
ever” for Southern Marines Steelband
Foundation’s Talent Expression competition,
now in its tenth year. Ironically,
Petra had co-hosted the semi-finals
phase of Talent Expression less
than two weeks ago on November 6.
Finally – this
coming Saturday, Petra Abraham’s
loved ones, her friends, and her
Southern Marines steelpan family
will all say goodbye for the final
time, to the young woman who had
so much to live for. It is
also the same day of the Talent
Expression finals, which will be
held later that evening. Undoubtedly
there will be several teary-eyed
members in the audience when the
dedication to Panist Petra is made.
