Finals Results for Medium Conventional Steel Orchestras - Trinidad & Tobago National Panorama 2019 - Sixth Consecutive Title for the Pan Elders/Duvone Stewart Collaboration!
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Ultimately it was [again] the year of the combination of Pan Elders Steel Orchestra and champion arranger Duvone Stewart, keeping firm hold of their 2018 success, and now making it their sixth consecutive title in the medium band category. This unbeatable collaboration had it ‘in the bag’ from the first stage of competition, as Pan Elders led the pack after the preliminaries and semi-finals this Panorama season, before ‘formalizing’ their win on finals night. And this was Stewart’s second triumph as arranger at this specific juncture of Panorama 2019, having taken the Trinidad & Tobago Defence Force Steel Orchestra to the pinnacle in the small conventional category just two nights earlier on February 28.
But there were nine medium co-competitors who made it clear that having come this far, they were not going to go down without a good brawl, musically-speaking. And so it was that just before 7:30 p.m. last evening, Saturday March 2, that the first of only two bands from the sister isle - Katzenjammers Steel Orchestra (led by Pan Trinbago president Beverley Ramsey-Moore) - sounded the first notes in the finals of the annual Panorama. The musicians were dressed in all black complete with hats, in homage to the singer and composer of their tune of choice (Stranger), the Mighty Shadow, the late Dr. Winston Bailey - who passed away on October 23, 2018. In fact Bailey was one of the three cultural icons who passed in recent times, and who the 2019 National Panorama was officially dedicated to; the others were Ken “Professor” Philmore and Winston Scarborough (D’Original DeFosto Himself). And the musical recognition of Dr. Bailey was clear in that the first three medium finalists opted for his classics as tunes of choice; Curepe Scherzando followed in position two with Yuh Lookin’ For Horn while band number three Valley Harps went with the much-loved music anthem of Dingolay.
Katzenjammers ably represented Tobago, eventually placing second when results were announced. Couva Joylanders who were dressed in fiery red outfits trimmed in gold with complementary yellow gold head bands (in keeping with the theme of their tune, ‘Fire in the Area’) - ensured they singularly recognized Bailey, Scarborough and Philmore with a banner showcasing the three icons. The band performed in position eight, and their musical presentation locked in their third place spot by the end of the night.
And interestingly enough with reference to playing position, the ‘luck of the draw’ had literally been with Richard Forteau’s Sound Specialists of Laventille and its arranger Seion Gomez in both the semi-finals and finals, as each time they drew that fairly coveted ‘last’ and impactful spot to perform before the judges - position fourteen in the semis, and tenth for final night. And when they closed off their leg of competition by 10:38 p.m. local time, Sound Specialists’ overall work presenting the Mighty Duke’s The Phung-Uh-Nung Sweet (while sporting red Chinese-style inspired tops trimmed in bright yellow) brought them into a tie for fourth place with Pamberi Steel Orchestra, who worked with arranger André White.
Judges tasked with taking in and evaluating the performances of the final ten medium steel orchestras were: Ezra Joseph, Lambert Phillip, Laurel Broomes-Rogers, Lorna Conyette, Martin Albino and Richard Pierre.
