A conservative estimate of over 400 million dollars (US) is contributed annually to the economy of New York City - over the three-day weekend by the West Indian Labor Day Carnival festivities ... And the New York steelband community has always and continues to play an obviously irreplaceable role in these festivities. The New York Panorama and J'Ouvert celebrations are world renowned musical and cultural events. However, the coordinating body of the J'Ouvert celebrations will receive zero funding from the city this year. Furthermore, the New York Panorama first prize has yet to come close to $100,000 (US)... Ooopps! The most offered for the championship has been $12,000 to date... New York Steelbands routinely spend between $50,000 and $100,000 of their own money each year to participate in the annual panorama, for a top prize of only $12,000? And the rest is "prestige?" What's wrong with this picture??
