Panorama 2020 Results - Medium Steel Orchestra Semi-finals
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - What began as a sunny and windy afternoon, greeted pan players and attendees alike when the Panorama 2020 Semi-finals aka “Savannah Party” got started shortly after 1:00 p.m. local time, with Trinidad Valley Harps first up. A set of sixteen steel orchestras in the medium category faced judges at the venue of the Queen's Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain. By 3:47 p.m. Couva Joylanders in position nine led off the second half. The sixteenth and final band in competition, Curepe Scherzando, took the stage at 6:10 p.m.
Curepe Scherzando delivering Yohan Popwell’s arrangement of My House is leading going into the finals, while there is a three-way tie in second place among Couva Joylanders, Katzenjammers and Siparia Deltones. After six consecutive championships in the category, 2019 defending champion Pan Elders Steel Orchestra has been knocked out of contention for the chance of a seventh title, landing just outside the top ten. The band had gone with a new arranger, Kendall Williams, playing his arrangement of Donkey. Previous Pan Elders championships were with Duvone Stewart as arranger.
The top ten bands are making their final musical pitch for the 2020 championship this coming Sunday, February 16. And for the first time, the medium finals competition will be held in Trinidad’s sister isle of Tobago, where the excitement has been building in anticipation of this historic event.
