Michael Marcano, manager of the legendary Renegades Steel Orchestra recently took time out of his busy schedule to chat with When Steel Talks. It was a post-preliminary conversation, and Marca no thought that the band "put down a very good performance" in the pan yard event, especially from the reaction and the comments heard from members of the crowd. For the preliminary round, they had opted to go with one hundred players, he said, because the other musicians were in the process of perfecting their respective parts. He noted that a number of practice nights had been lost prior to the preliminary because of inclement weather and that ground was being made up. He paid homage to Renegades arranger Jit Samaroo, and lauded the "magic" the latter worked in his arrangement. Marcano said that for him, personally, the option for bands to choose material from prior years was "unnecessary," though it was "neither here nor there" for Renegades. The steel orchestra opted to go with De Fosto's "From Beyond" - released for the 2005 pan season. For Marcano, a short pan season such as this year's, makes for an exciting one. He is looking forward to hearing the offerings of the other steel orchestras, "even those who have chosen to play past selections." The Renegades' manager expects to enjoy the variety of music for Panorama, but notes that if "going back" becomes the norm, then there is "a risk of the creativity of new music being stifled." The steel orchestra's stage side - the smaller contingent of the band that plays during the year - began practicing their panorama music in 2004, before the Christmas season. When 2005 rolled around, there was a core of players who already had the initial arrangement down. Renegades is known for performing the musical works of the late Lord Kitchener at past Panorama competitions, and Marcano said the band was happy for the opportunity to play "From Beyond" which is a tribute to the music of the Grand Master. So as the January 23 semi-finals loom closer, the next step for Renegades is to fortify the formidable groundwork the band has already laid down, with arranger Jit Samaroo continuing to tweak the overall product with his "magic."
