The Cavaliers Steelband was founded in San Fernando on February 25, 1961, when 18 players led by Lennox "Bobby" Mohamed (Mohammed) left the Gondoliers Steelband. With Mohammed as leader and arranger, the band gained the sponsorship of the Guinness Company and went on to win the Panorama competition twice. Following its success, the band travelled to Margarita, Venezuela, in 1968 to perform in the island's Carnival celebration.
