Breaking Steelpan Music News

Pan Trinbago will be staging two (2) major steelband competitions in September during Carifesta 2006.

They are the 4th Biennial World Steelband Music Festival Minor Categories and Republic Pan Fiesta.

Both events are tributes to steelpan excellence attracting some of the country’s top Conventional and Single Pan steelbands and in the case of the WSMF, pannists from around the world.

As in the past, the WSMF is divided into Minor and Orchestra categories. The former comprises Soloists, Duets, Quartets and Ensembles and is open to participants in the Caribbean, Europe and North America.

Continuing the format in which songs composed by calypsonians were chosen, producer Pan Trinbago has selected music selections by The Mighty Sparrow, Dr. Slinger Francisco as test pieces for the WSMF 2006/2007.

While the Finals of the WSMF Minor categories will be held in September, the qualifying round for local (Trinidad & Tobago) orchestras will begin “after Carnival 2K7” with the World Finals (Orchestra) scheduled for June next year in Miami, Florida.

For the 2006 edition of Republic Pan Fiesta, participants are required to play a calypso composed and performed by a CARICOM national and will be conducted at two levels – regional and national. Republic Pan Fiesta Finals is carded for 25th September 2006.

Registration forms and Rules for both competitions will be available soon from Pan Trinbago offices.
